Sebastian’s POV
“I’ll see you in two hours, my mate” I mumbled, wishing more than anything I never had to breathe another second away from her again.
Despite the fact that my control was slipping, I still had Alpha duties to attend to. I take one last deep inhale of her intoxicating scent, and I tear myself away from her to walk down the stairs to my office.
My skin feels like it’s on fire as I listen to her rapid heartbeat grow more and more faint. The more the distance grows between us, the more it feels like I can breathe, while simultaneously feeling like a vice is constricting around my heart. Alaric paces uneasily in my head, wanting more than anything to go back to his mate.
I trot down the stairs and through the pack house to my office where I know Jay and Vic are waiting for me.
I walk in through the doors and find them tensely standing over a giant map outlining pack territories. They’re pointing and shaking their heads, and so I know whatever it is can’t be good.
“Alright, what’s the report?” I asked, settling into the large chair at the head of the table.
Vic takes a deep inhale and begins speaking.
“So you know we’ve been keeping an eye on the vampire activity on our eastern border, and reports have been coming in more and more frequently that the rogue vampire leader is amassing forces. Their clan is growing larger and larger, and it won’t take long for the humans to notice these disappearances, murders, animal attacks and robberies are all related. Dimitri has reached out to us asking for assistance given our long-standing alliance. It only came in this morning, or else this would have been perfect to discuss with the other Alphas at the meeting” Vic reported, Jay nodding his head behind him.
Dimitri Vasile was the leader of the vampire clans in the Eastern part of the country, many bordering our pack territory. Vampire clans and witches covens operated very similarly to werewolf packs, and just like werewolves they had good and bad, organized communities and rogues. Dimitri’s clans were a close ally to our pack and many others, maintaining a strong relationship between species for generations.
“What exactly does Dimitri want?” I asked, leaning my chin on my clasped fingers, eyeing the red x-es where the attacks were concentrated. They were scattered about, but the most recent were very close to our border with Blood Moon.
“He wants to hold a meeting, and he wants us to coordinate with him and the other packs to look into this. Prepare for a war if need be. This rogue clan is stirring up trouble and we need to get to the bottom of it.” Victor said.
“Another meeting, sounds like a blast” Jay snorted, rolling his eyes.
“I agree. One meeting to the next it seems” I said, shaking my head.
“Dimitri is willing to host the meeting, but wonders if we would be willing to host instead. He recognizes not all the packs would be comfortable meeting in the heart of a vampire clan, and wants to ensure this go as smooth as possible” Victor said, reading from the report he had compiled.
“I think that is the wisest decision” Jay jumped in “considering how some packs feel about vampires, it would show our faith in Dimitri and help ease any tensions”
While our pack held a long-standing and positive relationship with Dimitri and other clans, there were definitely others that held old prejudices and suspicions.
“We can hold it here, to further emphasize that we trust Dimitri. He’s already been invited in, but other packs seeing that will mean something. And show that we take this threat seriously as a threat to not just the vamps, but to us as well.” Victor added.
I nodded my head in agreement with their suggestions.
“Who would we invite? Did Dimitri have an idea?” I asked, looking at the map.
“He thinks the packs he shares borders with are crucial, so naturally that would be us, Lunar Moon, Harvest Moon, Blood Moon, and…” Victor trailed off, raising his eyebrows and shaking his head.
“And Shadow Moon? Has he lost his 800 year old mind?” I raked my hands through my hair.
“Shadow Moon does border the northern part of his territory, and from the way it sounds that area has been hit pretty hard” Victor stated simply.
“Yeah, but who’s to say it’s not Shadow Moon doing that themselves?” Jay retorted. I had to agree he had a point.
“And Dimitri expects us to host Shadow Moon?” I asked incredulously.
“He said and I quote ‘If anyone can get those bloody mutts to the table, it’s the big bad wolf Sebastian’” Victor said with a smirk.
“I appreciate his faith in me” I said with a snort, “so I guess we’ll have to coordinate this meeting. Victor, since you have been in contact with Dimitri, you will set things up for him and his clan leaders. We’ll have to alert the hospital to build a stock supply of blood bags. Jay, I’m putting you in charge of planning everything here in the pack, while I will work on inviting the Lunar, Harvest, Blood, and Shadow Alphas”
“Boss, you do realize you have the Blood Moon heir under your roof right now, right? You can extend that invitation personally” Jay said with a cocky smirk and a wink.
“She’s not their Alpha yet, and something this big requires an Alpha. Plus I’m not ignorant to the fact not every Alpha is going to accept her word as Blood Moon’s law. This is too big to bring a petty squabble into the mix” I said.
“Then why are we letting Shadow Moon pack in?” Jay snorted with an eye roll.
“Let’s just hope that son of a b***h Finley will show up and not cause trouble” I said, teeth clenching.
Alpha Finley Rose of Shadow Moon was a cruel Alpha. True to Shadow Moon’s reputation, he abused the she-wolves he bedded and tortured young pups in the name of strengthening his pack. His pack was known for cruelty, abuse, and absolute poverty. He did nothing to help his pack members but only cared for his own desires. Always flirting with the edge, he never crossed the line that would force the Alpha council to intervene. He was clever, and kept his hands clean with his dirty dealings. The Alpha Council could never pin a crime to Shadow Moon, there was never enough evidence. Word was that they had witches on their side, and not the good kind of witches either.
It made my stomach turn to invite Finley into my home, around my people, but if Dimitri was this concerned I knew the threat the rogue vampires posed was far greater. He knew the obstacles that would be against other packs coming to his aid, and he was willing to deal with them anyway.
“Is there anything else we need to discuss?” I asked, looking to Vic and Jay.
They both exchanged a very long look between one another, Jay finally breaking it and the silence.
“So how did it go with our Luna and Mama Luna?”
“Oh you know, only Lyanna stormed out, so I take it as a huge success”
“What pissed Lyanna off?” Victors asked with raised eyebrows.
“You know how my little sister is. She believes the mating bond is a fairytale, unicorns and rainbows.”
“James doesn’t strike me as unicorns and rainbows when it comes to your mate bond” Jay laughed.
“Exactly. So needless to say Mom and Lyanna went into protective mode. But in the end, Mom accepted James. I think she saw a lot of herself in James. Goddess knows they are both stubborn and strong-willed” I said with a laugh.
“What did your Dad have to say?” Vic asked.
“Dad was incredibly supportive. He believes the Goddess has a reason for all of this, just as I do. But he and my mom both agree, this isn’t going to be easy.”
“Of course not. What Alpha has ever had to deal with something like this?” Jay mumbled.
“I wonder if this has happened before. Maybe there’s some books about it? Didn’t you say her Beta female has been studying up on this and is the one who found out about the ritual?” Victor asked.
“Yeah she is. I wonder if Dimitri would know anything about this since he’s so old. Maybe he’s seen or heard of this happening” I mused.
“Dimitri would know. The guy is a walking history textbook” Jay leaned back in his chair, hands clasped behind his head.
“That’s what happens when your 857 years old” I chuckled “I’ll be sure to ask him when he gets here for the meeting. Did he say when he wanted to have it?”
“In two weeks. He thinks that’s enough time to get the word out and everyone together” Victor said.
“Well, looks like we don’t have time to waste. I’ll start making some phone calls. You all know what to do.” I said, standing up and dismissing them.
I made my way to my desk and got to work pulling my phone out to call the other Alphas. Lunar Moon and Harvest Moon were wary about the vampires, as was expected. But they agreed to come since the meeting would be held here at Opal Moon.
The next Alpha I called was Easton of Blood Moon. He answered on the first ring and agreed to the meeting as well. He had less concerns about the vampires. Apparently Blood Moon has benefitted from strong alliances with other supernatural beings over the years as well, Dimitri included.
After chatting a little longer about how James and the others were settling in, we disconnected the call. It was now time to make the call to Alpha Finley. Surprisingly, he answered.
“Well, well. Alpha Sebastian.” Finley drawled, voice dripping in venom.
“Alpha Finley. I’ll cut to the chase: There has been a rise in rogue vampire activity happening near our borders with Clan Vasile. Their leader Dimitri has called for a meeting and I have agreed to host. For the safety and security of all packs bordering Vasile lands, we are meeting in two weeks. Lunar, Harvest, and Blood Moon packs will be in attendance as well. I know it’s probably a long shot, but I’m asking that you join us”
The other end was quiet for several moments. I wondered if he had hung up until I heard him take a deep breath.
“Two weeks at Opal Moon? We’ll be there” I could hear the smirk playing at his lips.
“Until then, Alpha Sebastian” and the line went dead before I could say anything.
I couldn’t shake this uneasy feeling that settled in my gut. Opening my home to Alpha Finley was going to cost us. I just didn’t know what was the price.
