Chapter 1: Running Away After a Crime
Dozens of blue-collared men and women lined up in four rows in a wide and sophisticated room. Its floor was so squeaky clean that if one looked down on their feet they could see their reflections on it. Steel chairs with blue cushions on them were neatly and evenly stacked on either side of the room. The air smelt of cleaning products covered by the smell of a lavender-scented air freshener. And if one ran their fingers into all corners of that room, not a speck of dust would be collected. The ones responsible for this hair-raising cleanliness were these men and women who were armed with a small cart full of brooms, mops, rags and all other necessities for cleaning. And among them was an eye grabbing a six-foot young man who stood at the back of the row. His blue uniform was one size smaller, the holes in the arms snugged fitly around them, so he had worn it with all the buttons opened. Underneath the uniform was a long sleeved shirt that he put on to hide his tattoos on both of his arms. His hands were inside the pockets of his worn out jeans, playing with the lighter while listening to the person in front of them all. Jay had only been in this line of work for two weeks and got used quickly to it. But this huge building was being nested by the elites of the world, so even requirements for a cleaner were high. And he whose arm full of tattoos with menacing face that lack of polite smiles wouldn’t be able to get in. There were two things that he relied on; his background of being an art student, though he had dropped out in his third year of college. Though this one did so little in his resume. The one thing that helped him the most was he went through the backdoor. That man speaking in front was Chris Garcia, a thirty-something son of a friend of his uncle. Chris helped him get into this empire building when he learned he needed money to continue his studies. The pay here was good for a cleaner and if he could stay here for six months, he could save enough in time for the next semester. Chris ended his speech and told them to disperse to their assigned part of the building. Jay put on his cap that he had hung on his jeans. He made sure that the cap fit snugly on his buzzcut head. Then, he took his own cart and pushed it towards the elevator. As a newcomer and the youngest of them all, he was assigned to clean all the men’s bathrooms except those on the upper floors where the big bosses reside. Only the oldest and most trusted employees were tasked to go there. “Jay, wait!” Jay was about to enter the open elevator when Chris called out to him. “What’s up?” He let the elevator close shut and faced his superior. ”I need you to fill in for Smith today. He texted me, said he had to rush his daughter to the hospital,” Chris explained. “You clean the upper this time.” “Won’t those bosses complain about having a newcomer come to their floor? You said that they heavily guarded their secret files, besides there’s still Grace.” Grace was the middle-aged woman that got assigned to the upper floor. Chris sighed like having the toilet clean was his biggest worry in his life. ”Grace had no time to help. After her work, she was ordered to clean the inventory room. And besides, I trust you. You’ll just have to walk straight to the toilet and no detour, then we’ll have no problems, alright?” Chris patted his shoulder and waited for his reply. Jay removed his hand from his shoulder. It would be extra work, but since it was the superior’s order, he had no choice and nodded. “Alright.” Jay pushed his floor’s destination button and entered the elevator once it opened. “Don’t get distracted and no detours!” Chris reminded him again before the door closed. Jay got off on the 16th floor and found the hallway empty. But that’s to be expected. Right now it’s seven in the morning and another hour before the workers will start pouring in. Jay, wanting to get things done, pushed his cart to the men’s bathroom. He took out his mop and other cleaning materials and decided to clean the cubicle near him. He finished the first one in no time and proceeded to the next. Jay was whistling away as he put in more strength when wiping the floor. A small dark stain had stuck to the tile that he had to curve his body and wipe it away. Jay heard the door open but he did not stop his movement. He must be one of the assistants of the big bosses, the one who always has to be one hour earlier than the boss. He was going to ignore whoever entered but he sensed that the other person had stopped moving behind him. Then, a strong scent assaulted his nose that made his hands slow down. Jay frowned and glanced at the cart beside him. The air freshener he had brought was that of a lavender and he had yet to unseal it. But the smell that surrounded him reminded him of a wood that was mixed with floral scents. An ominous feeling came to him when he felt an abrupt movement behind him and he had yet to straighten his back. A force slammed him on the closed door of the cubicle, large hands gripped the collar of his uniform. A shadow came down on him and something soft had touched his lips. Those things had only taken seconds to happen and Jay had yet to react when that man had started moving. The soft lips were grounded against him, he felt his own were licked by the man’s tongue. Then, his lower lip was taken and got bitten down. Jay cried and was woken from his senses. A man was openly sucking his lips after taking a bite. The man even had the guts to press his body to Jay and grind his lips without any shape. This bastard’s dead. Jay squinted his eyes and threw back his head but the man was out of his mind and dared to follow his lips. Jay reached for him and took the other lips again but this time he bared his teeth. Just like what this bastard had done, he took a bite, but not like his. He clamped his teeth hard until he tasted blood. The bastard grunted and forcibly tore his lips from him. Oh no, you fucker! With their close proximity, Jay sent his right fist into the fucker’s gut. He had put in all his strength, making the guy curl his body in pain. “You sick bastard!” He wasn’t satisfied with just a punch, he took hold of the bastard’s shoulders, raised his knee and slammed it into his face. He raised it again. He won’t be stopped until he vents his anger and erases this psycho’s existence. However, he heard shuffling outside. Fuck. The ants had arrived. And he’ll be caught. He stared coldly at the fucker in his hand. “f**k - !” The fucker had finally come to his senses and glared at him. His nose was bleeding. Jay was a little taken back when he saw the fucker’s eyes. His eyes were like those of a wild animal. Rage and hunger mixed together in his amber with a shade of green eyes. “I, Zinon Stavros, reje - !” His words were cut off because Jay had sent another fist into his face. This time the guy saw stars and went limp. This fucker’s a total psycho. Jay then dragged his body into the last cubicle and made the fucker sit down. He was tempted to drown him in the toilet but he had run out of time. He wiped clean the blood from his fist and from the floor to destroy the evidence, but he knew he'd definitely get arrested. Though not right now, he still had the time to run. He casually pushed his trolley outside and straight to the elevator. There were two to three people that he had encountered on the way. He kept his cap low and they never paid him attention as they were either busy talking on their phones or looking at the files in their hands. The elevator opened and a man had exited. They brushed shoulders as Jay walked past him. He was only a few feet from the elevator but a hand shot out from behind and held his shoulder. “Wait!” Jay closed his eyes, trying to contain his emotions from leaking out. “I haven’t seen you here before,” the man said. Jay had to turn around and greet him. “I was only ordered to come here. The guy who came here had called in sick.” The man had his hair pushed back in a corporate neat hair style complete with eyeglasses. “Is that right?” Jay saw with clear view how the man’s nose had moved as he stepped closer to him. Fuck! Is this upper floor for creeps?! This other fucker was clearly smelling him. Jay stepped back and looked at him in disgust. “Ah, I apologize,” the man backed off with raised hands. “I seemed to catch a scent of someone I know on you. Actually, forget it. It’s impossible. You can go on with your work.” If Jay wasn’t in a hurry to escape he might have sent this another creep straight to where he dumped the first one. He nodded only in response before excusing himself. Hurrying to get out of this creepers’ building.
