The biggest mistake of my life
"If I had known that one reckless night would leave me with a child, I would have asked for his name."
The biggest mistake of my life wasn't sleeping with a stranger.
It was leaving before the sun came up.
Five years later...
I still don't know his name.
***
Five Years Earlier...
Rain poured relentlessly over the city, turning the streets into shimmering rivers beneath the glowing lights.
Amelia Carter stood outside St. Mary's Hospital, clutching a brown envelope tightly against her chest.
Inside it was her mother's death certificate.
Everything she had ever called home had disappeared in a single day.
Her mother had battled cancer for two long years.
Two years of hospital visits, unpaid bills, sleepless nights, and whispered prayers that never seemed to reach heaven.
Now she was gone.
Amelia felt numb.
Her eyes drifted to the engagement ring on her finger.
She wasn't married yet.
But she had foolishly believed she soon would be.
Her phone vibrated.
Daniel.
Her fiancé.
A tiny smile appeared on her face before she opened the message.
It disappeared instantly.
"Don't come looking for me again. I never loved you. I only stayed because I pitied you."
Her heart stopped.
Before she could process the words, another message appeared.
A photo.
Daniel was kissing another woman.
The caption read:
"She said yes! Can't wait to spend forever with the love of my life."
The post had been uploaded less than an hour ago.
The same day Amelia buried her mother.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"So today wasn't enough?" she whispered.
"You had to break me completely?"
She laughed bitterly.
It sounded more like crying.
Without another thought, she blocked his number, switched off her phone, and walked aimlessly through the rain.
She had nowhere to go.
No family.
No fiancé.
No home that still felt like home.

Across the city...
Inside the luxurious Sky Palace Hotel...
The atmosphere couldn't have been more different.
Champagne glasses clinked.
Music echoed across the rooftop lounge.
Successful businessmen laughed while photographers captured every glamorous moment.
Yet one man stood alone near the glass railing.
Adrian Kingsley.
Thirty years old.
CEO of Kingsley Global.
One of the youngest billionaires in the country.
Everyone admired him.
Everyone wanted to be him.
No one knew his world had collapsed only hours earlier.
He had planned to surprise his fiancée with an early dinner.
Instead...
He found her in his bed.
With his best friend.
His cousin Ethan walked over and handed him a glass of whiskey.
"You've had enough."
Adrian accepted the drink anyway.
"I haven't had nearly enough."
"You should go home."
Adrian let out a dry laugh.
"I don't have a home anymore."
"You still own the penthouse."
"A house isn't a home."
He emptied the glass in one gulp.
"The moment I saw them together... everything died."
***
Three hours later...
Amelia wandered into the same hotel.
She wasn't dressed like everyone else.
Her black dress was simple.
Her shoes were soaked from the rain.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She quietly sat at the bar.
"What can I get you?" the bartender asked.
"A glass of wine."
One became two.
Two became three.
She wasn't trying to forget.
She was trying to survive the night.
***
On the opposite side of the lounge...
Adrian stared into another glass of whiskey.
He had lost count of how many he'd finished.
His cousin sighed.
"I'm leaving."
Adrian nodded.
"I'll be fine."
"You don't look fine."
"I'm not."
"But I'll survive."
After a moment's hesitation, Ethan walked away.
For the first time in years...
Adrian Kingsley was completely alone.
***
Midnight arrived.
The bartender announced last orders.
Amelia stood up.
Immediately, the room spun.
"Oh..."
She reached for the counter but missed.
Her heels slipped.
She stumbled backwards.
Straight into someone.
Strong arms wrapped around her before she could hit the floor.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"It's okay."
His voice was calm.
Deep.
Comforting.
She slowly looked up.
Their eyes met.
Neither smiled.
Both looked exhausted.
"You've been crying," he said softly.
"My mother died today."
His expression changed instantly.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"And you?"
"My fiancée cheated on me."
Silence.
The noisy lounge disappeared around them.
For a brief moment...
It felt as though they were the only two people in the world.
"The people we love," Amelia whispered, "always seem to hurt us the most."
Adrian nodded.
"I've just learned that."
For reasons neither of them understood...
It felt easy talking to each other.
No pretending.
No masks.
No expectations.
***
They spent hours talking.
Not about money.
Not about work.
Not about names.
Instead...
They spoke about grief.
Heartbreak.
Loneliness.
Broken dreams.
The fear of starting over.
For the first time that day...
Amelia genuinely smiled.
"You have a beautiful smile," Adrian said.
"I almost forgot how to use it."
"So did I."
Outside, rain continued pouring.
"There won't be any taxis," Amelia sighed.
"I'll take you home."
She looked away.
"I don't want to go home."
Neither did he.
Home only reminded him of betrayal.
"There are rooms upstairs," Adrian said quietly.
"No pressure."
"If you want to leave, I'll call someone for you."
Amelia stared into his eyes.
She saw no lust.
No arrogance.
Only sadness.
The same sadness she carried inside her.
After a long silence...
She nodded.
"Okay."
They walked toward the elevator together.
Neither of them noticed the elderly woman watching from the corner of the lounge.
She smiled knowingly.
"Fate has strange ways of bringing people together," she murmured.
As the elevator doors closed, neither Amelia nor Adrian knew that before sunrise...
They would unknowingly create a bond that could never be broken.
A bond that would return five years later...
In the form of a little boy with his father's eyes.
End of Chapter One.
