To Be Someone Else
Settled on my bed, I took small sips from my pumpkin spice latte while rewatching a movie that I've seen countless times. Interview with a vampire. In all honestly, the movie has a lot of flaws concerning vampires, not that mortals really know anything about vampires in the first place. Though I always appreciate the way the showed the hunt for them. And I always believe that they never should have tried to kill Lestat that way. I gave a sigh as I took another sip of my latte, giving a long look at the vampires they had set in the movie.
“We don’t look like death, you morons.” I muttered. I looked away. “However, they are right, it is forbidden to make someone so young.”
A vibrate rang out from the edge of the bed. I looked over to see my phone, the screen blue with a single name on it. Slowly, I pick it up.
“Yes Zion?”
“Hey!” He called out in a very loud manner. “Whatcha doing?”
“Watching Interview with a Vampire.”
“What? Again? It’s really gay you know that.”
“You just think that because of how close the guys get to each other’s faces.”
“Duh! That movie was made by a woman who loves yaoi.”
“I’m not even sure yaoi was a thing at the time.” I rolled my eyes.
“Sure it was! Yaoi is always there like—”
“It was made in the 1970s.”
There was silence.
“Did you seriously just wiki that right now?”
“You know how I am.”
There was a sigh. “Yeah I do. Always looking for a way to find out anything, even if it’s false information.”
“I never look up false information.”
“Wiki is not reliable and you know that.”
“It is the starting point of good research.”
There came another sigh. “Still proves that I was right. The author was into yaoi, because that movie came out in the 90’s, and yaoi came out in the 70’s.”
This time, I gave my sigh before taking the last drink of my pumpkin latte. “Anything for you to win your argument huh?”
“Always!” I knew he had a grin on his face that stretched from ear to ear. “So when are you coming over for dinner again?”
I glanced at my calendar that hung above my television. “Not for a while.” In truth, there was nothing on my calendar besides work.
He gave a wince. “How does that look on me to have my future wife never come over to dinner?”
“It looks like I am busy.”
“Now, now, don’t give me those dagger looks even over the phone.”
“You know how I feel about you calling me your future wife.”
“And you also know that neither one of us can escape our fates Zelda.”
“I know Zion, but I would like to pretend that I can sometimes. You telling me every day that I’m going to be your future wife isn’t helping me.”
“A—” a small low beep was heard from my phone. I glanced at it. “Oh work is calling me. I have to go.”
“Fine.”
“Hello?” I answered.
“Zelda! When are you coming to work?” It was my loving boss. She meant well, even though she was always yelling at me.
“My schedule says 4:30, and it’s only 3:17 right now.”
“Yeah well someone called out. I need you to come in as soon as you can.”
“Probably will be 3:30 just let me get dressed.”
“Fine. I’ll see you then.” Click.
I roll off my bed, hitting the floor with a thump. I crawled over to my dresser, grabbing the clothes from the top, dragging them down to me. I jumped up, fully clothed, and ready for work. It was now 3:21 and I had to leave now if I wanted to make it on time.
I walked into work, everyone was moving around, yelling out food orders. I mean what do you except from a Taco Bell. I slowly made my way into the back and put my things away. Happily no one saw me. I made it up to the front, clocked in and began washing my hands as is the way when entering into your shift.
“Hi everyone!”
A resounding hello was heard from everyone. The manager in charge, Pip yelled at me to jump on line to begin making the food. I didn’t hesitate as I put my rubber gloves on. I walked over and quickly scanned the screen, beginning to make the food. Pip was barking out orders, but it wasn’t unusual to see that since he was pretty lazy and wanted to make sure everyone was doing something, even if he wasn’t.
I mainly ignored him unless he was directly talking to me. It was pretty busy but that’s pretty common for a Friday night. My boss walked past me, firmly telling someone to do something for her. I don’t like to say yelling because her yelling at you looks really different.
“Hi Marie.” I said as she walked past me for the second time.
She stopped in her tracks and smiled at me. “I didn’t even hear you come in. You don’t say hi or nothing.” She frowned at me. “You little b—.”
“Marie!” Someone yelled from the front. “Can you do a refund for me?” Marie quickly went up to the front to help the cashier.
Pip laughed, “Saved by the bell.”
“More like saved by a disgruntle customer.” I muttered under my breath, but just loud enough for Pip to hear me.
Now I won’t bore you with all the details of my work, but the day was busy and I didn’t really like how hard I worked.
“It’s midnight.” I announced to Layla. She was a dark beauty, which ironically was what her name meant.
She groaned, paired with her rolling eyes. “All right Zelda! Fine you can go home.”
I laughed, “Thank you!” I quickly ran, grabbed my stuff and ran out. “Bye guys!”
I took a step outside and quickly saw a dark figure leaning against my car. I took a deep breath, I did not smell human.
“May I help you?” I snapped rather quickly.
The man pushed off my car and stalked towards me. I wasn’t afraid for my safety but rather if the cameras picked up on something I do to a ‘potential’ customer.
“Well, Zelda, you sure are older now.”
As he got closer, my nose wrinkled. “Oh for f**k’s sake it you.” I lowered my guard and rolled my eyes as I walked to my car. He was close behind me.
“Don’t leave without saying a proper good bye.” He made a grab for my door handle.
“Don’t you dare touch me, you slimy Incubus.” I said with more venom than I intended but it’s not like he didn’t deserve it. He resembled a ghost, pale skin, white hair, and tall, lanky body.
He seemed to purr as he leaned against the door once more, this time, wedging himself between me and the car. “Oh Zelda, please let me show you a good time again.”
“If you think it was a good time, you must have been more drunk off humans that I realized.” Now, fully annoyed, I pushed him off of my door.
He let out a small chuckle. “Zelda, one day you will want me back and when that day comes, I’ll be waiting with a willing d**k and open arms.”
“I think it’s supposed to be open arms.” I said right before I closed the door, ignoring what else he could possibly say.
My skin was crawling, and I quickly hit the call button, having it dial Zion.
Click.
“Zion,” I snapped, not waiting for him to say hello. “You’ll never guess who saw me at my work.”
“Who?” He sounded sleepy.
“Eli, the prick of an Incubus.”
“What?” Now he sounded more awake.
“Yeah,” I turned the corner. “I handled him for the most part but I’m still annoyed.”
“Zel, you really shouldn’t be alone with anyone from our world. Things have changed since you’ve left.”
I gave out a grunt. “Thanks for the warning because I have dinner with my mom and brother tomorrow.”
There was silence. “Should I go with you?”
I shook my head, even though he couldn’t see it. “Nah, it’s fine. You know how her majesty is.”
He gave a nervous chuckle. “Yeah, I do.”
“Anyways, I’m home. I’ll talk to you later.”
“’kay Zel.”
Click. I turned off the engine of my car, looking out at my house. It was a modest one story house. A few rose bushes in the front, a fireplace you could see from the front yard and a nice wrap around porch. The closest neighbor was a ways from me, about half a mile from me.
I got out of the car, walking up to the front door. I didn’t park in the garage, didn’t believe in being trapped should something happen. There was a motorcycle in the garage should I couldn’t get access to my car. But that was mainly for emergencies.
I placed my stuff on the small table by the door, and looked at the lights that were off, but still could see everything.
“Remember, this is what you wanted. To be home to no one.” I wrapped my arms around me, and proceeded to my room, where I stripped, took a shower, and crawled into bed. Night sleep got easier as the time passed, but it wasn’t like I really could sleep anyways. Not with the demons around me.
