Open the door
Serena’s POV: “Vanessa Powell! Open this f*****g door before we break it down!” The shout hit me like a slap. I froze in the kitchen with a sandwich halfway to my mouth. Another hard bang followed. The wood cracked. I dropped the sandwich. The plate smashed on the floor. Two men shoved the broken door open and stepped inside like they owned the place. “There she is, ” the shorter one said. He smiled in a way that made my skin crawl. father owes a lot of money, Vanessa. Time is up. ” “Your My heart slammed so hard I could hear it. I backed up and grabbed the biggest knife from the drawer. “Get out of my apartment. ” The tall one held up his phone. My father’s face filled the screen. Marcus Kent looked older and scared. A dark bruise sat under his left eye. “He has until midnight, ” the tall one said. first. Then maybe his ears. ” “You pay or we start taking pieces of him. Fingers I had nothing. The consulting work only covered rent and food. Every extra dollar went to interest on debts I never made. My father had promised the wrong people years ago and those people never forgot. “I need more time, ” I said. My voice shook even though I tried to stop it. “You don’t get more time. ” The shorter man came around the counter fast. I swung the knife. He caught my wrist and twisted hard. Pain shot up my arm. The knife clattered to the floor. He shoved me against the refrigerator so hard the door rattled. “You should have paid when you had the chance, ” he whispered near my face. New footsteps cut through the noise. Both men turned. I looked past them and felt the air leave my body. Charles Humphrey stood in the broken doorway. Tall, dark hair, eyes like cold steel, and a black suit. He looked at the two men the way someone looks at a bug they are about to crush under their shoe. “You are in the wrong place, ” he said. His voice was low and calm and more dangerous than any shout. The tall man tried to sound tough. “This has nothing to do with you, rich boy. ” Charles walked in calmly. He stopped a few feet away and pulled a folded paper from his jacket. He held it out. “The debt belongs to me now. Take this and leave while you can still walk. ” The shorter man grabbed the paper, read it, and his face went pale. Whatever was written there was enough. He shoved the paper back, muttered something to his partner, and both of them left fast. The broken door hung open behind them. Silence filled the apartment. I stayed against the refrigerator, breathing hard. Charles closed the door as well as it would close and turned to face me. Three years of hiding and he had found me in the middle of this mess. “Serena Kent, ” he said. The name hit harder than the men’s hands. No one had said it out loud in years. Not since the night Daniel disappeared and the whole city decided I was the reason the Humphrey fortune fell apart. I forced my voice to work. “You have the wrong person. ” “I don’t. ” He looked around the small kitchen, the broken plate, the cheap chairs. “Vanessa Powell. You help other people with their money. New name, same face that ran three years ” ago. I moved so the counter stood between us. “What do you want from me?” “Six months. ” I stared at him. “Of what?” “Marriage. ” He set an envelope on the counter. “You sign, you take my name and you live in my house. In return every debt your father has is gone tonight. Those men never touch him again. The people still hunting you will think twice before they come near you. ” I let out a short bitter laugh. “You want to marry the woman you think killed your brother. ” His eyes stayed cold. “I want the truth about the night Daniel disappeared. You were the last person with him and you ran. The company lost everything. People blamed you. I built it all back while I searched for you. Now I have you. ” Daniel’s name still cut deep. I remembered his laugh. The way his eyes lit up when he already knew what everyone else would do next. I remembered pieces of that night and nothing that made sense. The rest was just empty black space. “I don’t remember, ” I said. “I have told everyone who asked for three years. ” “Then you get six months under my roof to try harder. ” I looked at the envelope. My hands felt ice cold. Saying no meant my father stayed in danger. Saying yes meant walking straight into the house of the man who had spent three years wanting me to suffer. “Why not just hand me to the police?” I asked. “Why a marriage contract?” “Because making it public is too clean and fast. I want you close. I want every secret you still carry. And I want the people who helped you disappear to know you belong to me now. ” Belong to him. The words sat between us like a threat that had already started. I thought about the photo of my father and the fear in his eyes. I thought about three years of checking every street corner before I stepped outside. I thought about the missing pieces that woke me up at night. Daniel’s voice. Running. Something important in my hands. Then nothing. Charles waited. He had all the time in the world. I had until midnight. I opened the envelope. The papers were clean and hard. Six months. Live in his house, be seen with him as his wife, no talking to reporters. He gets full access to my money records and my phone. In return my father’s debts are paid in full and people will keep the hunters away. There were more lines about what happened if I left early. Words about money and control that made my stomach twist. I kept reading because I had no other choice. “You planned this for a long time, ” I said. “I plan everything that matters. ” I picked up the pen he held out. My hand stayed steady when I wrote my real name. Serena Kent. The letters looked strange after so many years of writing a different one. Charles took the papers, checked the signature, and slid them into his jacket. need. One bag. We leave now. ” “Pack what you “Now?” “The license is already filed under your real name. The wedding happens tonight. Private and fast. My car is downstairs. ” I stared at him. “You can’t possibly be serious. ” “Do I look like I’m joking?” I walked to the bedroom on legs that did not feel like they belonged to me and threw clothes into a bag. My passport and a small box of things I had kept from my old life. Nothing else felt worth taking. I came back out and Charles stood by the broken door with his phone to his ear. He spoke in a low voice. I heard enough. “Pay the full amount. Make sure it reaches Marcus Kent before midnight. ” He hung up and looked at me. “It’s done. Your father is safe. ” The words should have brought relief. They only made the tight feeling in my chest worse. We left the apartment without locking anything. There was nothing left to protect. The black car at the curb was quiet and expensive. Charles opened the door for me to get in. The seats felt cold against my legs. He sat across from me. City lights moved past the windows. I kept my eyes on the glass and forced my breathing to stay even. “You will use the name Vanessa Powell when we are outside, ” he said. “Inside the house, you are Serena. You don’t leave without the people I assign and you answer every question I ask about Daniel. ” “And if I still can’t remember?” “Then we keep digging until something comes back. ” The car turned onto a private road lined with tall trees. The house rose up ahead of us. Stone and glass and quiet power. Lights glowed in many windows. It looked like a place that could swallow a person and never spit them back out. Charles got out first and I followed. The air felt cool on my face. My bag felt heavier than it should. He led me through the front doors. The entrance was huge. Shiny floors, a wide staircase that curved up. Paintings on the walls that probably cost more than everything I had ever owned. No one else met us at the door. He walked me up the stairs himself. The hallway stretched long and quiet. He opened a door at the end and stepped aside. The room was bigger than my whole apartment. Large bed. Soft chairs. Windows that went from floor to ceiling and looked out over dark grounds. Another door on the side wall that led somewhere I did not want to think about yet. He set my bag down. “Breakfast is at eight. Don’t try the windows. They are locked. ” He left without another word. I stood in the middle of the room and listened to the silence. Three years of running had ended with a signature and a house that belonged to the man who wanted me to pay for a night I still could not remember. I walked into the bathroom and turned on the light. My face looked back at me. Dark brown hair around my shoulders. Brown eyes that looked tired and scared. Skin that had gone pale. I opened the small box I had brought and took out the only thing that still tied me to the night everything ended. A silver cuff link. Daniel’s. I had found it in my coat pocket the morning after he disappeared. I had never told a single person about it. I turned it over slowly in my fingers. The side door opened without a knock. Charles stood there. His jacket was gone. His sleeves were rolled up. His eyes locked on the cuff link in my hand like it was a weapon. His voice came out quiet and hard and full of something that sounded like rage mixed with shock. “Where the hell did you get that?”
