EVELYN'S POV
If there was one thing I had learned within the first five minutes of arriving at Blackridge Academy that morning… It was that rich people had a very strange definition of "normal."
I was still annoyed about what had happened outside the school gates.
No!!!.
Annoyed wasn't the right word.
I was irritated.
Who did Damien Ashford think he was to treat me like a piece of s**t?
The one who almost ran me over was acting as though I had committed some terrible crime by accidentally bumping into his motorcycle when he clearly wasn't looking too.
The more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it became.
I adjusted the strap of my backpack and continued walking toward the main building, trying to push him out of my mind and it wasn't difficult.
I hadn't come to Blackridge Academy to make friends or even make enemies with spoiled rich boys.
If I graduated with outstanding results, I could earn a full university scholarship and ease my mom the stress of working herself out to pay my schoolfees in the university.
As I climbed the staircase leading toward the main building, I noticed something strange.
Girls were whispering almost everywhere while others fixed their hair using their phone cameras.
One even pulled her friend behind a marble pillar. "What are you doing?" another girl whispered.
"Shhh!"
"He's coming."
"Stop pushing!"
"I want to see him first girlll !"
Curiosity got the better of me and I slowed my pace as I observed several girls hid behind flower bushes lining the courtyard, others pretended to read books they were literally holding them upside down.
A group of seniors stood near the fountain while constantly glancing toward the parking lot and… one girl actually sprayed perfume on herself ? What the hell ?
Were celebrities visiting? A well known teacher? An actor?
Then… I heard it.
The same sound from the motorcycle that almost hit me came through my ears, I turned and shock trailed through my body.
The girls around me suddenly became even more excited.
"Oh my gosh..."
"It's Damien."
"He looks so handsome today."
"I heard he broke someone's nose yesterday because he objected his opinion."
"I know..."
"And somehow he's even hotter."
Another girl sighed dramatically. "I wish he'd look at me just once."
I blinked.
Then looked at the girls, then toward the motorcycle and back at the girls again.
"...Seriously?"
One of them overheard me. "What?"
"You all..." I pointed toward Damien, who had just parked his motorcycle. "...like him?"
Several girls stared at me as though I had asked whether the sky was green.
"What do you mean 'like him'?"
"Everyone likes Damien."
I looked back at him in disgust.
He removed his helmet without the slightest expression on his face. .
Didn't smile or wave at the girls misbehaving. He literally didn't acknowledge anyone.
He simply slung his backpack over one shoulder and began walking toward the building.
Girls practically melted wherever he passed, some secretly took photographs while others whispered his name like it was some kind of holy something…. Gross!!!.
I honestly couldn't understand it.
"He's terrifying." I whispered not expecting anyone to hear me but then..
The girls gasped.
"What did you just say?"
"I said he's scary."
"You've lost your mind."
"No..."
I folded my arms.
"I think all of you have… I mean He hasn't smiled once, He looks like he'd rather fight someone than say a good morning and I'm pretty sure he's allergic to basic manners too."
One girl shook her head dramatically. "That's exactly why he's attractive."
"...I'm concerned." I said without thinking, literally knowing it's abnormal for someone to like a guy like this.
She laughed. "You really are a scholarship student I guess because we elites know his worth."
"What does that have to do with anything?"
"You don't know anything about Blackridge."
"I guess not."
She leaned closer. "Damien Ashford isn't just handsome… He's dangerous… a mafia prince to be precise.”
"Dangerous isn't attractive." I shot back.
She smiled knowingly. "You'll understand eventually."
"I sincerely hope not." I said leaving her presence.
The girls returned their attention to Damien, making me roll my eyes.
Some people clearly enjoyed making their own lives complicated for real. I preferred peace and happiness.
As I entered the main hallway, the atmosphere changed completely.
Unlike outside, where students chatted freely, the inside of Blackridge Academy felt almost... regal.
Everything looked more like a museum than a school.
Students walked confidently through the corridors.
Everyone seemed to know exactly where they belonged…. Except me.
I quietly checked my timetable before heading toward the administration office.
The scholarship orientation was supposed to begin before first period and a secretary directed me toward one of the conference rooms.
As I approached, laughter drifted through the open doorway. Inside sat around twenty scholarship students.
Some looked nervous and others excited.
I recognized a few faces from outside and I slipped into one of the empty seats at the back.
A few minutes later...The room suddenly became silent as someone entered.
I looked toward the door as an extremely beautiful girl walked inside carrying several folders. She looked really happy and almost… perfect.
"Good morning, everyone." Her voice came in a gentle manner."I'm Isabella Sinclair."
A few students immediately whispered.
"That's her."
"The student council president."
"The Golden Girl."
"I've heard she's top of the entire school."
"They say every university already wants her."
"She's beautiful."
"And kind."
"And captain of almost everything."
I quietly listened… Golden Girl?
Isabella laughed softly after noticing everyone's nervous expressions.
"You don't have to look so frightened everyone…This isn't an interview okey."
"I remember sitting exactly where you are because I was a scholarship student inasmuch as my parents were rich."
Her words immediately relaxed the room.
She began walking between the rows, personally handing each student a welcome package.
When she reached me...She paused.
"You must be Evelyn."
I blinked."You know my name?"
She smiled. "I read all the scholarship applications love. Congratulations, You worked very hard to get here."
Heat rushed to my cheeks as I opened my mouth to speak. "Thank you."
She handed me my folder and added. "I hope Blackridge treats you kindly."
She was really nice unlike everyone else I'd met that morning… She didn't look at me differently because I wasn't wealthy.
She simply treated me like another normal student.
She continued speaking to everyone. "If any of you ever need help..."
"My office door is always open, Whether it's academics...Financial concerns...Or you simply need someone to talk to...You're not alone here okey."
The room remained unusually quiet, unlike a hall filled with teenagers. Students listened and she literally deserved the respect she is getting right now.
Then one boy raised his hand. "Why do people call you the Golden Girl?"
Several students laughed at the question, even Isabella looked embarrassed in a funny way.
"I wish they'd stop calling me that."
"But they won't."
A teacher standing beside her smiled.
"They call her that because she's the perfect example of a Blackridge student."
I noticed Isabella's smile fade ever so slightly as the teacher continued proudly.
"Highest grades, Student council president, Volunteer work, Debate champion, Music awards….” The teacher's list was literally endless.
I watched as everyone kept asking questions but I also noticed something, the way Isabella's face was… like she wasn't really happy but was trying to be.
The orientation ended shortly afterward and as students left the room, Isabella stopped beside me once more.
"Evelyn?"
"Yes?"
"I've heard wonderful things about your academic record I hope you'll enjoy your time here."
"I hope so too."
She hesitated, almost as though she wanted to say something else.
Instead...She simply smiled again.
"I'll see you around."
"You too." I said almost immediately.
I watched her disappear into the hallway where dozens of students immediately greeted her.
I gathered my books before checking the time….Lunch. finally I thought.
My stomach had been complaining for almost an hour while we were in the orientation hall.
The cafeteria was enormous as I entered.
Students occupied nearly every table, which made me understand the school's population was huge.
I grabbed a tray and quietly searched for an empty seat, when Suddenly...
The noise began fading, and every conversation stopped one by one
Confused, I looked over my shoulder. “ Why him.” I whispered under my breath.
Damien had just walked into the cafeteria.
He didn't look around and he didn't acknowledge the silence either.
His hands remained inside his pockets as he casually walked between the tables.
Then… He stopped beside one table near the window and without saying a single word… every boy sitting there immediately froze.
One exchanged nervous glances with another and within seconds… The entire group of boys sitting there stood up without an argument.
Damien calmly pulled out a chair and sat down. After a few seconds, a lady came to his table with his lunch…. While every other student goes to get their lunch themselves.
I still couldn't bring myself to understand what exactly happened.
