Chapter 1
PREMISE ISABELLA'S POV My hands were shaking, not out of pressure that comes with crowd but a different kind of anxiety. This was completely different, trembling that started deep inside my chest, crawled into my arms, and refused to stop no matter how many times I told myself to breathe properly. The tiny red light on the recorder blinked… showing it was recording and waiting for me to speak. I stared at it for a long moment I'm total silence while sweat ran through my body. For months, speaking into a microphone had become second nature to me. I had spent countless nights in my room, exposing secrets as podcast without anyone knowing I'm the one due to the danger attached to it. If change my voice to keep myself safe, and made sure my door and windows wete properly locked to avoid anyone coming in. I turned off the recorder with shaky hands, telling myself I'll switch it on again after I'd gotten enough courage. But tonight... My voice refused to come out due to intense fear. I rubbed my sweaty palms against my skirt before forcing myself to press the recorder closer. "Come on, Isabella," I whispered to myself. "You've come too far." I swallowed the lump in my throat as the red light continued blinking. I closed my eyes as every face flashed through my mind, and the fact that Professor Hawthorne kept telling me to stop asking questions before I ended up regretting it… she always cared for me and always wanted the best for me, but I couldn't stay silent. I blinked hardly and tap on the recorder to start. "If you're listening to this..." I couldn't recognize my own voice anymore as I continued. "...I was too late." A tear slipped down my cheek before I quickly wiped it away. "They found me before I could tell the whole story." I looked over my shoulder…. Nothing but just darkness. Still… The strange feeling of being watched refused to leave. "If I disappear..." My voice cracked. "...don't believe anything they say." I took another shaky breath. "And whatever you do..." THUD!!!!!!!!!!!!! A loud creak echoed outside the door making me flinch. Someone was definitely there. I slowly looked toward the window as my breathing became shallow. Just as I turned back to quickly finish up my recording, a mental like object hits my hard on the head and all I could see now was darkness. CHAPTER ON EVELYN'S POV My alarm had rung twenty-three minutes ago. I knew because I'd pressed snooze exactly four times before my mother finally shouted from the kitchen. "Evelyn! You'll be late again!" "I'm awake!" I yelled back, although I was very much still lying face down on my pillow. The smell of her fried eggs drifted into my room, that alone was enough to make me sit up. I rubbed my eyes remembering I hadn't slept much after my night shift at the bookstore. I smiled to myself at the mirror before getting dressed in my Blackridge Academy uniform… It was literally a dream come true to finally attend one of the most outstanding school in town. Every single morning I still had to remind myself that I actually got a scholarship into the same school children of billionaires, judges, celebrities and politicians attended. I knew if I was to survive here, I'll have to lay low and stay out of trouble. I immediately remembered how happy my mother was after I got this scholarship.. though I believed she wasn't that happy but for my happiness she accepted anyway, telling me to lay low and avoid being known by people till I graduated. "Evelyn!" My mom shouted, making me cut off my thoughts. "I'm coming!" I hurried into the kitchen, grabbed two slices of toast and kissed Mom's cheek. She looked exhausted, dark circles were under her eyes. "You worked another night shift." I asked knowing she wasn't around, else she'll know I worked at night too. She smiled. "I'm fine baby." "You always say that." "And you're always late to school… it isn't good to start up this new school as a late student… it will make students and staffs know you." I laughed because she wasn't wrong. After breakfast, I slung my backpack over my shoulder. "I'll stop by the bookstore after classes." "Don't overwork yourself." "I won't mom." "Promise?" "I promise." She smiled again and that smile alone made my early morning worth it. The walk to school didn't take much time. Students filled the sidewalks leading toward Blackridge Academy, luxury cars lined the entrance and drivers opened doors for students dressed in perfectly ironed uniforms. Meanwhile... I was running with toast still in my mouth. The academy gates finally came into view and relief washed over me. Until…. A loud engine roared beside me. I turned way too quickly and my shoulder slammed into something hard. Books exploded from my arms and pages scattered across the pavement like frightened birds. "Ahhhhhh!" I stumbled backwards before catching myself. The motorcycle hadn't moved, Its owner slowly removed one black glove, then another. Only then did I look up. The boy sitting on the motorcycle looked completely unbothered after almost hitting a lady. He is tall, with broad shoulders and dark hair falling over his eyes. His school tie hung loose around his neck as though rules had never applied to him and his expression remained unreadable. I quickly bent down knowing I need no problem and said. "I'm sorry." I gathered my books as fast as I could, Instead of helping… He simply watched me as though I was bowing to him. One notebook had slid beneath the motorcycle, I reached for it and before my fingers touched it, a heavy boot stepped on the cover. I froze instantly and slowly... My eyes lifted to his face again and he looked down at me without the slightest hint of guilt. "You should watch where you're going pig." I blinked in confusion “Excuse me? and I said I was sorry." "So?" I frowned instantly. "You hit my bike." He continued in a cold tune. "I hit your bike?" He didn't answer. Instead, he moved his foot a little for me to retrieve my notebook. Then he started the motorcycle again and zoomed off without saying a simple sorry. I stood there holding my books on my chest. "What an unbelievable jerk." A girl walking beside me snorted. "You must be new." "I've been here for a while.. I lied so avoid gaining attention as a new student." "Then how don't you know who that is?" "I don't for real." She stared at me as though I'd confessed I didn't know the principal. "That's Damien Ashford." The name meant absolutely nothing to me for real because I literally didn't care who the hell he was. She leaned closer. "Trust me…. You don't want problems with him." Before I could ask why...She hurried away.
