Chapter Five – The Silent War The days that followed were tense. Every time Claire and Ethan had to meet for work, the air between them was heavy. They spoke about business, nothing else. But behind each word was the weight of the past. Claire wore her mask well. She smiled when she had to, stayed professional, and never once showed weakness. But at night, when she lay alone in bed, her mask slipped. She remembered how Ethan once held her, how safe she felt with him. And then she remembered the silence—the unanswered calls, the sudden end. That memory burned stronger than her love. One afternoon, she left the Hudson office late. The streets were quiet, the sky already dark. As she walked to her car, she noticed a group of men hanging around the parking lot. They looked at her in a way that made her uneasy. She quickened her steps, fumbling for her keys. Before she could panic, a familiar voice cut through the air. “Claire.” Ethan. He walked up quickly, his eyes sharp as he glanced at the men. They backed off immediately at his presence. Ethan placed himself between her and the danger, his tone calm but firm. “I’ll walk you to your car.” Claire hesitated. Part of her wanted to refuse, but another part—the part that still remembered his touch—stayed quiet. “Fine,” she said coldly. They walked in silence until she reached her car. Ethan opened the door for her, just like he used to. “Claire,” he said softly, “I never stopped caring.” She froze for a second, her heart betraying her with a quick, painful beat. But she forced herself to stay strong. “You cared so much that you vanished without a word?” she snapped. “Don’t pretend now.” His face tightened. He wanted to tell her the truth, to explain everything, but the fear of his family’s threats still chained his words. Instead, he whispered, “I did it for you.” Claire’s anger flared. “Don’t twist this. You broke me, Ethan. You don’t get to make yourself the hero.” She got into her car and slammed the door, leaving him standing there under the dim streetlights. As she drove off, her hands trembled. Why did he still make her heart ache? Why did a part of her want to believe him? Later that night, Ethan sat in his room, his head in his hands. Every word from Claire cut deeper than his father’s threats ever had. He wanted to protect her, but now he realized that in protecting her, he had destroyed her trust. And trust was harder to win back than love. Still, Ethan was determined. If his family would never bend, then he would have to break the chains himself. He would find a way to stand against them, no matter the cost. Claire, on the other hand, whispered to herself as she stared at the ceiling in the dark: “He’ll feel what I felt. I won’t forgive. Not yet.” Neither of them knew it, but their silent war had only just begun
