Chapter Six – Her First Move Claire stood in front of the mirror that morning, her reflection staring back at her with cold determination. For weeks, she had carried the weight of Ethan’s sudden reappearance. His words haunted her—“I never stopped caring.” But she couldn’t let herself believe him. Not after the pain. If he wanted her forgiveness, he wasn’t going to get it easily. At work, she kept her smile sharp and her tone professional. But beneath that mask, she had already decided on her first move. If Ethan thought he could just walk back into her life and protect her like some silent guardian, she would show him that she didn’t need him. That she could be stronger, colder, smarter. The opportunity came during a meeting with the Hudson executives. Ethan was presenting a proposal for a new business deal. He spoke confidently, his voice steady, but Claire noticed the way his father, Mr. Hudson, watched every word, every gesture. The old man’s approval meant everything to Ethan. When the presentation ended, Claire spoke up. Her tone was calm, her words polite—but she raised questions. Sharp questions. “Your numbers are good,” she said, flipping through the report. “But the risks here seem higher than you explained. If the partners don’t deliver, this could cost the company millions. Isn’t that right?” The room went silent. Ethan’s jaw tightened. She was right—he had left out that detail on purpose to make the proposal sound stronger. Mr. Hudson’s frown deepened. “Ethan, is this true?” Ethan glanced at Claire. For a moment, their eyes locked. He saw it then—the quiet fire in her gaze. She wasn’t just doing her job. She was striking back. “Yes,” he admitted slowly. “There are risks.” Mr. Hudson’s voice was cold. “Then don’t waste my time with half-truths. Fix this.” The meeting ended quickly, and Ethan was left humiliated. Claire walked out without a single glance at him, but inside, her heart raced. Hurting him had felt… powerful. A piece of her pain finally given back. That evening, Ethan found her by the elevator. His voice was low, almost pleading. “Why are you doing this, Claire?” She looked at him, her face unreadable. “Doing what? I’m just doing my job. Maybe you should do yours better.” “Claire, please,” he whispered. “I never wanted to hurt you.” Her eyes hardened. “But you did. And now, you’ll know what it feels like.” The elevator doors opened, and she stepped inside, leaving him standing there. For the first time, Ethan realized something frightening. Claire wasn’t just angry. She was ready to fight. And this fight wouldn’t just break him—it could break them both. That night, Claire lay awake, her thoughts torn. A small part of her still remembered the boy who once held her hand under the stars, who whispered dreams into the night. But that boy had vanished the moment he walked away without a word. Now, she told herself, all that remained was a man she had to make pay. And she would.
