Chapter Seven – Ethan’s Strategy Ethan sat alone in his office long after everyone had gone. Papers were spread across his desk, but his mind wasn’t on numbers. It was on Claire. The way she had questioned him in the meeting, the sharpness in her tone—he knew it wasn’t just business. It was her way of striking back. He couldn’t even blame her. He had left her without a word, broken her trust, and now she was showing him the strength she had built from that pain. But if she thought he was going to step aside, she was wrong. Ethan leaned back in his chair. For years, he had obeyed his family’s rules, hoping they would one day accept Claire. But now, after seeing how far they were willing to go, he understood the truth: they would never approve. Not unless he forced them to. And so, he began to plan. The first step was simple—gathering power inside the company. His father respected results more than anything. If Ethan could prove that he was strong enough, smart enough, and independent enough to run the business, then maybe he could finally break free from their control. But he couldn’t do it alone. He needed allies. Quietly, Ethan started reaching out to board members, people who had grown tired of his father’s strict ways. He promised them change, promised them profits. Little by little, he began building a circle of support. Yet even as he worked on his plan, Claire remained at the center of his thoughts. He remembered the way her eyes had burned into him when she said, “Now, you’ll know what it feels like.” It cut deep. But beneath her anger, Ethan had seen something else—hurt. She still carried the wound he gave her. And that gave him hope. If she truly didn’t care, she wouldn’t fight so hard to hurt him back. One evening, Ethan followed her quietly as she left work. He kept his distance, making sure she didn’t notice. When a drunk man staggered too close to her on the street, Ethan stepped in fast, pulling the man away before Claire even realized what was happening. She turned at the sound but only saw the stranger stumble off, cursing. Ethan stayed hidden, his heart heavy. Protecting her from the shadows had become second nature, but it wasn’t enough anymore. He wanted her to see him, to know the truth, but he couldn’t tell her yet. Not while his family still watched every move. The next day, he made a decision. If Claire wanted to fight, then so be it. But he would fight too—not against her, but for her. For them. He would protect her, win her trust back, and break free from his family’s grip. It wouldn’t be easy. She hated him now, and his parents would do everything to keep them apart. But Ethan was no longer the scared boy who walked away years ago. He was ready to play their game, ready to outsmart them, ready to take back what was his. As he closed his office door that night, Ethan whispered to himself, almost like a vow: “This time, I won’t let you go, Claire. Not again.” What he didn’t know was that Claire had already decided her next move too. And when their strategies clashed, love and revenge would meet head-on.
