Chapter Eight – The Strike Outside Work Claire stood by her window, staring at the city lights. The office battles with Ethan weren’t enough. He was too calm, too controlled. Every time she tried to shake him, he stayed standing. That only fueled her anger. If she wanted him to feel her pain, she had to hit where it would hurt more—his life outside work. She knew Ethan was close to his younger sister, Lily. Unlike their parents, Lily was kind, warm, and free. Claire had met her once years ago, back when things were still good, and she remembered how Ethan’s eyes softened whenever he spoke of her. And so, Claire’s plan began with Lily. The next week, she “accidentally” ran into her at a charity event. Claire had made sure she’d be invited—her company had sponsored a table, knowing Lily would be there. “Claire? Is that you?” Lily asked, surprised but smiling. She remembered her well. Claire smiled back, playing the part of the sweet old friend. “It’s been so long, Lily. You’ve grown so much.” They talked, laughed, and by the end of the evening, Lily had invited Claire for coffee. Ethan’s sister didn’t know about the bitterness, the broken past. And Claire had no plan of telling her—not yet. She would use this new friendship carefully. When Ethan heard from Lily that she had met Claire, his heart dropped. He tried to hide his reaction, but Lily noticed the flicker in his eyes. “You still care about her, don’t you?” Lily asked gently. Ethan didn’t answer. He only said, “Be careful with her.” But Lily only laughed. “It’s Claire. She’s lovely. You just don’t want me stealing your old girlfriend as my new best friend.” Ethan said nothing more, but inside he was torn. He knew Claire was up to something. He could feel it. Days turned into weeks, and Claire slowly built her place in Lily’s life. They went shopping together, exchanged messages late at night, even shared secrets. Claire wasn’t cruel to her—she genuinely liked Lily—but she also knew the truth: every moment she spent with Ethan’s sister was a knife twisting in him. The first time Ethan saw them together, sitting in a café, laughing like nothing had ever happened, it nearly broke him. His heart tightened, but he didn’t interfere. He couldn’t. Confronting Claire in front of Lily would only raise suspicion. That night, Ethan lay awake, staring at the ceiling. She was clever. Very clever. If her goal was to torment him, she had found the perfect way. And yet, he couldn’t bring himself to pull Claire away from Lily. Protecting his sister’s happiness mattered more than his own comfort. But Claire wasn’t done. She wanted Ethan to feel what she felt when he abandoned her—helplessness, anger, betrayal. And the closer she got to Lily, the more she saw Ethan’s carefully built walls cracking. Still, something unexpected began to happen. The more time she spent with Lily, the more memories of the past returned—memories of when Ethan had made her laugh, when he had held her hand with the same protective warmth he now gave his sister. It shook her. She didn’t want to remember the good times. She wanted only anger. One evening, as she left Lily’s apartment, Ethan was waiting by his car across the street. He didn’t call her name. He just watched, his eyes full of a pain she almost couldn’t face. For a moment, Claire’s heart softened. But then she reminded herself of the nights she cried alone, of the silence he left her in. She raised her chin, walked past him without a word, and got into her car. Ethan closed his eyes, knowing exactly what she was doing. And he whispered to himself, “If this is the game you want, Claire, I’ll play it. But I won’t lose you again.”
