For five years, I built Julian’s billion-dollar tech company from behind the scenes and planned to marry him. One week before the wedding, he dropped a cheap gray bridesmaid dress on my desk. His supposedly terminal first love would wear my gown and take my place at the altar. Julian expected me to accept it. He had always treated my love and my money as resources he could call on. I looked at the gray fabric, then called the man who controlled my hidden shares. Julian had never bothered to learn what kept his empire standing.

Chapter 1 The Accidental Bridesmaid
“It’s only for the ceremony, Serena. It’s an act of compassion.” Julian sounded the way he did in budget meetings. On the coffee table between us lay the dress he had brought for me, cheap gray fabric folded into a neat square. My bridesmaid dress. “Chloe’s cancer is back,” he continued. “The doctors give her three months, maybe less. Her last wish is to walk down the aisle and feel like a bride before she dies.” I had spent five years turning his half-formed ideas into a billion-dollar company. At home, I had planned our wedding down to the hand-lettered place cards. All of that work had brought me to Julian’s coffee table, where he was replacing me with a square of gray fabric. “You want me to be a bridesmaid at my own wedding.” “We’ll still sign the papers,” he said quickly. “You’ll be my wife legally. The ceremony is for Chloe, one last memory. Think about what we can give a dying woman, Serena.” *We.* He had made my humiliation a joint act of charity. I pressed my palm against my knee until my heartbeat settled. Legally, I could keep the marriage certificate. Chloe would get the gown, the aisle, the photographs, and every memory attached to the day. “And my dress?” I touched the Vera Wang design book on the table. My custom gown had taken six months to make. The page was still marked with the final sketch and the notes from my fittings. “Chloe is a perfect size two, same as you. It’ll fit her beautifully,” he said. “We can’t waste a masterpiece like that.” He had already decided. My answer had never entered into it. That explained the dress waiting on the table. Julian had come home to announce the arrangement, then expected the rest of the evening to proceed normally. Julian took my silence for surrender. His shoulders loosened as he went to the bar and pulled at his tie. “Good. I knew you’d understand. Now, tomorrow’s board meeting. Finish the presentation tonight, please.” He poured himself a drink. “Bernard is anxious about the Q3 projections, and you’re the only one who can make them convincing.” He expected me to hand over the wedding and then polish his numbers. I watched his reflection in the penthouse window. “No,” I said. Julian paused, his hand halfway to a bottle of Macallan. “What?” “Give it to your executive assistant. I’m sure she can manage.” For a second, he simply stared. I had never refused him before. “Don’t be difficult, Serena.” He waved the problem away. “Fine, be upset. We’ll talk after I check on Chloe. She’s waiting downstairs in the car. She was too weak to come up.” He walked out. The lock clicked behind him, and the apartment went quiet. At the window, I watched him open the passenger door of his Tesla. Chloe stepped out into the drizzle, looking frail. He put his coat around her shoulders and held her close. He waited until she was settled before walking her toward the building. In five years, Julian had always treated affection with me as something to schedule after work. Our five years together had been run like a business. I supplied the plans and the capital; he took both for granted. He knew about my strategy work. He had never asked where the first investment came from or why the European fund trusted every deal I brought them. I picked up my phone and found the number I had kept without ever using. The call connected on the first ring. “Alexander. It’s Serena.” “I wondered when you’d call.” His familiar baritone came through the speaker. “Liquidate everything. Terminate the Thorne-Vance Protocol. Sell every hidden share and trigger every exit clause. I want my capital out before the market opens Monday.” Alexander paused long enough to make sure I had finished. He had warned me years ago to keep the exit clauses intact. I had called the precaution cynical and renewed them anyway. “Consider it done,” Alexander said. “Welcome back, Serena.” I set the phone beside the gray dress. Across the glass, Julian was still holding his coat over Chloe.
