Pause life
Daphne stared out the window, her gaze lost in the endless sky. The sounds of her small apartment - Natasha's cooing, the hum of the fridge, Marion's faint humming in the kitchen - blended into the background. At 15, Daphne's life had changed forever. She was a mother now, and her baby girl, Natasha, was the center of her world. Two years had slipped away, lost to diaper changes, sleepless nights, and the endless cycle of care. School was a distant memory, one she'd missed for so long. But this year, she'd decided to go back, to try and reclaim some part of her old life. Repeating Senior Two wasn't ideal, but Daphne didn't mind. She was just grateful to be back, to be around people her age, to learn and grow alongside them. Or at least, that's what she told herself. The truth was, Daphne was struggling. Emotionally, she was a mess. The weight of motherhood, the pressure of school, and the uncertainty of her future hung over her like a constant cloud. Some days, she felt like she was drowning, like she was losing herself in the process. Marion, her older sister, was her rock. She'd taken care of Natasha when Daphne needed to study, cooked meals, and listened to her vent. But even Marion's patience wore thin sometimes. "You need to focus on you, Daphne," she'd say, but it was hard when Natasha needed her so much. Daphne sighed, feeling the familiar knot in her stomach. She was trying, but it was hard to shake the feeling that she was failing, that she'd never be the person she used to be. The door creaked open, and Marion walked in, a warm smile on her face. "Hey, sis. Time for school." Daphne nodded, standing up, and smoothed her hair. Time to put on a brave face, time to pretend like everything was okay. But as she followed Marion out the door, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was just pretending, that her life was paused, waiting for her to catch up. Daphne's feet moved automatically, carrying her to the kitchen where Marion was already preparing breakfast. Natasha giggled in her arms, oblivious to the turmoil brewing inside Daphne. Marion handed her a bowl of cereal and a glass of juice, her expression soft. "Hey, don't look so worried. You're gonna do great today," Marion said, her voice a gentle reassurance. Daphne forced a smile, taking a seat at the small table. She'd always looked up to Marion, and now, she was grateful for her sister's unwavering support. But sometimes, like today, she felt like Marion was trying to fix things that weren't fixable. "I'm just... tired," Daphne said, pushing her cereal around the bowl. Marion nodded, understanding. "I know, sis. But you're doing great. Natasha is happy, you're in school... you're making it work." Daphne wished she could believe her. She took a bite of cereal, the sweetness overwhelming her taste buds. She wasn't hungry, but she ate anyway, knowing she needed the energy. The morning routine played out in a blur – getting Natasha fed, dressed, and dropped off at daycare, then heading to school. Daphne's mind wandered, thoughts swirling like a storm. As they walked into the school gates, Marion squeezed her hand. "I'll pick you up after class, okay? And we'll figure things out for Natasha's birthday party." Daphne nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. Natasha's birthday was coming up, and Daphne had nothing planned. She'd been so caught up in trying to catch up at school... "Hey, Daphne!" A voice pulled her out of her thoughts. Emmason, a friend of Marion's, stood in front of her, a warm smile on his face. "Daphne's back," he said, his eyes cr crling at the corners. Marion's expression turned guarded, and she quickly intervened. "Hey, Emmason. Yeah, Daphne's back in school." The tension was palpable, and Daphne didn't understand why. She smiled awkwardly, feeling like she'd missed something. "Nice to meet you, Daphne," Emmason said, his gaze lingering on hers for a moment. Daphne's heart skipped a beat, and she looked away, feeling a flutter she didn't understand. Marion quickly ushered her away, leaving Daphne wondering what just happened. Daphne glanced at Marion, noticing her sister's tense expression. "What's wrong?" she whispered, trying to keep up with Marion's quick steps. "Nothing," Marion said, her voice tight. "Just... be careful around Emmason, okay?" Daphne raised an eyebrow. "Why? He's a friend of yours, right?" Marion sighed, slowing down. "Yeah, he is. But, Daphne, he's... complicated. Just be careful, okay?" Daphne nodded, though she didn't understand. What was so complicated about Emmason? He seemed nice enough. They reached Daphne's classroom, and Marion gave her a quick hug. "I'll pick you up after class. Love you, sis." Daphne smiled, watching Marion hurry off. She took a deep breath, slipping into the classroom just as the bell rang. The morning dragged on, Daphne's mind wandering back to Emmason. Why had Marion warned her? What was the big deal? As lunch break approached, Daphne headed to the cafeteria, her stomach growling. She grabbed a sandwich and found an empty table outside, enjoying the warm sun on her skin. "Mind if I join you?" Emmason slid into the seat across from her, a hesitant smile on his face. Daphne's heart skipped a beat. "Uh, no, go ahead." Emmason sat down, his eyes cr crling at the corners. "So, how's school been?" Daphne shrugged, feeling a little awkward. "It's been... okay, I guess." Emmason chuckled. "Just okay? That's a start, I suppose." They chatted for a bit, Daphne finding herself relax into the conversation. Emmason was easy to talk to, and he listened like he actually cared. But as the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Marion appeared, her expression stormy. "Daphne, we need to talk." Daphne's heart sank. What was wrong now?
