ALMIRA
Aquil placed Avery back into my arms instead of answering my panicked question.
"I know you don't trust me. And you have every right not to." He muttered, looking at me intently as if I would disappear if he does as much as blinking.
I swallowed heavily, already not not liking where this was going.
"But please trust me on this one," His hand rested briefly on Avery's back, patting his son before looking at me again. "Stay here with Avery. And don't come out until I return, okay?”
Another alarm blared, making Avery clung to me, also startled by the loud sound.
I managed a nod. I don't think I'd want to be outside with a possible chaos outside, either.
Aquil kissed the top of Avery's head before his gaze lingered on me.
"I'll be back in no time.” he promised before turning back and rushing out of the door, shutting it after one last look.
The room fell into complete silence. The alarms blared louder for a few seconds before it quieted again.
Avery didn't seem nearly as frightened as I was, more on surprise with the loud noise and curiosity to what was happening outside.
"Mama?"
I looked down at him, still questioning the situation. I still couldn't bring myself to accept that I had a son with Aquil, but the warmth on Avery's eyes is making my heart melt.
I slowly put him down on the bed and he politely stayed, still looking at me as if waiting for my explanation.
"Avery...” I called, still trying my best to get used to a boy calling me his mother.
Whatever this was, he was just a child and he wasn't at fault. I had to constantly remind myself.
The alarms blared once again, making Avery cover his ears. His eyes continued to shift from normal to his wolf's eyes, unable to control his heightened senses yet.
I held him, trying to get his attention so he wouldn't be overwhelmed.
"It's okay," I whispered more to myself than to him. "I'll keep you safe."
He slowly calmed down with my words. I remained close enough that I could grab him if he suddenly decided to run while I continued looking at the windows, anxious at what was happening.
"What should we do..." I murmured to myself.
Avery raised his hand enthusiastically.
"Story!"
"A story?" I repeated.
He nodded, "Mama, story."
"I... don't know any stories."
His little pout immediately appeared.
"No?"
There was pure confusion in his eyes. Have I always told him stories?
"I'm sorry."
Before I could think of something else to distract him, a loud crash was heard outside.
My body tensed, instinctively pulling Avery close to me.
Another crash followed, and I fought the urge to cower. It sounded closer. The pack house is breached.
Avery frowned. "Dada?"
"I..." I trailed off. My mind was already spiraling with so much happening at once.
I didn't even know why Aquil entrusted me the child when he perfectly knew I wouldn't be able to protect him if danger comes.
The doorknob suddenly twisted, opening the door cautiously.
Avery instinctively scooted closer to me and started growling. That couldn't be a good sign.
The door creaked open and an unknown werewolf stepped inside. His clothes were stained with fresh blood, though I couldn't tell whether it belonged to him or someone else.
He looked around intently before his gaze landed on me.
He grinned, making my stomach churn unpleasantly.
"So..." His eyes slowly swept over the room. "I was wondering where the Guardian Wolf had disappeared to."
Guardian Wolf?
He chuckled mockingly, "I didn't expect to find you hiding in your room."
I stepped in front of Avery though I didn't know what to do in case this man attacks us. He grabbed the back of my dress while the stranger kept looking at us with amusement.
"What? Don't tell me motherhood made you soft?"
He clicked his tongue when I didn't respond. "Well, that's disappointing."
My hands formed into fists. He's talking to me like I knew him and addressed me as the guardian wolf.
I have no idea what was that at all!
“Wh-who are you?" I managed to ask.
The man immediately looked offended with my question.
"You've forgotten me already? Or are you pretending because you're too embarrassed to admit the mighty Guardian Wolf is hiding while everyone else fights outside?"
Every word left me more confused.
I was expected to fight? Is he mistaking me for someone else?
Before I could try to talk out of the situation, he suddenly lunged towards us.
Everything happened in an instant. His claws were aimed at me, and I knew I would die if I just let him.
My body moved on its own. I moved towards him, not letting him near Avery and twisted sideways to dodge his attack.
Before my mind caught up, my right leg already swung upward and it connected straight to his chest.
The impact alone made my eyes widened. The man flew backward, crashing straight through the bedroom door.
My surprise only grew when the door ripped completely off its hinges before the stranger slammed into the wall of the corridor with a loud thud.
I flinched in pure surprise at what I did. My eyes scanned at the damage I caused. The man was knocked out by a single attack, and the door already outside with him.
“What?”
I did that? How in the world?
My connection with my wolf has always been weak, making me closer to a human than of a werewolf. I can't even stay in my wolf form for long during every full moon. But somehow, I just managed to send a werewolf twice my size flying through a solid wooden door.
I looked down at my hands. They were shaking, but not from exhaustion but thrill I've never felt in my life.
"Cool!"
I turned to Avery. He was already standing on the bed, cheering for me.
“Mama, cool!” he exclaimed, now bouncing on the bed, “You do boom!"
He even tried to copy the kick I did purely out of instincts and ended up slipping and landing on his behind but still laughed and cheered.
I could only stare at him in pure disbelief.
What kind of person had I become during the five years I couldn't remember?
