When Maya opened her eyes she found herself in a hospital bed. She squinted her eyes at the bright lights, and looked around.
“Oh good you are awake.”
To Maya’s surprise, it was her mother. Her voice was laced with what sounded suspiciously like worry. Maya looked at her blankly.
“How did you come here?”
“Josephine called me. They needed a parent or a guardian to sign some papers.”
“Sign what papers?”
“Maya, they wanted to make sure you were not ra***. And you have some broken ribs too.”
“I was only in the meadow, reading my book, mom.”
She was worried she would assume Maya was out partying or hanging out with boys, which led to this.
“I know Maya. I already know everything.”
