That evening,Adian stood in front of the mirror adjusting her elegant black dress Ethan got her. “You look perfect”. Ethan admired her. He stood at the doorway, his eyes fixed on her watching her quietly. “Perfect isn't the word I would have used”. She said softly. “It's accurate”. He replied smiling. Adian smiled back. “What is the event for?” She asked. “A business gala”. “And am going because…….”? She said, raising her eyebrows. Then turned to face him. “Because you're my wife”. The answer was simple but it made her pause. “Alright”. She said as she took a deep breath. The gala was everything Adian had expected and more importantly it was luxurious, powerful and highly influential. The room was filled with people who shaped industries, controlled markets and dictate trends. As they stepped in all eyes were on them. They are the main focus tonight. “Is that her?. Ethan Blackwood wife?. The one from the scandal? She looks different!. Adian could hear all the whispers but this time she doesn't care because it didn't break her anymore instead it energized her. Ethan's hand rested lightly on her waist as they walked through the crowd. It is a silent reminder that she wasn't alone. Then David Carter too had arrived. The whispers grew louder but they were not admiring instead it was gossiping. People were curious and judging. David walked in with forced confidence, his posture rigid, his expression controlled but the moment he saw Adian everything cracked. She stood there confident, radiant beside Ethan. “That's impossible…. He whispers under his breath and it makes his chest tightened. Adian saw him too. Their eyes met for a moment. They both froze but this time she didn't feel pain. She felt power. Ethan leaned closer and whispered. “Show time”. Adian nodded. Together they walked. They walked towards David. Every step was deliberate, every movement calculated. David straightened, forcing a smile. “Adian…… I didn't expect to see you here”. “Really?. Yes I did”. She replied calmly. Then his gaze shifted to Ethan. “Mr Blackwood”. “Mr Carter”. Ethan didn't smile. The tension between them was sharp, unforgiving. “I see you have been busy”. David said. His tone was slightly mixed with accusation. “Business is always busy”. Ethan replied. “Funny. Because ever since you got involved, mine hasn't been”. David said his jaw tightened. Adian watched in silence because this wasn't just about revenge anymore, this was war. Ethan stepped closer. “Then perhaps, you should reconsider how you handle your affairs”. He said quietly. David's eyes darkened. “You think this is over”?. “No. This is just the beginning”. Ethan replied, his lips curved slightly. Adian felt a shiver run down her spine. She wasn't afraid but anticipation because she knew David Carter had not seen anything yet. As the night continued. The balance of power shifted completely and for the first time. Adian wasn't the one falling but she was the one raising. Even after the gala ended, the tension was there and it followed them home. It lingered in the air between them even though they never spoke about it…like something dangerous. The car ride back to the mansion was dead silent. Too quiet. Adian sat beside Ethan but her minds were somewhere else, her gaze was fixed in the city lights flashing past the window, she saw her reflection staring back at her composed, elegant and confident she saw a woman who was not yet used to this kind of life style yet but beneath that calm exterior, her thoughts were anything but steady. Tonight was different, really different not just in the world around her but between them. She could still feel it. The way he looked at her, the way his hand rested on her waist, the way he stood beside her like nothing could touch her, the way he looked at David….like he would burn the world down if he had to. “For someone who handled tonight we'll, you have been quiet”. Ethan said to her, bringing her back from her own thoughts. “You have said that before”. She smiled faintly. “And it was true then, too”. This time, she fully turned to him, giving him all the attention now. “Does everything have to be a calculation with you”?. She asked. “Yes”. Ethan said firmly, his gaze unreadable and steady. “No exceptions”. “No”. Adian studied him more. “You didn't look very calculated tonight”. She said quietly. Ethan paused. “You were…. angry”. Ethan didn't respond immediately, he was silent for a few seconds. “I don't like people challenging what belongs to me”. Adian exhaled softly, those words again. She turned her gaze back to the window. “I am not something you own”. She said calmly. “I know”. Ethan's voice was calm too. “Do you”?. “Yes”. Adian frowned. “Then why do you keep saying it like that”? She asked, her voice steady. Ethan was silent, this time he leaned back in his seat, he was deep in thoughts for the first time. “Because….. it's easier that way”. Adian raised an eyebrow, confused. “Easier “?. “To keep things clear, defined, controlled”. He explained, his voice low. “And if they are not”?. She asked, letting out a quick quiet breath. Ethan didn't respond. When they arrived at the mansion, the staff had already retired. The house felt quieter than usual, almost…. intimate and the stillness of the night wrapped around them. Adian stepped forward, slipping off her heels as she walked barefooted towards the living room, her feet ached but she didn't care because it wasn't the physical exhaustion that weighed on her. It was everything else. Ethan was right behind her, loosening his tie and unbuttoning his sleeves too as he walked. “Sit”. He said. “ Was that an order”? She asked as she turned towards him. “It was a suggestion”. She looked at him, then she said anyway. He disappeared briefly, returning with a glass of water. “Drink”. He said, handling it to her. Adian paused for a second before taking it from him. “Thank you”. She said softly. Ethan nodded once. There was a long silence between them again but this time the silence was different, it felt heavier, more personal. “You didn't have to do all that tonight”. She said suddenly. Ethan looked at her for a moment. “I know”. “But you did”. “Yes”. Adian held her grip on the glass tightly.
