The peace didn't last long,Adian should have known it wouldn't.
Men like David Carter don't back down gracefully; they weaponize and gather more armour and when they are they couldn't destroy the person standing above then they targeted the one lower.
The morning was quiet,too quiet.
Sunlight filtered through the massive windows of the Blackwood mansion, beaming the dining room in soft gold
Adian sat alone at the long table, slowly stirring her coffee while scrolling through her emails on her phone and for the first time things felt….calm, stable and dangerously stable.
Ethan had already left for work before she woke up,after receiving an urgent call from overseas investors.
Adian had barely seen him leave and the memory of his quiet kiss against her forehead before walking out still lingered in her mind. The gesture was kind and sweet and it shocked both of them, it had been unplanned and instinctive neither of them mentioned it afterwards.
Adian touched her forehead unconsciously, her cheek warming slightly at the memory.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated. It was a call from an unknown number. She wanted to ignore it but she gave it a second thought and this made her uneasy. Slowly, she picked and answered.
“Hello…… you really think you have won?
There was silence.
Adian froze instantly.
“David…”
Her chest tightened, she could feel her blood pumping through her veins.
“What do you want?”. She asked coldly.
David laughed softly, but there was no humor in his voice.
“You know, I used to wonder what Ethan saw in you”. He said.
Adian stood up slowly.
“Tell me why you called, stop wasting my time”. She snapped.
“That's cute I like that, you sound confident now”.
“I am….. and always am”.
There was another laugh.
“Careful Adian, confidence disappears quickly”.
A cold chill ran down her spine.
“What does that mean”?
“It means you should check the news”. David said softly.
Then the line went dead.
Adian’s heart began pounding immediately, her breathing almost seized.
She knew something was wrong, very wrong. She slowly opened her social media with trembling hands and what she saw froze her. Her face was drained of color. It was headline after headline flooding her screen.
“Mrs Blackwood’s secret past exposed”
“Adian Victory accused of cheating on former fiance before wedding”.
“Leaked photos suggest affairs before marriage”.
“No…. Adian grasped!
Her fingers shook as she opened the articles, a series of photos filled her screen, blurred images of her entering with Ethan the night before the wedding, time stamps, fake narratives and manipulated stories.
According to the media, Adian had been having a secret affair with Ethan before her wedding and abandoned David for a richer man. She almost fainted, her stomach twisted violently.
“ David had done this”!. He had manipulated the story, completely again.
By noon the internet was on fire, the comment section exploded with lots of criticism.
“Ooh she cheated first”
“Poor David”
“So she married a billionaire for money”.
“I knew it, she looked fake”.
Adian sat frozen in the living room. She was completely still, unable to breathe properly. The humiliation hit harder this time not because she cared about strangers but because the lies were endlessly everywhere and worst of all relentlessly. She is scared that Ethan may believe it also and that makes her chest tightened before she could stop herself. She grabbed her keys, she needed fresh air, her chest was painfully tightened. She needed space to escape the suffocation pressure building inside her.
She wasn't aware of the black car following her at first, the streets were crowded, noisy and filled with the normal chaos of the city.
Adian drove aimlessly trying to calm the storm in her head but before the third turn. The car was still there, she gripped on the steering wheel tightly. She had a bad feeling and she sped up slightly, the car behind her did the same and this made her heartbeat rise. She was frightened. Her breathing became uneven, then she reached for her phone with no signal.
“What the hell…..”. She panicked.
Suddenly the black car accelerated fast, too fast and slammed into her vehicle from behind . Adian screamed, as the impact pushed her violently forward. Her car swerved, tires screeched then there was another hit harder this time and this made her more terrified because obviously they weren't trying to scare her they were trying to hurt her.
“Argh…..!
The steering wheel jerked from her hands as the car spun sharply towards the side of the road, everything blurred, the noises, the glass, the pains and then darkness.
Ethan Blackwood was in the middle of a meeting when his phone rang, his assistant picked up and answered immediately she dropped her expression and she looked sad after receiving the incoming call.
“Sir….”?!
Ethan looked up immediately.
“What?!
“Mrs Blackwood has been in an accident”. The assistant said, swallowing hard.
There was complete silence and it seemed the room temperature dropped too. Every person at the table froze as Ethan stood slowly.
“What did you say”?! He asked, confused.
“Her car was forced off the road twenty minutes ago. She has been taken to St Theresa hospital now”. His assistant’s voice trembled slightly.
For the first time in years, Ethan Blackwood never lost control but unfortunately the glass he was holding dropped against the floor and shattered.
The hospital corridors smelled like antiseptic mixed with fear. As Ethan walked through them he was terrifically calm. The kind of calm that comes right after destruction.
Doctors and Nurses moved aside instinctively when they saw him coming in. His expression alone was enough to silence the entire room.
“Where is she”?
“She is still unconscious. Minor injuries, cuts ,bruises, mild concussion but fortunately the air bags deployed in time” . The doctor explained carefully.
Fortunately the word meant nothing to Ethan right now.
“What happened “?
“We believe another vehicle intentionally jammed hers”.
Ethan was obviously furious now, his jaw tightened dangerously.
“Was the other driver identified”?.
“Not yet”.
Ethan already knew who it was, David.
