The arrangement(Episode 1)
7:50.. The alarm rang, waking up Chidi, who lazily rolled on her bed. The sun pierced her eyes through the curtains, she sluggishly rose and made for the bathroom.
'It is barely seven in the morning and this sun is already out,' she hissed.
Her phone rang, she hurried out of the bathroom with a tooth-brush in her hand, she picked the call.
'Hey girl.. where are you?' Came the voice from the other line.
'At home of course, I'm preparing for work,' She yawned.
'Are you just waking up?' Asked the Lady on the line, almost yelling.
'Yes..'
'Seriously..? Have you seen the time?!'
'Yes, its barely seve..' Her eyes hit the clock on the desk beside her bed.
'What? Is that really the time?'
'It's past eight! you better get your a*s down here, you know how Sonia can get when she's angry,'
'Oh my God!! Please try to cover for me, ok?'.
'I'll try, but you know how she can be, so hurry up!' She hung up.
Hurrying to the bathroom to get ready she slipped and fell, she felt a sharp pain on her ankle, She tried to stand, grabbing the bathroom door as support, walking into the bathroom, she realized her ankle was fractured,
'Oh.. help me God!' She hissed as she keeps into the bathroom.
8:33.. Chidi had boarded a taxi and headed to her place of work, she felt restless, she kept staring at her wrist watch and urging the driver to go faster.
Thirty minutes into the journey, she felt the car's speed reducing, and suddenly they hit a stop.
'What is happening? Why did we stop?' She asked the driver.
'Madam.. E be like say na the fuel finish so oo,' The driver answered getting down to check the fuel-tank.
'Seriously?' She asked in anger as she came down.'What type if driver are you? How can you drive a car without checking the fuel first?' She looked around, there was no filling station closeby or another taxi around.
'No vex madam,' the driver apologized.
'I bin fill am yesterday night, so I come think say e still remain this morning..,' not even listening to the explanation given by the young man, Chidi dipped her hand in her bag, paid the man and angrily left, still leaping.
She walked, having decided to trek the remaining distance to work. She cursed the day for all it had put her through.
Admist her thought she felt some liquid splash on her, She looked down to find her blue gown covered in mud.
Raising her head, She found the cause of her mud-bath, a Toyota Venza, speeding off, She boiled with rage.
'Hey!!' She called after the driver, filled with anger she picked a stone and sent after the car.
The car hit a stop, the driver who must have heard something hit his car came down to examine the cause of the noise, he was shocked to find one of windows his broken, He didn't have to look far to find the perpetrator as Chidi had not made any move to run or even hide.
She just stood there, boiling with rage.
'Are you mad?' The angry driver asked walking up to her, She was silent.
'Are you deaf or what?'
'No.. I'm not deaf,' She began.
'It's you that is blind!'
'What?!' The man was taken aback.
'Can't you see what you did to me? Huh!' She continued.
'You should be thankful I only broke your window, useless man', She made to leave, He held Her back as she struggled to free herself from is grip.
'You think this is a joke? You think you can just destroy anyone's car and go scout free?' She forced herself free.
'And what will you do? Eeh..? You think you can splash mud on just anyone and go scout free? You destroyed my dress!'
'You meant your cheap dress?' The man mocked.
'Do you know how much that window costs? That window can buy your wardrobe full of cheap clothes!'
'What? Did you just..' She couldn't believe her ears, rich people and their arrogance.
'How dare you!' She boiled with rage.
'How dare you open your mouth and talk such rubbish, you're a very big fool! just because you own a car, you think you can intimidate anyone you see?' A small crowd was beginning to form around them.
'I don't need to intimidate you, you're already..' His phone rang.
'Hello..
I can't make it today, I have some urgent matters I need to attend to,
Okay then'. He ended the call.
'You broke my window, so guess what.. You are paying or else..' His phone rang again.
'Yes?!' He was angry at the caller.
'Ooh.. Sorry Sir, Right now? Ok sir! I'm on my way', came his response and he ended the call.
'Thank your stars,' He said pocketing his phone.
'This isn't over, just pray I don't get to see you again',
'And what will you do? Huh? Nothing! You'll do nothing! Rubbish!'
'Go look for someone else to pour your frustration on, I've got places to be', He said entering his car
'Frustration? I'm frustrated? You haven't seen frustration yet, Foolish man!' He reversed his car, and drove off.
'Bastard!' She cussed.
9:40.. Chidi arrived at her place of work, now in a new dress, she paid the taxi man and ran into the building.
'Good morning Ma', The receptionist greeted her.
'Good morning Ada', She rested herself on the receptionist's desk catching her breath.
'Are you okay Ma?' The girl asked concerned.
'Oh.. I'm fine.. Do you have any idea if Sonia is around?'
'Yes Ma, She walked in about ten minutes ago, but She was quite upset,'
'Is there ever a time she isn't upset?', They both laughed.
'I better get going, before I get caught, See you later dear', She left.
'Awwn.., I'm so sorry, these rich people and their arrogance.. It's so upsetting!' Debbie sympathized with Chidi after hearing her story.
'Tell me about it.. You should have seen this guy, So.. rude. I actually felt like tearing him into bits, God..!' She sighed.
'Well that's in the past now,' Debbie adjusted herself on her seat.
'So tell me, what happened last night?' she winked at Chidi.
'Nothing much,'
'Nothing much? You're late on a Monday morning and you say nothing much?'
'Okay.. So you know, I went to the club with James, we left around twelve midnight or something, I had to go back to my apartment cause James said he had to meet up with an important client this morning. That's what happened last night.'
'Why couldn't you two just go over at his place and spend the night there?'
'Please Dee don't go there, you know how he can be when it comes to his work, and I understand him', Debbie rolled her eyes.
'Seriously? Mrs Understander,' They both laughed.
'Please leave me alone joor',
'So what's up with you two, Have you told him about wanting to meet his family?' Debbie threw her a curious glance.
'Well.. I haven't', Debbie rolled her eyes in disappointment.
'Don't do that, Stop doing that', Chidi pleaded as her friend kept rolling her eyes and shaking her head at once.
'I know I was supposed to talk to him about but I just..' She sighed.
'You've been dating this guy for almost two years now and you haven't met any of his family member, even though they live in this same state? Not even his siblings! How do you explain that? eeh..'
'I know what you mean, But I understand him, and I do speak to his sisters on the phone when he calls them, So its not like I don't know them or anything',
Really? Like seriously? You speak to them on the phone? For God's sake they live in this same Lagos! Why can't you just meet them, Do you even have their numbers or he has to call them before you speak to them?'
'Debbie please.. Is all these even necessary, Its him that I'm dating not his entire family'.
'But that's..' Chidi cut her short.
'Please Debbie, I don't want to ruin a Monday morning with a bad vibe. And ooh I forgot to tell you..' She smiled sheepishly.
'You forgot to tell me what?'
'Guess..'
'I should guess? ooh please just go on and tell me'.
'Guess na'.
'Ok, let me try. Hnmm..', She thought for awhile.
'Your mom has gotten better?',
'Well.. No but that would be a great news though'.
'So what's it that making you so happy, huh?'.
'So the thing is James might be proposing soon',
'That's it?' Debbie looked disappointed.
'Yes.. Is that not good news?'.
'It is, but how can you be even sure?'.
'I found a box containing a ring in his wardrobe, it was so beautiful', She smiled placing her left hand on her chest then sticking out in front of her as she imagined the ring on her finger, Debbie watched.
'How sure are you that the ring was meant for you?' Chidi threw her and angry look.
'Are you seriously insinuating that James is cheating on me?', She was visibly angry.
'I never said that, I just said..' Chidi cut her short.
'You know what? I better head to my office before you spoil my mood'.
'I didn't mean it that way!', Debbie explained.
