Capturing the oilfields by force was an extremely complicated military exercise. A normal campaign is typically based on one, two or sometimes three prongs of attack, making sure that lines of communication and supply keep up with the speed of the advance. The situation here was completely different; the logistical exercise of attempting to take so many locations simultaneously was unprecedented in modern warfare. As if the level of difficulty were not already sufficient, the Generals and Admirals also had to take into account that many of the oil rigs were at sea. Beyond that, there was the potential hostility of the Arab nations themselves to consider.
