Chapter 4: The Conflict

1457 Words
The academy changed after that night. Not in obvious ways. The halls were still the same—old stone floors, floating lanterns, and whispering walls—but something beneath it all had shifted. Ariana could feel it every time she stepped inside St. Liora Academy. Like the air was holding its breath. Waiting. For something to happen. And worse… she was no longer just an observer of it. She was part of it now. 🌫️ Rumors Begin to Spread It started small. Whispers in corridors. Glances that lingered too long. Then came the words. “She’s the one he’s been seen with…” “They say she touched the shadow relic…” “She didn’t faint… how is that possible?” Ariana heard it everywhere. At first, she ignored it. Then it became impossible to ignore. She stopped walking when she heard her name again. Two students standing near the lockers immediately went silent when she passed. Ariana turned sharply. “If you’re going to talk about me, at least say it louder so I can hear properly.” The girls stiffened. One of them quickly shook her head. “We weren’t saying anything bad!” Ariana raised an eyebrow. “That’s usually what people say right before saying something bad.” Silence. Then one of them spoke quietly: “It’s just… people are saying you’re involved with Kael Draven.” Ariana blinked once. “…Involved?” The girl nodded nervously. “Like… personally.” Ariana stared at them. Then laughed once. Short. Unbelieving. “You mean the guy who acts like I’m a disturbance in his existence?” The girls didn’t laugh. That’s when Ariana realized they weren’t joking. ⚡ Kael Draven Becomes a Problem By midday, the rumors had evolved. Now it wasn’t just “she’s seen with him.” It was worse. “She’s manipulating him.” “She’s trying to control the Shadow Bearer.” “She’s dangerous.” Ariana stood in the middle of the hallway, gripping her bag tightly. “This is ridiculous,” she muttered. “I’ve barely spoken to the guy normally.” But the stares didn’t stop. And neither did the distance people suddenly created around her. Like she had become untouchable. Or contaminated. 🌑 The First Confrontation She found Kael in the courtyard. Of course she did. He was always where silence was thickest. Standing beneath the large black tree at the center of the academy grounds. Its branches never moved with the wind. Only with him nearby. Ariana walked straight up to him. “No,” she said immediately. Kael didn’t turn. “…No what?” he asked calmly. “No whatever this is,” she said. “Whatever rumor factory you’ve accidentally created around me.” Now he turned. Slowly. Expression unreadable. “You think I control what people say?” Ariana crossed her arms. “I think people fear you enough to make up stories that include me now.” Silence. Kael studied her for a moment. Then: “You’re being watched because you stood beside me.” Ariana frowned. “I didn’t ask for that.” “I know,” he said. That made her pause. The way he said it wasn’t dismissive. It wasn’t cold. It was… factual. Almost like he accepted responsibility for it. That irritated her more than she expected. “So what? I just accept being treated like a criminal now?” Kael’s gaze lowered slightly. “No.” A beat. “…You stay away from me.” The words landed heavier than they should have. Ariana stared at him. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then she scoffed. “Oh. So now you care about protecting me?” Kael didn’t respond immediately. But something in his expression tightened. “I care about balance,” he said finally. Ariana took a step closer. “Then explain why I keep ending up in the center of your ‘balance.’” Silence. Longer this time. And for the first time, Kael looked away first. 🌫️ The Shift That evening, everything escalated. Ariana was called to the disciplinary hall. She walked in alone. Three teachers stood at the front. And behind them… students she recognized. Watching. Judging. “Ariana Vale,” one of the teachers began, “there are concerns regarding your influence over Kael Draven.” Ariana blinked. “My influence over who?” Murmurs filled the room. The teacher continued, “Your repeated interactions with him have caused unrest among students and triggered instability in the academy’s environment.” Ariana stared at them. Then slowly said: “Are you blaming me for talking to someone?” A pause. Another teacher spoke. “Kael Draven is not an ordinary student. His condition requires controlled isolation. Any external influence—” Ariana cut in immediately. “External influence? I literally bumped into him twice and got assigned a project.” The room went silent. Then a new voice interrupted. Cold. Familiar. “You misunderstand.” Ariana turned. Kael stood at the entrance. Unannounced. Unmoving. The air changed instantly. The teachers stiffened slightly. Kael walked forward slowly. “You are not punishing her for influence,” he said calmly. “You are afraid of proximity.” Silence. Ariana looked at him. “You didn’t have to come here,” she said quietly. Kael didn’t look at her. “I did.” That was all he said. But it changed everything. ⚔️ The Breaking Point Outside the hall, the confrontation continued. Ariana stepped closer to Kael as the teachers retreated inside. “You just made it worse,” she said. Kael finally looked at her. “Worse than what?” “Than whatever they already think!” A pause. Then Kael said quietly: “They were going to isolate you.” Ariana froze. “…What?” “They’ve done it before,” he added. Her expression changed. “Before?” Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. “People who get close to me are removed from normal interaction.” Ariana shook her head. “That’s insane.” “It’s policy,” he said. Silence. Ariana stared at him. Then laughed—but there was no humor in it. “So what now? I just disappear from your life so everyone else feels safe?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. But his silence was loud enough. Ariana stepped back slightly. “Oh,” she said softly. “So that’s it.” Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly. “That’s not—” But she interrupted him. “No, I get it now.” Her voice dropped. “You’re not avoiding me because you hate me.” A pause. “You’re avoiding me because you think I’ll get hurt.” Silence. Kael didn’t respond. And that silence confirmed it. 🌘 Emotional Collapse Something inside Ariana shifted. Not breaking. But cracking. “You don’t get to decide that for me,” she said quietly. Kael finally spoke. “You don’t understand what I am.” Ariana stepped closer again. “Then explain it.” Kael hesitated. That hesitation was rare. Uncomfortable. Real. And it scared her more than anything he had ever done. Then he said: “I am not stable.” Ariana frowned. “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one you need.” Silence. The wind moved around them, but avoided touching Kael completely. Ariana looked at him for a long moment. Then said: “You’re lying to yourself more than you’re lying to me.” Kael’s eyes darkened slightly. For the first time, something cracked in his control. “You shouldn’t say things like that.” Ariana didn’t move. “Why? Because it’s true?” The shadows around him stirred violently for a split second. Then stopped. He exhaled slowly. “…Leave it.” But she didn’t. Instead, she stepped closer again. And softly said: “I don’t scare easily, Kael.” That made him go completely still. 🌌 The Rumor Becomes Reality That night, everything broke. Ariana returned to her dorm to find something waiting. A sealed letter. No name. Only a warning: “If you continue with Kael Draven, you will lose your place here.” Her hands tightened. “So now it’s threats,” she whispered. She looked out the window. And saw him again. Standing in the distance. Watching. Even from far away, she could feel it. Something inside him was struggling. Not with power. With control. And for the first time… The shadows around Kael didn’t feel like protection. They felt like a cage. Ariana pressed her hand against the window. “I’m not leaving,” she said softly. Below, Kael tilted his head slightly as if he heard her. Then— He turned away. And disappeared into the darkness.
