Forced Out
“What?" Raine’s voice echoed through the living room. “You heard me,” her step-sister Lily repeated from the shadowed corner, stepping forward with a cruel smile curling at the edges of her lips. “It’s time to pack your things and get out of my husband’s house!” Raine’s breath hitched, her eyes darting toward Daniel. He didn’t even look up. Instead, he pressed his lips to Lily’s neck, his hands roaming possessively as if she already belonged to him. “But I’m the one married to him,” Raine’s voice trembled, disbelief cutting through her like ice. Lily’s grin widened, a playful smirk tugging on her lips. “Yes, you are married to him.” Her voice dropped, slow and deliberate. “But if you thought this marriage would last, you were a fool.” Memories crashed in Raine’s mind, five years ago, her adoptive parents were in so much debts. Their only solution to pay off the debts was with marriage. She recalled the sting of Daniel’s rejection when he first asked Lily to marry him instead, but because he wasn't wealthy then, lily refused. Now, five years later, Daniel and Raine had built a life together, a marriage, a two year-old child, and yet here was Lily, striding back into their lives like she was already meant to be here? Raine’s chest tightened, she couldn't help but be suspicious. Had Lily discovered Daniel wasn't as poor as she thought? Or worse, that he loved her? She know right from time that Daniel never looked at her the way he looked at Lily. Hell, he never properly made love to her. “You’re not listening,” Lily snapped, her tone icy and final. “I’m giving you five minutes. Five good minutes to pack your things and leave my house.” “You can't do this, Lily,” Raine pleaded, reaching out to Daniel, desperation evident in her voice. “Daniel, you have to say something.” He shrugged, as if he was expecting this to happen. “Listen to your sister,” he said flatly, his eyes not meeting Raine’s. “She’s right, you should leave.” Lily leaned in, her voice low and dangerous. “He never loved you. How did you expect him to love an obese girl like you?” Raine’s chest tightened as Lily’s words hung heavy in the air. A pang of sadness washed over her, but deep down, she knew it wasn’t true. Yes, her curves were soft, her hips wide, her breasts full, yet none of it was a sign of being obese. She wasn’t fat. She was her, and that was enough. Lily stepped closer, a malicious smile creeping across her face. “If you don’t want me to help you leave,” she said with cold amusement, “then maybe I should help you unpack your things.” Without waiting for a reply, Lily stormed upstairs, her footsteps pounding against the wooden floor like as she walked. Raine’s heart pounded in her chest as she hurried after her, the weight of humiliation pressing down on her every step. When they reached the bedroom, Lily began grabbing Raine’s bags and tossing them out into the hallway without a care. “Leave it! Leave it, I’ll do it myself,” Raine snapped, frustration engulfing her. But her words fell on deaf ears. Lily was relentless, and Raine was too drained to argue. Tired and defeated, Raine sank onto the bed and quietly began folding her clothes, bhet hands shaking with each move. She packed only a few essentials, simple outfits, nothing extravagant. Her fingers lingered over the jewelries Daniel had bought her, flashy pieces meant to impress, not to cherish. She left them behind. Her adoptive parents had never treated her the same as Lily. Raine had been smarter, always excelling in school, and it drove them to frustration. She had been the one to bring home the best grades, the one with the biggest dreams. But that had always felt like a burden to them. She remembered the night they sat her down, their faces tight with displeasure. Her mother’s voice was sharp and laced with anger. “You’re always trying to be better than Lily,” her mother had said. “You think you're smarter than her, don’t you? It doesn’t matter how well you do in school, Raine. You need to understand that this isn’t your world.” And that had been the moment it all shifted. Raine’s future had been quietly shut down. Her parents had stopped supporting her education, pushing her instead toward a future they thought more fitting, a future as a wife and mother, one where she was expected to stay out of the spotlight, just like Lily. Lily, of course, had always been the perfect daughter, obedient, quiet, and never a challenge. She could do no wrong in their eyes, while Raine was a constant source of disappointment. Raine shook off the memory, clenching her fists tightly. A lump formed in her throat as she made her way to her daughter’s room. In the crib, Stephanie slept peacefully. She would never let her daughter experience the same cruelty she experienced. Raine knelt down and gently brushed a stray lock of hair from Stephanie’s forehead, planting a tender kiss on her soft skin. Her heart ached for the innocence that needed protecting. Quickly, she moved to Stephanie’s wardrobe and began packing everything her daughter might need, clothes, blankets, a few favorite toys, all shoved carefully into a single box. Raine grabbed her purse and checked inside. There was some cash at least it was enough to survive for a few days. She scooped Stephanie gently into her arms, cradling her close. “Hello, princess,” she whispered softly, brushing Stephanie’s cheek with her lips. Stephanie blinked sleepily and murmured, “Where are we going, Mommy?” Raine smiled through the tears threatening to spill. “Don’t worry, baby. We’re going somewhere where you won’t feel lonely anymore.” With a deep breath, she grabbed her bag and headed downstairs, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. As she reached the bottom step, Daniel’s voice cut sharply through the silence. “Where are you taking my daughter?” Raine froze, panic twisting in her stomach. “This is my daughter,” she said firmly, trying to steady her voice. “I can take her wherever I want.” Lily scoffed. “Babe, just let her go. Take your worthless daughter and leave.” She sneered, giving Raine a death glare. “She can’t even give you a son.” “But don’t worry,” Lily added, her eyes flickering. “I’m going to give you a son.” Daniel’s expression darkened. “You’ll get your divorce papers soon enough,” he warned coldly. “And then I'll be taking custody of our daughter.”
