Maya and Kuroba spent the rest of the day reviewing the evidence and interviewing witnesses. They discovered that Yumi Nakamura had been acting strangely in the days leading up to her murder, receiving mysterious phone calls and messages that had left her shaken.
As the sun began to set, Maya and Kuroba decided to pay a visit to Yumi's family. They arrived at the Nakamura residence, a small apartment in a quiet neighborhood, and were greeted by Yumi's distraught parents.
Maya's eyes locked onto Yumi's mother, who was clutching a framed photograph of her daughter. "I'm so sorry for your loss," Maya said, her voice soft. "Can you tell me more about Yumi's last days?"
Yumi's mother hesitated, then began to speak in a trembling voice. "Yumi was acting strange, receiving mysterious messages and phone calls. She was scared, but she wouldn't tell us what was wrong."
Maya's eyes narrowed. "Did she mention anything about a person or a group?"
Yumi's mother shook her head. "No, nothing. But she did mention something about a 'shadow' that was following her."
Maya's heart skipped a beat. The same word that had been used in the cryptic messages.
As they left the Nakamura residence, Maya turned to Kuroba. "I think we're dealing with a highly organized and calculating killer. Someone who is using fear and intimidation to control their victims."
Kuroba nodded. "I agree. But what's the motive? What's driving this killer to commit such atrocities?"
Maya's eyes locked onto Kuroba's. "I think we're just starting to scratch the surface of this case. But one thing is certain - we need to catch this killer before they strike again."
As they walked back to their car, Maya couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
But the feeling persisted.
And then, just as they were about to get into their car, Maya's phone rang.
She answered, and a low, menacing voice spoke on the other end.
"You'll never catch me," the voice said. "I'm always one step ahead."
Maya's heart skipped a beat. "Who is this?" she demanded.
But the line went dead.
Maya's eyes locked onto Kuroba's. "It's him," she said. "The killer."
Kuroba's face darkened. "We need to get to the bottom of this. Now."
And with that, the investigation deepened.
