Lyra Quinn was the weakest wolf in Black Ridge, and on the night she found her destined mate, Alpha Cael Wolfe rejected her before the entire pack. Heartbroken and humiliated, she disappeared while secretly carrying his child.

Five years later, Lyra returns with Noah, the son Cael never knew existed, because her dying mother needs medicine only the Alpha can provide. But Noah's strange Alpha growl exposes a secret Cael cannot ignore—and a paternity test confirms the impossible: the boy is his son and heir.

Then silver light erupts from Lyra's body, awakening a power believed extinct for a hundred years.

She isn't the weakest wolf.

She's the White Wolf.

And now Cael must protect the mate he was forced to reject, the son he never knew he had, and a destiny that could e

The rejection
The first snow of winter fell all over Black Ridge the night that Lyra Quinn discovered that her life was about to change forever. White flakes drifted from the dark sky, settling over the ancient stone courtyard where hundreds of wolves had gathered beneath the light of the full moon. Lamps burned along the walls, their flames dancing wildly in the cold wind as the members of Black Ridge Pack watched the annual Mating Ceremony. Lyra stood at the center of the gathering putting on a simple white dress, her fingers trembling despite how tightly she clasped them together. She could feel hundreds of eyes gazing on her, and every one of them reminded her of the same cruel truth: she was the weakest wolf in their entire pack. At twenty-three, Lyra had failed almost every test the pack had ever assigned to her. Her wolf was slow, her strength was barely above that of an ordinary human, and she had never managed to summon the abilities that other wolves her age has displayed naturally. During combat training, she was always the last to finish, and during strength assessments, she had ranked at the very bottom. Some wolves whispered that she had inherited a defective bloodline, while others openly laughed whenever she entered the training grounds. Lyra had learned to pretend that their words did not hurt, but tonight was different because this was supposed to be the night she finally found her place. The full moon was shining directly above her, and deep inside her chest, her wolf was restless for a reason unknown to her. Then the Alpha entered the courtyard. The pack immediately fell silent as Cael Wolfe walked through the enormous wooden doors of the Alpha House. At twenty-seven, Cael was everything Lyra was not: powerful, disciplined, feared, and respected. His broad shoulders were covered by a black ceremonial coat, while his dark hair moved slightly in the winter wind as he approached the sacred circle. His eyes swept across the gathered wolves before finally landing on Lyra, and something inside her paused. For one breathtaking moment, the entire world seemed to disappear, because the instant their eyes met, Lyra's wolf screamed one word inside her mind. Mate. Lyra's heart hit against her ribs as warmth spread through her body. She had heard stories about finding one's destined mate, but she had never imagined the feeling would be so overwhelming. Cael stopped several feet away from her, and she watched his expression change suddenly. His eyes widened, his jaw tightened, and his hands curled into fists at his sides. He had felt it too. Lyra took one uncertain step toward him, unable to stop the smile that appeared on her lips. “Cael,” she whispered, and for the first time in her life, she allowed herself to believe that perhaps she was not destined to be alone. But Cael did not smile. Behind him, several Elders exchanged worried glances. Elder Marcus, the oldest member of the council, stepped forward and gave Cael a warning look that only the Alpha could understand. Cael's gaze remained fixed on Lyra, but the warmth she had seen earlier was slowly disappearing from his face. His wolf was fighting inside him, desperate to claim its mate, yet Cael knew the ancient law that had governed Black Ridge for generations. An Alpha could not take a weak-ranked mate, because the Elders believed such a union would weaken the Alpha's bloodline and bring disaster upon the pack during war. More importantly, they had made their threat clear: if Cael accepted Lyra publicly, they would remove her from the pack and make certain she never survived the consequences of breaking their law. Cael remembered the warning from earlier that evening. “Reject her, or she dies.” Four words had been enough to turn his heart into a battlefield. He had spent many years preparing to become Alpha, but none of that training had prepared him for the moment when he would have to choose between his position and the woman his wolf recognized as its other half. He wanted to step forward, pull Lyra into his arms, and tell the entire pack that she was his. Instead, he forced himself to remain still. Lyra watched him with growing confusion as tears walked majestically down her cheeks. “Is something wrong?” she asked softly. Cael swallowed hard. His wolf fought violently against the decision, but he forced it down beneath layers of Alpha control. The courtyard had become so quiet that Lyra could hear the distant sound of the wind moving through the pine trees. Cael looked directly into her eyes, and for one brief second, Lyra saw something there that looked painfully close to fear. Then his expression hardened. “Lyra Quinn,” he said, his voice carrying across the entire courtyard. Her heart began to race faster. “I, Cael Wolfe, Alpha of Black Ridge Pack…” He paused. Lyra's smile disappeared. “…reject you as my mate.” The statements struck harder than anything she had ever experienced in her lifetime. A gasp traveled through the crowd, followed by whispers that seemed to come from every direction. Lyra stared at Cael as if she had suddenly forgotten how to breathe. Her wolf whimpered inside her, refusing to understand what had happened. She looked at him desperately, searching his face for some sign that this was a mistake, some indication that he would take the words back. Instead, Cael stood still, his expression cold enough to break her heart. “Why?” she whispered. Cael's chest tightened. He wanted to tell her everything. He wanted to tell her that she was the only person he had ever wanted beside him. He wanted to tell her that he had spent countless nights imagining what it would be like to wake beside her, protect her, and build a family with her. Most of all, he wanted to tell her that the rejection was not because she was weak. But the Elders were watching, and one wrong word could put a target on her back but he refused to say anything. Lyra's eyes was filled with tears as the meaning of his silence became clearer to her. To her, there was no hidden sacrifice, no secret threat, and no difficult choice behind his rejection. There was only humiliation. She had spent her entire life being told she was not good enough, and now the strongest wolf in Black Ridge had confirmed it before everyone she had known. Her knees weakened beneath her, and she stumbled backward. “Please,” she whispered, though she did not even know what she was asking for. Cael's fingers twitched. Every instinct inside him screamed at him to catch her, but he remained at one spot . If he showed weakness now, the Elders would know that he had not truly rejected her. Lyra lowered her head as tears dropped down her cheeks, landing silently on the snow beneath her feet. Around her, the pack watched without understanding the war raging inside their Alpha. All of a sudden, something strange happened. A sharp sensation moved through Lyra's body, beginning somewhere beneath her heart and spreading through every limb. She gasped and pressed a hand against her chest. Her wolf, which had always been quiet and weak, suddenly became restless. The air around her seemed to grow colder, and the moonlight above her intensified until the entire courtyard appeared almost silver. Cael's eyes widened. “Lyra?” She looked down. A small drop of blood had fallen onto the snow. It was not red but silver. The crowd fell silent completely and another drop of silver blood followed then another one. Silver blood spread across the white snow beneath Lyra's feet, glowing faintly beneath the moonlight. Elder Marcus stepped backward, his face suddenly drained of color. For the first time that night, the ancient Elder looked genuinely frightened. “No,” he whispered. Cael stared at Lyra in disbelief as his wolf suddenly lowered its head inside him, not in fear, but in recognition. Elder Marcus looked toward the moon and spoke words that sent a chill through everyone present. “The White Wolf…” Lyra's vision blurred. Then she collapsed onto the snow. Beneath her trembling body, the silver blood began to glow.
