The Luna He Didn’t Deserve
Chapter 1 – The Luna He Didn’t Deserve (Specter- Bad Omens) The words didn’t feel real at first. “You’re pregnant.” They lingered in the quiet space between them, soft and steady, as if they didn’t carry the weight of everything Elena had been waiting for—and everything she was about to lose. Elena sat on the edge of the healer’s cot, her silver hair falling over her shoulder in loose waves, catching the warm glow of candlelight like threads of moonlight woven into something fragile. Her blue eyes—too sharp, too expressive to ever fully hide what she felt—stared at the healer as if she could will the woman to take the words back. “… Say that again,” Elena said, her voice low, controlled, but edged with disbelief. The healer didn’t hesitate this time. “You’re pregnant, Elena. There’s no mistake.” No mistake. That word echoed louder than anything else. Elena’s fingers tightened slightly against the rough linen beneath her before slowly lifting—hesitantly, almost fearfully—to rest over her stomach. Warm. Flat. Unchanged. And yet— Everything was different. “I’m…” She swallowed, her throat suddenly tight. “I’m pregnant.” The realization didn’t hit all at once. It came in waves—small, overwhelming bursts of something she hadn’t felt in months. Relief. Vindication. Something dangerously close to joy. A soft, breathless laugh escaped her before she could stop it, her head dropping slightly as her shoulders shook once. “Finally,” she whispered. After months of being watched. Judged. Measured. Found lacking. After every meeting where her name had been mentioned like a problem that needed solving. After every polite smile, that didn’t quite hide the disappointment behind it. After every night, she lay awake beside Ryker, staring at the ceiling while he slept, turned away from her, the space between them growing wider with each passing week. Her hand pressed more firmly against her stomach now, her blue eyes shimmering faintly as she exhaled slowly. “I did it,” she murmured. Not just for the pack. For herself. For the part of her that had begun to believe them. That she wasn’t enough. “The Alpha will be very pleased.” The healer’s words cut through the moment gently. Too gently. And just like that— Everything shifted. Elena stilled. The warmth in her chest didn’t disappear—but it changed. Tilted. Warped into something uncertain. Her gaze lifted slowly, her expression tightening almost imperceptibly. A memory surfaced. Ryker’s voice—low, cold, distant. “You’re not fulfilling your role.” Another. One of the elders, seated at the long table. “The pack cannot wait forever.” And then— The quietest one. The one that hurt the most. Ryker, standing beside them. Saying nothing. Elena inhaled slowly, her fingers curling slightly against her stomach. The joy was still there. But fragile now. Surrounded by something sharper. More dangerous. “I…” she began, then stopped. The healer tilted her head. “Elena?” She forced a small smile. Controlled. Practiced. The kind she had learned to wear long before this moment. “He doesn’t need to know yet.” The healer blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Elena, this is important. The Alpha—” “I know exactly how important it is,” Elena said, more firmly now. Because she did. That was the problem. If Ryker knew— This wouldn’t be about her. It wouldn’t be about everything she had endured to get here. It would be about the heir. And Elena had a sinking feeling— She would become secondary. Replaceable. Her hand pressed protectively against her stomach again. “I’ll tell him,” she added, softer now. “Just… not yet, I want to surprise him.” The healer hesitated, then nodded slowly. Though concern lingered in her eyes. “This should be a happy moment,” she said gently. Elena let out a quiet breath. Her gaze drifting slightly. Unfocused. “Yeah,” she said. “It should be.” But it didn’t feel safe. And deep inside— A quiet, unwelcome thought formed. Her hand slipped to hold her stomach. The first time they called her Luna, Elena didn’t feel powerful. She felt watched. Measured. Judged. The word echoed through Blackthorn territory like a title she had borrowed but hadn’t yet earned. She stood tall anyway. Because in a place like Blackthorn, weakness wasn’t forgiven. It was hunted. And Elena Carter refused to be prey. The bond had been instant. Violent. Unavoidable. One moment she had been human—just a girl working a normal job, living a normal life—and the next, everything had shifted. Ryker Blackthorn had walked into the room, and the world had tilted. The connection snapped into place like fate had been waiting for that exact moment to claim her. It was overwhelming. Powerful. Terrifying. And for a while… She believed in it. Believed in him. At first, being his mate didn’t feel like a mistake. It felt like purpose. She learned quickly, she adapted. Because she had to. And slowly, the pack began to accept her. Not fully. Not easily. But enough. She became useful. Valuable. A Luna. Or at least… That’s what she thought. The problem wasn’t Elena. The problem was time. Months passed. Then more. And with every passing day, something invisible began to shift. At first, it was quiet. Barely noticeable. A whisper behind her back. A look that lingered too long. “Elena hasn’t conceived.” “Is she even capable?” “The pack needs an heir.” She heard it all. Even when they thought she didn’t. But she ignored it. Because Ryker would handle it. He had to. He was Alpha. He had chosen her. He said nothing. And that silence… That was the beginning of the end. “You’re avoiding your responsibilities.” The words came one night, sharp and unexpected. Elena turned slowly, disbelief flickering across her face. “I’ve been working all day.” “That’s not your role.” “And what exactly is my role?” she asked, already knowing the answer she didn’t want to hear. Ryker’s gaze didn’t soften. “To secure the future of this pack.” The meaning landed. Heavy. Clear. Cruel in its simplicity. Elena felt something inside her tighten. “I am securing this pack.” “Not in the way that matters.” There it was. Not shouted. Not argued. Just… stated. Like fact. Like truth. And it cut deeper than anger ever could. After that, everything changed. Not all at once. But enough. He stopped reaching for her. Stopped standing close. Stopped looking at her like she was his. The moment Elena stepped back into Blackthorn territory, she felt it. Something had changed. The air was heavier. Not thick with hostility. But with anticipation. Wolves stood in small groups along the training grounds, their conversations low but deliberate. Heads turned as she passed—not subtly, not quietly. Openly. Her blue eyes narrowed slightly. This wasn’t normal. Her hand drifted to her stomach again. Protective. But her instincts— The ones she had sharpened surviving in a pack that never fully accepted her— Told her otherwise. Something had already happened. And she wasn’t prepared for it. She moved faster. Her boots crunching against gravel as she approached the pack house. The large wooden doors stood open. Waiting. Inside— The room was full. Too full. Elders sat at the front. Warriors lined the walls. Every wolf in the pack seemed to be there. And at the center— Ryker. Elena stopped just inside the entrance. He hadn’t looked at her yet. Or worse— He had. And chose not to. Her chest tightened. This wasn’t coincidence. This was planned. “Elena.” The elder’s voice echoed through the room. Her name echoed through the room. Too formal. Too distant. Not Luna, just Elena. She walked forward anyway. Because she wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of hesitation. “What’s going on?” she asked. No one answered her. Instead, they looked at him. Ryker turned. And everything inside her went still. He was exactly as she remembered. Tall. Broad. Dark hair slightly tousled. Power radiating from him like it always had. But his eyes— There was nothing there. No warmth. No connection. No bond. Just… Finality. “Elena,” he said. Her name sounded foreign on his tongue. “The pack has made a decision.” Her heart dropped. She already knew. But hearing it— Would make it real. “The Luna has failed to produce an heir,” the elder announced. The words struck like a blade. Elena’s fingers curled. Her nails pressing into her palm. “Therefore,” the elder continued, “we have chosen a new Luna.” Elena’s stomach twisted. Serena Vale. She had always been there. Lurking. Watching. Waiting. And now— She was standing beside him, — Ryker. “Elena—” he began. “Don’t.” Her voice cut through the room like a blade. Sharp. Controlled. Furious. Her eyes locked onto him. “You cheated.” The word hit hard. Heavy. Unavoidable. “It’s not that simple,” Ryker said. Elena laughed. Bitter. Sharp. “It’s exactly that simple.” She stepped closer, her anger no longer contained. “You couldn’t even reject me first?” she demanded. “You couldn’t even give me that much respect?” Serena shifted, lifting her chin. “I’m carrying the Alpha’s heir.” Elena’s gaze snapped at her, ice-cold. “You didn’t earn anything,” she said flatly. “You just made it easier for him to replace me.” Then back to Ryker. “You went behind my back. Slept with her. And now you’re standing here like this is justified?” His silence was answer enough. Her chest tightened—but this time, it didn’t break her. It hardened her. “Good,” Elena said quietly. “Now I know exactly what you are.” She straightened slowly. Lifted her chin. And at that moment— Everything shifted. “I reject you, Ryker Blackthorn.” The room froze. Shock rippled through every wolf present. The bond snapped— partially, violent, sharp. Tearing through her chest— But she didn’t fall. Didn’t break. Because this time— It was her choice. “You don’t get to decide my worth, and you don’t get to humiliate me in front of this pack.” she said. Her gaze flicked briefly to Serena. Then back. “You want an heir?” Her voice hardened. “Congratulations.” She turned and walked out. Not broken. Not begging. Not looking back. She didn’t go back to her room. Didn’t gather everything. Didn’t say goodbye. She took what she needed. And left. By the time the sun dipped low, casting shadows across the edge of Blackthorn territory, Elena stood at the boundary. Silver hair catching the fading light. Blue eyes sharp. Her hand rested over her stomach. Gentle. Certain. “They didn’t deserve you,” she whispered. A pause. “… And neither did he.” The words felt real now. She stepped forward. Into the unknown.
