The Alpha’s Decision

Chapter 4 –The Alpha’s Decision (Damian’s POV) (Stuck in my Head — Sleep Theory) Damian didn’t slow as he carried Elena out of the forest and into the clearing. The moment they crossed the unseen boundary, the shift was immediate. The wild scent of the forest gave way to something structured—wood smoke, worn earth, and the layered presence of wolves who lived here. The clearing stretched wide beneath the night sky, torches casting flickering light against dark timber buildings. Conversations died instantly as heads turned. Every eye landed on them—on him, their Alpha, and on her, the unknown in his arms. Elena felt it like pressure against her skin. Her fingers curled slightly into Damian’s shirt as her sharp blue eyes scanned everything—the people, the layout, the way they watched him with familiarity and her with suspicion. “Where exactly did you bring me?” she said, her voice low but steady, needing to understand where she was. “Silver Ridge,” Damian said calmly. “My territory. My pack.” The answer was direct, grounding her in the reality of where she stood now. Elena’s gaze sharpened slightly. “That explains the staring,” she said, already aware she didn’t belong. “They’re assessing you,” Damian replied. “That’s a polite way to say judging.” Elena said, feeling small in the moment. “Yes.” She huffed softly. “Good to know nothing changes.” “Damian!” The voice cut across the clearing—bright, relieved, filled with unmistakable emotion. Elena turned as a woman moved quickly through the gathered wolves, her steps confident, her posture familiar with the space. Her golden eyes lit the moment they landed on Damian, and a genuine smile spread across her face. “You’re back—” she said, her voice warm with relief. She stopped. Her gaze leavng Damian's dropped to Elena's. To the way Damian was holding her—close, secure, without hesitation. The smile disappeared instantly. Something colder replaced it. “What is this?” Liora said, her tone losing all warmth as something sharper took over. “She’s injured,” Damian said. “That’s not what I asked,” Liora said, stepping directly in front of them. Elena shifted slightly in his arms despite the pain, irritation rising. “I’m guessing you’re not here to help in anyway?,” Elena said dryly. “And I’m guessing you’re not supposed to be here,” Liora said sharply. “Funny,” Elena said, almost amused. “I had the same thought.” Liora ignored her, turning her full attention back to Damian. “You brought a stranger into the pack without warning or explanation,” Liora said, her voice tightening. “She needed help.” “And that’s all she is?” Liora asked, her tone sharpening. Elena caught the implication immediately. “I’m litterally right here,” Elena said. “I’m aware,” Liora replied dismissively. That did it. “If you’re going to talk about me,” Elena said coolly, straightening despite the pain, “you could at least pretend I’m part of the conversation.” Liora turned fully this time, her restraint slipping. “You’re not part of anything here,” Liora said. “You’re a problem.” Elena didn’t flinch. “She’s staying,” Damian said firmly, cutting through the tension. “What?” Liora said, disbelief slipping through. “She stays.” he said. The finality in his voice left no room for argument. “You don’t know anything about her,” Liora said, stepping closer to him. “You don’t know where she came from, who she’s tied to, or what she could bring into this pack.” “And yet I’m still here,” Elena said. Liora ignored her again. “That’s not good enough,” Liora said. “Not for you. Not for this pack.” “I know enough,” Damian said. “No,” Liora said, shaking her head. “You don’t.” She stepped closer again, the distance between them too familiar to be just about authority. She wrapped her hands around Damian's bicept, clinging to him as if he were to disapear. “You don’t make decisions like this without thinking them through,” Liora said more quietly. “I did think it through,” Damian said. Liora searched his face, looking for hesitation, for doubt. She didn’t find it. “You’re choosing this?” she asked. “I’m deciding what’s necessary,” Damian said, shaking her hands off of him. That wasn’t the answer she wanted. “This isn’t over,” Liora said quietly. “I’d be disappointed if it was,” Elena said. Damian moved past Liora without another word, carrying Elena into the pack house. The warmth of the room didn’t ease the tension that followed them inside. He lowered Elena carefully into a chair, his movements controlled and deliberate. “You didn’t have to do that,” Elena said. “Do what?” Damian asked. “The dramatic entrance,” she said, gesturing slightly. “The declaration. The part where you decided my situation for me.” “It wasn’t dramatic,” Damian said. “It absolutely was,” she replied. “You're staying,” he repeated. “You don’t even know me,” Elena said. “I know enough.” He looked down at her, eyes speaking volumes. “That seems to be your favorite line.” She responded softly. “It works.” he assured her. “Debatable.” A quieter pause settled between them. “You don’t owe me anything,” Elena said, her voice softening slightly. “I didn’t ask you to bring me here.” “I know,” Damian said. “That doesn’t change anything.” “It should.” “It doesn’t.” “Why?” Damian asked. “Because this isn’t your responsibility,” Elena said. He hesitated slightly. “Because I don’t ignore something when it matters,” Damian said. “That’s not an answer,” Elena said. “It will be.” “What does that mean?” she asked. “It means you’re in Silver Ridge now,” Damian said. “And while you’re here… you’re under my protection.” That grounded the situation, even if it didn’t explain everything. “You’re very sure of that,” Elena said. “Yes.” “You’re impossible.” “Yes.” “Damian.” He looked at her. “You don’t have to do this,” Elena said. “Yes,” he said quietly. “I do.” “Why?” she asked. He held her gaze, the answer sitting right there—but not spoken. “Because—” He stopped. And this time, Elena felt it. Whatever he wasn’t saying… Wasn’t about the pack. It was about her.
