chapter 1
An Unexpected Engagement The aroma of freshly ground coffee beans enveloped me as I pushed open the heavy glass door of Café Noir. The familiar chime above the entrance announced my arrival, and Sarah, the barista, gave me a knowing smile. "The usual, Ava?" she called over the hiss of the espresso machine. I nodded, slipping my Platinum card from my Hermès wallet. "Please," I said, stifling a yawn. "And maybe an extra shot today?" Sarah laughed. "Rough morning already?" "You have no idea," I muttered, thinking of the three international video calls I'd already fielded from my home office before most people had even hit snooze. Being CEO of a multinational corporation meant my day started when most people were still dreaming. As I waited for my latte, I leaned against the cool marble countertop, idly scrolling through my phone. The café buzzed with the usual morning crowd – a mix of business types, students, and the occasional tourist. A man in a suit that screamed 'trying too hard' was gesticulating wildly as he spoke into his bluetooth earpiece, narrowly avoiding knocking over his own drink with each emphatic hand motion. Amateur. My phone vibrated with a news alert. Probably another market update or- "BREAKING: Billionaire Alex Russo to Wed Ava Silver in Surprise Ceremony" My fingers went numb. The phone slipped from my grasp, clattering onto the counter. "Woah there!" Sarah said, sliding my latte across the marble. "Everything okay?" I blinked at her, my mouth dry. I wasn’t even sure what to say, or what to think. With trembling hands, I picked up my phone and re-read the headline. It hadn't changed. Me. Marrying Alex Russo. The same Alex Russo who'd called me a "stubborn, infuriating woman" during our last board meeting. The man I'd privately dubbed "The Bane of My Existence" and occasionally, after particularly trying days, much less flattering names. Sure, we were working together on a clean energy project that could be game changer for both our companies. But that was business. This... this was outright insanity. "Ava?" Sarah's concerned voice cut through my spiral. "Your latte's getting cold." "Right. Thanks." I grabbed the warm cup, the familiar weight anchoring me slightly. I needed air. Needed to think. Outside, the crisp autumn breeze hit my face, clearing some of the fog from my mind. I sipped my latte, barely tasting it, as I walked aimlessly down the busy sidewalk. My phone felt like a bomb in my pocket, ready to explode with notifications at any moment. As if on cue, it started ringing. Dad's smiling face lit up the screen. My stomach dropped. With a deep breath, I answered. "Hi, Dad." "Ava, sweetheart!" His voice was breathless with excitement. "Why didn't you tell me? I had to hear about my only daughter's engagement from the morning news!" I stopped walking, nearly causing a collision with a hurried businessman behind me. "Dad, listen-" "I always knew you two would figure it out eventually. The way you talk about him... all that passion had to lead somewhere!" I leaned against a nearby building, its rough brick scraping my back through my thin blouse. "What are you talking about? I've never said anything positive about Alex." Dad chuckled. "Oh, come on. 'He's so infuriating, Dad. You won't believe what he said in the meeting today.' Every other sentence out of your mouth is about him!" I opened my mouth to protest, but no words came out. Had I really been talking about Alex that much? "Don't you worry about a thing," Dad continued, oblivious to my internal crisis. "I'll handle all the arrangements. You just focus on being happy, okay?" "But Dad-" "Oh, I've got to call your Aunt Sarah! She'll be over the moon. Love you, sweetie!" The line went dead. I stared at my phone, then at my now-cold latte. What just happened? A gust of wind sent a flurry of golden leaves dancing around my feet. I watched them swirl, my mind racing. How did a simple misunderstanding spiral so quickly out of control? The smart thing would be to call Alex immediately. To coordinate our responses, to nip this ridiculous rumor in the bud before it spread any further. To laugh it off as the absurd mix-up it clearly was. So why was my finger hovering over his contact info, unable to press 'call'? And why couldn't I shake the feeling that some small, traitorous part of me was... intrigued? No. Absolutely not. I was not excited about a fake engagement to Alex Russo. I was annoyed. Furious, even. Wasn't I? I tossed my unfinished latte in a nearby trash can, the thud echoing my resolve. I needed answers, and I knew exactly where to find them. Alex Russo had some serious explaining to do. The Russo Corp building loomed ahead, its glass facade reflecting the morning sun. As I approached, my determination wavered. What was I even going to say? Too late for second thoughts. The revolving door spun me into the sleek lobby, my heels clicking against the polished marble floor. The receptionist looked up, recognition flickering in her eyes. "Ms. Silver? I didn't know you had an appointment today." I forced a smile. "Last minute thing. Is Alex- I mean, Mr. Russo available?" She frowned, tapping at her computer. "He's in a meeting, but-" "Great, thanks!" I called over my shoulder, already halfway to the elevators. The ride up felt endless. I caught my reflection in the mirrored walls – flushed cheeks, wild eyes. I looked... well, exactly like someone who'd just found out they were fake-engaged to their business rival. With a soft 'ding', the doors opened onto the executive floor. I strode past Alex's protesting secretary and burst into his office without knocking. "We need to talk. Now." Alex was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, phone to his ear. He turned at my entrance, one eyebrow raised in that infuriatingly perfect arch. The Seattle skyline spread out behind him, a backdrop worthy of a corporate king. "I'll call you back," he said into the phone, his eyes never leaving mine. He set it down on his imposing mahogany desk, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. "Well, if it isn't my blushing bride-to-be." I crossed my arms, acutely aware of my windblown hair and rumpled blouse. "Cut the crap, Alex. What the hell is going on?" He had the audacity to look amused. "I assume you're referring to our sudden engagement?" "Oh, you assume correctly," I snapped, pacing across the plush carpet. "Care to explain how half the world seems to think we're getting married?" Alex sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. For a moment, he looked almost... vulnerable? But no, that couldn't be right. Alex Russo didn't do vulnerable. "Believe it or not, I'm as surprised as you are," he said, moving to sit on the edge of his desk. "Apparently, my assistant mixed up some files. The press release about our clean energy partnership got jumbled with... well, with something else." I paused my pacing, not buying it for a second. "And you expect me to believe that? That this is all just some colossal mistake?" "Whether you believe me or not doesn't change the facts, Ava," he said, his tone maddeningly calm. "The question is, what do we do now?" I blinked. "What do we do? We tell the truth, obviously! We issue a statement, clear up the misunderstanding, and go back to our lives." Alex stood, moving closer. Too close. I could smell his cologne, something woodsy and expensive. "It's not that simple," he said softly. "Of course it is," I insisted, taking a step back until I felt the cool glass of the window behind me. "Unless... unless you planned this somehow. Is that it? Is this some kind of twisted PR stunt for the project?" He actually had the nerve to laugh. "Trust me, if I were going to fake an engagement, I'd choose someone far less argumentative." I opened my mouth to retort, but he held up a hand. "Think about it, Ava. This misunderstanding... it could be beneficial. For both of us." "Beneficial?" I echoed, incredulous. "How on earth-" "The project," he said, his eyes intense. "You know as well as I do that we're facing opposition. But a united front? A power couple dedicated to clean energy? That's a narrative people can get behind." I stared at him, my mind reeling. He couldn't be serious. And yet... a small voice in the back of my head whispered that he had a point. No. This was insane. "My father thinks this is real," I said, grasping for solid ground. "He's already planning the wedding!" Something flickered in Alex's eyes. Guilt? Impossible. "I'm sorry about that," he said, and he actually sounded sincere. "But think of the good we could do. The lives we could change with this project." I shook my head, trying to clear it. This was Alex Russo, for crying out loud. The man I'd sworn was put on this earth specifically to drive me crazy. I couldn't seriously be considering... "You're out of your mind," I said, but my voice lacked conviction. Alex smiled, and for once it wasn't his usual smirk. It was something softer, almost warm. "Maybe," he agreed. "But admit it, Ava. A part of you is intrigued." I wanted to deny it. I wanted to storm out of his office and never look back. Instead, I heard myself say, "I'll think about it." What was I doing? As I turned to leave, my eyes caught on a photo on his desk. A younger Alex, arms around a dark-haired woman. Both smiling. Happy. "Who's that?" I asked before I could stop myself. Alex's expression shuttered. He reached out, turning the frame face-down with a soft thud. "No one," he said, his voice suddenly cold. "Just a reminder of why I don't do relationships." I left his office with more questions than answers, my head spinning. The elevator descended, my stomach dropping with it. What had I just agreed to consider? And why did I suddenly care about Alex Russo's past? As I stepped back onto the busy Seattle street, the cool air hit my flushed cheeks. The world felt different somehow, as if the axis of my life had shifted in the span of a morning. One thing was certain: things had just gotten a whole lot more complicated.
