Chapter 1
In a clandestine rendezvous, I shared a moment with Caden, my closest companion and partner in mischief. Despite my growing apprehension, Caden excitedly revealed our plan for the grandest con. As we entered the eerie abandoned building, Hannah's unease lingered, and my attempts to dissuade Caden from the risky endeavor fell on deaf ears.
Instructed by Caden to stay outside, I hesitated near the doors. Suddenly, gunshots shattered the air, making me jump. Anxious, I cautiously peered through the door's crack only to witness a chilling scene – Caden, my partner in crime, lying on the floor.
"You believed you could swindle us out of our money? How foolish do you take us for?" a tall man in a sharp suit sneered.
A gasp escaped my lips, capturing the attention of those nearby. Realizing the gravity of the situation, I swiftly opted for escape. Through dimly lit alleyways, I sprinted out of the building, attempting to seamlessly merge with the bustling city crowd. However, my sharp senses detected well-dressed figures tailing me discreetly. Panic set in as I quickened my pace to a brisk walk, yet the persistent men maintained their proximity, intensifying my growing anxiety.
Lost in my thoughts, I collided with a stranger, my panic rising when I looked up to meet the gaze of a tall man with brown hair and dark brown eyes.
"A-apologies," I stammered, only to find him gazing past me. When his eyes met mine, a warm smile replaced his distant expression.
"No worries. You can make it up to me – care to buy me another coffee?" he suggested, guiding me into a nearby coffee shop without allowing any chance for escape. "What's your coffee preference?" he inquired, leaving me with no room to elude the unexpected encounter.
Perplexed, I queried, "Wait, I thought I was the one replacing your coffee," my gaze fixed on the man who merely looked down, smirking at me.
"You strike me as someone with a sweet tooth. I'll handle the order," he asserted, effortlessly placing it and leading me to a table after settling the payment.
"But I didn't even pay to replace your coffee," I admitted, staring at my hands with a sense of remorse.
"Don't fret about that. What intrigues me more is why the Aldo mafia is tailing you," he remarked, fixing his gaze on me. "How did you even find out?" I questioned, my eyes widening in shock.
"I've witnessed the Aldo gang in action countless times," he remarked, placing a badge on the table.
"Are you a cop?" I inquired.
"An undercover agent and a hired bodyguard," he clarified, locking eyes with me. "I can assist you with your predicament," he offered.
"How can you do that? I can't afford to pay you," I admitted skeptically.
He offered a reassuring smile. "I help you, and you help me," he stated matter-of-factly.
"Why do I sense regret in my future?" I mumbled, though he heard me.
"You might, but I assure you your safety. I'll even compensate you for your assistance. By the way, I was on my way to find you, Hannah. It seems you and your friend Caden pulled off a sizable scam, and now a prominent businessman wants his money back," he chuckled, producing a substantial file.
I bite my lip and swallow a gulp, my mouth goes dry, leaving me utterly speechless.
"Agree to assist me, and I'll wipe your debts, pay you generously, and ensure they steer clear of you. With me around, they won't lay a finger on you; they know me too well," he assured, nodding towards the two men outside. I glance sidelong, spotting the familiar figures from earlier.
"Okay, I'm in. What do you need me to do?" I relent, a new sense of worry gripping me.
"I'll explain after we gather your things. You'll stay with me until our trip," he declared, smiling as he sat upright.
"Our trip?" she queried, perplexed.
"All will be revealed tomorrow. Taking a brief break out of town is a wise move," he stated matter-of-factly.
"I can't believe I'm going along with this. That badge could be fake," I skeptically remarked.
"How about I prove it's genuine?" he proposed, rising and gesturing for her to follow. As I trail behind, I soon realize we are standing in front of the local police station. In one of the rooms sat Mr. Stien, the target of mine and Caden's last significant con before the Aldo mafia entered the picture.
"Wait in that room over there. I'll negotiate a deal with Mr. Stien. If he agrees, you'll be cleared of all charges," he instructed, gesturing toward a nearby room. After about 15 minutes, he returned with news.
"Mr. Stien is dropping all charges. Now, about your other predicament. We'll be heading out of state. Care to explain why the Aldo Mafia is after you?" he inquired, taking a seat in front of me.
