🌿 PROLOGUE
The first time Golden Keith Fuentalbon stepped onto the land, she complained about the dust. Not quietly, not politely, but loudly enough for the wind to carry her voice across rows of young crops and straight into the ears of the man who had spent his life protecting them. “I cannot believe my father sent me here,” she said, lifting the hem of her expensive dress just enough to keep it from touching the ground. “This is not a retreat. This is exile.” The countryside did not respond. It never did. It simply breathed. The sky stretched wide above her, endless and unbothered. The air smelled of soil, fresh and alive, a scent she did not understand. To her, it was unfamiliar. To someone else, it was home. That someone stood a few meters away, watching her without moving. Yseldous Grae Villasanse did not need to raise his voice to be heard. He did not need to introduce himself either. The land already knew him, and in a way, that was enough. Still, he stepped forward. “You’re standing on newly planted rows,” he said, calm and steady. “If you move two steps to your left, you won’t ruin weeks of work.” Golden turned, surprised more by his tone than his words. He was not rude. He was not angry. But he was not accommodating either. He simply expected to be listened to. “And you are?” she asked, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “Yseldous,” he replied. “Owner of this farm.” She blinked once, then twice. “Oh,” she said, then looked around again. “So this is yours.” There was a pause. “Then I suppose you should do something about it.” He raised an eyebrow. “About what?” “This.” She gestured broadly, as if the entire countryside had personally offended her. “The dust. The heat. The
everything.” For a brief second, something shifted in his expression. Not anger, not amusement. Something quieter. Something closer to disbelief. Then it was gone. “This farm feeds families,” he said. “It employs people who rely on it. It doesn’t exist to make you comfortable.” Golden let out a short laugh, though it carried no humor. “Well, that’s unfortunate,” she said. “Because I’m going to be here for a while.” Yseldous nodded once. “Then you’ll learn.” “Learn what?” she challenged. He met her gaze directly, unwavering. “How to stay.” Golden did not realize it then, but that moment would change everything. Because for the first time in her life, someone had not tried to impress her, not tried to please her, not tried to follow her. Instead, he stood firm. And for the first time, she didn’t walk away. Somewhere between the soil and the silence, between arguments and laughter, between leaving and choosing to remain, something would grow. Not quickly. Not easily. But deeply. And in time, they would both understand something they had never been taught. That a home is not measured by land, or money, or walls. It is built, quietly and patiently, by two people who decide to stay.
