The Real Mystery Is Our History
The Real Mystery Is Our History
“Gossips today,History later”, a line which I heard from a TV show that tackles about the histories of the Philippines. Things that are not believable in the past becomes a history now that every Filipino people or others need to know and looked back on. Not all people finds interest in studying history it can bore you a lot,but visualizing the history that you are studying and imagining you are part of that event can make you understand it better.Past is a thing that we can never undo but it is a life lesson and background of all the things that are happening in this modern world generation. It is still valuable and necessary to learn all about history.
Based on the “mainstreaming indigenous knowledge in the tertiary education” by Dr.Danilo Gerona,it gives me a clearer insights about what happened in the Magellan and Lapu-Lapu story that was being taught since we where in Elementary. In Dr.Gerona’s transcript that he shared he stated that Lapu-Lapu was a seventy years old that carry’s a baston instead of a bolo like what the legend told us and Magellan was young and have a lot of children outside his marriage and a Playboy. It is a contradict to what have been taught to us that Lapu-Lapu was a muscular and Magellan are both a warriors, that was defeated by Lapu-Lapu. This was all the contrary from professor Xiao Chua’s Philippines History interview,he stated that Lapu-Lapu indeed a troop leader but there is no concrete evidence that he really killed Magellan with his own hands with his bolo. As Dr. Gerona’s discussion continues it shows theory of wave migration,Negritos,Indones and Malay written by Henry Otley Beyer.I still believe in the story that has been taught to us since elementary until highschool in fact this different stories about the Magellan and Lapu-Lapu gives me an interest and it can help in showing that younger generations that history is not boring as it seems, it can be interesting you’re like investigating a mystery problems which until now no one really knows what really happened there are a lot of different sides of stories that you need to evaluate what is the most believable and reliable. History might confuse us but it could be a stronger foundation for us to know the past to build a better future with the lesson we learned form our History.
Since it was his specialization most of his works are in 1600s. Based on him Magellan arrived in early 1510 in Asia and discovered the Philippines accidentally. And he might do some research about the place he have traveled. In studying Indigenous people it is important to know all the background stories for he encountered the first native Filipinos in our country. In his long study on the hermeneutics of power analyzing the relationship between the natives and the Spaniards. Millions of Filipinos and only few Spaniards but they still manage to control all of them I think it has to do with the way they communicate and persuade Filipinos. One example of this is when the Spaniards Spaniards tell the Indios on how they should live and operate in the society, which they are required to do and follow. Dr. Gerona’s study helps me to have a clearer insights and knowledge about the Philippines indigenous people and they’ve experienced in the past. It really wonders me that “ If we are not colonized by the Spaniards are we still going to have a future like this?” or “ why didn’t the indigenous fought the Spaniards when we were many from them? And why does it take so much time to be the slaves of the Spanish people?”. Our history is really a mystery to everyone no one really knows the real story from what have happened before, and I think no one has the courage to study intensively about the past for they are afraid to commit mistakes or cannot find a stronger proof to stand what they have studied and researched. Our ancestors choose to leave their ancestral lands to move high on the mountains to avoid the Spaniards from colonizing their practices and cultures to. Being Indigenous is a choice made by those brave native Filipinos for me because they are not afraid to make a stand and be committed on their traditional beliefs and practices. Even if it means to be left out and remain the way they have grown up before the Spaniards arrived. Indigenous people are really special for me based on the study about them, they can’t fight their rights in a form of battling the Spaniards but they did their best just to remain and preserved their traditions and culture without being influenced by the Spanish people.
The study about indigenous people awakens my interest the way they choose to stay in practicing and preserving our traditions in this generation where it is not familiar or known anymore because we admit it or not we really have adopted the foreign beliefs and customs. Only the indigenous people really practices the old beliefs, and shares it now to us in the modern world that we forget some of it. The natives makes me realized that we don’t need to blend in all the trends and changes in our world sometimes we need to be different and continue to live the way we are especially if we think it is the right thing to do. This only shows how Filipinos really love their country and do all their best to keep it alive and being practice up to present time.IP’s serves as a reflection for us modern Filipinos in the ways we live in the past and how our ancestors sees life and how to live with it, with our chins lift up as a sign that we are proud of what they are and where we came from before we reached this modern world. They can really help us to looked back on the past that proves us that it is indeed an amazing thing to be part or atleast have a background about indigenous, after all we came from their too. We evolved and cope up with the modernization brought by the colonizers but they are the brave ones who fought with all their might to keep and preserved it, because of the choice they made here they are making our History a lot more interesting.
