He means everything to her. He is both her strength and her kryptonite.

Their world is rife with death and violence, but she will do everything she can to keep him safe. They're not lovers; they've never been, and they never will be. They simply work together, got each other's back during missions. She'll do anything for him, even if it means letting him go, just as he wished.

“We could have been ride or die partners, Soul.” I said looking at the horizon, while leaning on the hood of his car. “But I respect your wishes, your happiness is also mine. I would say goodbye, except…” I paused and looked at him, he’s already staring intensely at me. I genuinely smiled at him “I’m a call away, I will always be there for you, even if you don’t need me to”. I hugged him for the last time, just a short but meaningful hug. He didn’t return the gesture, I pulled away and patted his back as I got my car keys out of my pocket.

“Call me when you and your family need help and if I don’t answer, then it’s probably because I’m dead. Remember the first promise I made to you when we became partners? That I’ll always answer your calls and if I don’t then, I already died”. I got into my car, honked 3 times, and never looked back. I love you, Soul. Take care of your girl and yourself. Keep safe.

Chapter 1
A killing machine, that’s what I am. Trained by the best of the best, to be the best of the best on the field. Does that even make sense? I don’t know anymore, I don’t know what’s really going on. It all happened too fast. One minute I was out on the playground playing with the kids my age, the next minute I was grabbed and got hauled on a van, after that I was trained till I dropped. My life at the agency was nothing but gray and black until I met him. My soul. The one who made everything tolerable. “SCARLETTE!” I snapped out of my reverie when I heard my name being called. “What?” I blandly asked him. He gave me a Cheshire grin. “We have a mission, let’s go” I followed him on the way to his father’s office. He’s Caius De La Vega, my partner in the field. He’s been with me for over a decade now. He’s the opposite of me, he’s like a ray of f*****g sunshine and I’m a dark gloomy cloud. But when it comes to the field, we’re both lethal, you mess with us, you’ll die. Simple. He entered his father’s office without knocking and immediately sat down on one of the couches. I stood my ground, standing like a f*****g soldier I am in front of my general. “You may sit, Scarlette. This will be a long discussion” my general said without even looking at me, eyes still on his computer. I sat down beside Caius, not without kicking his legs out of the way so I could have my space. He hissed in pain and gave me a glare. Like that’ll scare me. “This will take a couple of weeks, even months to finish this mission” he started, I’m feeling that I won't be liking the next words that will come out of his mouth. “You’ll be guarding the governor’s daughter, Ms. Irina Lopes.” I was right. I ain’t a f*****g babysitter, I’m an agent. He must have noticed the look I gave him. “This is an important job, Scar. Besides you three have history, yes? Then it’ll be easy. Oh, before I forget, Caius your brothers and cousins will be joining.” History eh? Oh yeah, she’s Caius’ ex-girlfriend. She’s a whiny b***h, the reason why I don’t particularly like her. Her voice irritates the hell outta me, she’s like a screeching hyena and I’ve heard and seen actual hyenas. General De La Vega gave us more details of the mission, he said that they received a threat because of the coming elections and all that jazz. We’ll start tomorrow yada yada, pack up some yada yada. Yeah, I ain’t happy with this mission, that's crystal clear. We discussed the game plan when the older De La Vega boys graced us with their oh-so-awesome presence, their words not mine. I stayed silent most of the time, putting inputs when asked, but that’s only it. That’s not new anyway, I’m more of a silent type, talking causes a lot of energy, I don't like it. Once we finished the plan, we packed up and left with the chopper. “Scar” Caius called me, I hummed in response not looking at him since I’m the pilot, I’d rather not die because I crashed into something, na-uh not gonna happen. “You think my feelings for her will come back when I see her?” I rolled my eyes, oh this lovesick fool. “If you’re feeling that sappy s**t you’ve been telling me about, then your feelings for her did not actually disappear, the ones you’ve been convincing yourself that you’ve moved on. It was just hidden or buried or something” I deadass told him. He’s like one of those blind puppies in love thingy, I don't even know what’s that called. “You think we’re gonna give ourselves another chance?” He asked again after a minute of silence “A chance in what? Pain?” I deadpanned. “You’re really mean, a chance in love, you i***t” I just shrugged his glare off. “I mean, if you’re up for another round of pain, then go for it. But I ain't gonna drinking with your cry baby a*s when you get your heart broken again, my organs almost couldn’t handle the amount of alcohol you made me drink with you 2 years ago”  But from what I saw, that s**t their feeling wasn't love, they're just using each other because they were deprived of their so-called love language. Eh but who am I to talk, I’ve never been in love. “No pain, no love” he dumbly stated. “It's no pain, no gain, you fool” He laughed, “I know,  just messing with you” I rolled my eyes.  “5 minutes till drop-off point. Wake the others up”. He mocked saluted and left the pilot cabin. “Gentlemen, I would recommend buckling up for landing, but if you don’t value life then don’t bother.” I heard them laugh at my statement and they buckled up. Huh, I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t value life. I slowly maneuvered our transport to land on our client’s helipad. As expected, we landed safely and they immediately got out to greet our client. I took my time, I’m the pilot after all, if they complain I could just run them over without getting into trouble, could just reason that there’s a malfunction. No sweat. As I got out, I straightened my posture “This is Scarlette Rouge, the right-hand woman of our team, tech and comms op, also the pilot and sniper” Caius introduced me to Mr. Joaquin Lopes and his family, I saw the bitchirina looked my way, oops I mean Irina, must’ve mistaken her for a b***h. Sarcasm. I just gave them a lazy salute not bothering with a handshake that Mr. Lopes offered.  “Pleasure to meet you and your amazing team, Caius. I didn’t know that your agency accepts women, I bet they’re much weaker than most of your men, it’s kinda surprising that there’s a woman on your team. I thought she’s just an escort”. I smirked inwardly, Wrong words, bud. “That woman in front of you can kill you in seconds without an evidence that could lead to her as your perpetrator, she can break all 206 of your bones in different places, can and will simply choke you to death before your security could react and can carve your heart and eyes out with just mere high heels that she’s wearing—” I cut off Caius by raising my hand, I looked dead into the eyes of this fat wanker, I smirked evilly, and threw my knife at him. Of course, it’s still attached to me, there’s a very thin fiber attached to its handle, the one that’s also connected to my fingers so I can easily pull it back towards me. When It was a mere centimeter away from his eyeball, I pulled it back. I watched him stumble in fear as his family rushed to assist him.  “Are you crazy?! You could have hit him!” screamed his wife, I rolled my eyes. Why are they so dramatic? “But she didn’t. She showed her mastery, she deserves respect, yes?”  Cameron stated, Caius’s older brother. “That’s just a warning for your disrespect. There will be no next time.” Carim added, another brother dearest of Caius. “Don’t let her elegant dress and high heels fool you, she’s just as deadly as us, even more when she wanted to be.”  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I, the pilot, a woman on a mission, is wearing a long silk red dress with a high slit and high heels. There’s nothing that could feed my ego more than taking down men a couple of pegs while being an elegant, classy yet deadly woman. The epitome of grace. “We’re wasting time, shall we get inside? Yeah, we should. Let’s go.” I didn’t wait for their reply and trotted inside their mansion, I walked like I owned the place, I could feel their men’s eyes staring at me as I walked past them/ Damn, I could kill their master and still be able to look innocent on their eyes, interesting. They obviously lack training. What a disappointment.
