CHAPTER 11: THE PRINCESS THEY FEARED

1099 Words
Lyra's POV Fear has a scent. Before that night, I would have said it smelled like sweat or blood. I was wrong. Fear smelled like cold iron after rain. Like damp leaves crushed beneath trembling feet. Like the silence that settles over a forest moments before a predator steps into the light. I couldn't breathe. Alpha Magnus Dreadmoor stood at the edge of the clearing, his massive frame almost blending into the darkness. He wasn't the largest man I'd ever seen—that title still belonged to Kael—but there was something about him that made the night itself seem to recoil. His amber eyes found mine. They didn't wander. They didn't question. They recognized me. My fingers instinctively closed around the silver pendant hanging from my neck. It felt warmer than before, pulsing softly against my skin. Princess. The word echoed inside my mind. I hated it. I didn't know this man. I wasn't a princess. I was Lyra Ashwood. A healer. An orphan. A rejected mate. Nothing more. Nothing less. Or at least... That's who I had believed I was. Magnus smiled. It wasn't wide. It wasn't cruel. Somehow, that made it even worse. It was the smile of someone who had finally recovered something he'd spent years searching for. "So," he said, his deep voice carrying effortlessly through the clearing, "the Moon Seal chose to awaken after all." No one answered. The rain had stopped completely. Tiny droplets clung to the pine needles overhead, occasionally falling to the forest floor with soft, rhythmic taps. I became painfully aware of every sound. Kael's steady breathing. Orion's labored breaths behind me. The nervous shifting of the Shadow Fang warriors. Even my own heartbeat seemed deafening. Magnus took another step forward. His polished black boots sank slightly into the damp earth. "I've imagined this meeting many times." His gaze never left my face. "I expected you to resemble your mother." Something inside me tightened. The image from the vision flashed before my eyes. Silver hair. Gentle eyes. A kiss pressed against a baby's forehead. Live enough for all of us. I swallowed hard. "You knew her." It wasn't a question. Magnus's smile deepened. "I knew both of your parents." My stomach churned. Every instinct screamed at me not to believe anything he said. But another part of me... The part desperate for answers... Needed him to keep talking. "What happened to them?" The question escaped before I could stop it. Kael immediately looked at me. "Lyra." A warning. I ignored it. Magnus sighed almost wistfully. "They were extraordinary leaders." His tone sounded almost respectful. "They inspired loyalty." "Hope." "They believed wolves from every pack could live without endless war." His expression hardened. "It was a beautiful dream." The forest grew colder. "And dreams," he continued softly, "have a habit of getting people killed." I felt sick. "You murdered them." Silence. Then— "I ended a dynasty." The words struck harder than any confession. No remorse. No regret. Only certainty. Heat surged through my body. Anger. Hotter than anything I'd ever felt before. "You took everything from me." For the first time, Magnus looked almost amused. "No." He tilted his head. "I gave you something." Confusion flickered through me. "What?" "A reason." His eyes darkened. "To become stronger." I stared at him in disbelief. How could someone speak so calmly about destroying an entire family? About slaughtering innocent people? Kael stepped forward. "That's enough." Magnus finally shifted his attention. The two Alphas stood facing one another, powerful men separated by only a few yards of wet earth. One ruled through duty. The other through fear. "You've grown," Magnus observed. Kael's expression remained unreadable. "You've grown old." Several Shadow Fang warriors lowered their heads, hiding reluctant smiles. Magnus laughed. A deep, genuine laugh. "I've missed your tongue." "I can't say the same." The air between them crackled with tension. Magnus folded his hands behind his back. "You crossed into my territory." "I followed men trying to murder someone under my protection." "You rejected her." The words sliced through the clearing. Magnus looked toward me again. "Interesting choice." My chest tightened. Kael didn't answer. Magnus noticed. "So..." His voice turned thoughtful. "You rejected the last heir of the Moon Guardians." He chuckled. "If your ancestors could see you now." Every pair of eyes turned toward Kael. Even I looked. His jaw flexed. His shoulders remained straight. But I saw the guilt. It lingered behind those familiar blue eyes like a shadow that refused to leave. For reasons I couldn't explain... That hurt almost as much as the rejection itself. Because guilt didn't change what he'd done. It didn't erase the humiliation. Or the sleepless nights I knew were still waiting for me. Magnus slowly raised one hand. His warriors straightened immediately. "I'm offering you one chance." He looked directly at Kael. "Leave." Kael didn't move. "Take your wounded." "Take your pride." "But the girl..." His gaze settled on me once more. "...comes with me." A wave of nausea rolled through me. "No." The word left my lips before fear could stop it. Magnus looked almost disappointed. "You don't understand." "I understand enough." My voice trembled, but I forced myself to continue. "I'm not going anywhere with the man who murdered my family." His eyes softened. Almost kindly. "Your parents filled your future with enemies." "I can remove them." "I don't want your help." "You will." His confidence terrified me. It wasn't arrogance. It was certainty. As though he'd already seen the ending of this story. Kael moved until he stood beside me. Not touching. Not close enough for our shoulders to brush. Just... Near. "I said no." His voice was quiet. But the authority in it made even the trees seem to listen. Magnus sighed. "I was hoping you'd choose wisdom." He lowered his hand. The gesture was small. Almost lazy. The effect was immediate. Hundreds of wolves howled at once. The sound rolled across the mountains like thunder. My blood froze. Hundreds? I turned slowly. Glowing eyes appeared between the trees. Not dozens. Not even scores. Hundreds. They poured from the darkness like a living tide, surrounding the clearing from every direction. My breath caught in my throat. Kael's warriors weren't here. It was only Kael. Orion. Me. Against an army. Orion's voice came as a whisper beside me. "They were never hunting us." I looked at him. His face had gone pale. "They were gathering." Magnus smiled one last time. Then he spoke the words that made my heart sink. "Now..." He spread his arms. "...the real hunt begins."
