CHAPTER 1: THE MOON'S CHOICE
Lyra's POV
The first time I noticed something was different about tonight was the silence.
Not the kind that came with peace.
The kind that settled over the forest just before a storm broke.
Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
I stood at the edge of Silver Crest's sacred clearing, my fingers wrapped tightly around the woven basket hanging from my arm. The scent of crushed lavender, moon lilies, and fresh sage drifted upward, soothing the anxious flutter in my stomach. Elder Selene had asked me to prepare the ceremonial herbs before sunset, and if there was one thing I could always rely on, it was the comfort of familiar scents.
Herbs never judged.
People did.
The clearing glowed beneath hundreds of lanterns carved from white oak, their golden light dancing across ancient trees whose branches stretched toward the enormous full moon above. Colorful banners bearing the Silver Crest emblem fluttered lazily in the cool mountain breeze.
Laughter echoed through the gathering.
Children chased one another between the bonfires.
Older wolves exchanged stories while the warriors stood proudly in polished leather armor, pretending they weren't just as nervous as everyone else.
Tonight was the Moon Bond Ceremony.
The night the Moon Goddess revealed the fated mates of every unmated wolf who had reached adulthood.
For most people, it was the happiest night of their lives.
For me...
I wasn't sure.
I adjusted the silver pendant resting against my chest, rubbing my thumb across its smooth surface out of habit. I had worn it for as long as I could remember. My mother had once told me it had been around my neck the night my parents found me crying alone in the Forbidden Forest.
No one knew where it came from.
No one knew who had left me there.
Sometimes I wondered if someone, somewhere, still remembered the little girl they had abandoned beneath the moon.
"Lyra!"
I looked up just as Mira barreled toward me, nearly knocking the basket from my hands.
"There you are!" she exclaimed, looping her arm through mine. "I've been looking everywhere."
I laughed despite myself.
"You've been looking for me in all the wrong places."
She rolled her eyes dramatically.
"I checked the healer's hut, the herb garden, the river..."
"You didn't check the forest."
"You always hide in the forest."
"I don't hide."
"You absolutely hide."
I smiled, shaking my head.
Mira had a way of pulling laughter from me even on days when I didn't think I had any left.
She glanced around before leaning closer.
"So..."
I knew that look.
"What?"
"Do you think you'll find your mate tonight?"
Heat crept into my cheeks.
"I don't know."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
She groaned.
"You're impossible."
"No," I teased. "You're impatient."
She nudged my shoulder.
"If your mate turns out to be some handsome warrior, I'm taking full credit for manifesting him."
"And if he's unbearable?"
"Then I'll pretend I never said anything."
I laughed, the sound carried away by the breeze.
For a moment...
Everything felt normal.
Safe.
Then the horns sounded.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The conversations around us faded instantly.
Every wolf turned toward the stone platform at the center of the clearing.
Alpha Kael Blackthorn had arrived.
I had seen him countless times before, but never this close.
He moved through the crowd with quiet authority, dressed in a black ceremonial tunic embroidered with silver thread. His dark hair stirred gently in the wind, and the moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face. There was something almost untouchable about him—as if he belonged more to the mountains than to the people standing before him.
No one spoke as he passed.
Warriors lowered their heads.
Children stopped playing.
Even the air felt heavier.
Alpha Kael didn't need to demand respect.
He simply existed, and it followed him.
His icy blue eyes swept over the gathering, calm and unreadable.
For the briefest second...
They met mine.
It couldn't have lasted more than a heartbeat.
Yet something strange stirred inside me.
A warmth spread through my chest.
My pulse skipped.
Then he looked away as though nothing had happened.
I frowned.
That was... odd.
Before I could think more about it, Elder Selene stepped onto the platform, her silver robes shimmering beneath the moonlight.
"My children," she called, her voice carrying effortlessly across the clearing.
"Tonight, the Moon Goddess reminds us that no soul walks alone forever. Every bond she creates carries purpose. Some will bring peace. Others will bring trials. But every bond is sacred."
The crowd fell into complete silence.
The bonfires crackled softly.
Somewhere in the forest, a lone wolf howled.
My heartbeat quickened.
One by one, wolves stepped forward as their names were called.
Some laughed in disbelief as they found their mates.
Others cried tears of joy.
Families embraced.
Friends cheered.
The clearing overflowed with happiness.
I smiled for them.
Even if a small part of me wondered whether fate had forgotten me.
Then Elder Selene lifted the ancient Moon Stone into the air.
Its silver glow brightened until the entire clearing shimmered beneath its light.
She closed her eyes.
The wind rose suddenly, swirling around us.
Leaves danced across the ground.
The Moon Stone pulsed once.
Twice.
Then Elder Selene opened her eyes.
"Lyra Ashwood."
My breath caught.
Every face turned toward me.
My legs felt strangely numb as I stepped into the center of the clearing, my heartbeat roaring louder than the wind.
The Moon Stone glowed brighter.
A silver thread of light stretched from it...
Straight toward me.
Then it turned.
And reached for someone else.
I followed its path with trembling eyes.
It stopped in front of the last man I ever expected.
Alpha Kael Blackthorn.
The world around me disappeared.
The cheering.
The music.
The voices.
Everything faded into silence.
Only the bond remained.
And the Alpha staring back at me with an expression I couldn't understand.
