CHAPTER 12: THE PRICE OF A PROMISE

983 Words
Kael's POV There are moments when an Alpha has to make a choice. Not between right and wrong. Those choices are rare. Most of the time, it's between two disasters. I looked at the wolves surrounding us. Too many. At least two hundred. Maybe more. Their eyes glowed through the darkness like scattered embers, their low growls vibrating through the soaked earth beneath my boots. The smell of wet fur, rain, and fresh blood hung heavily in the air. This wasn't an ambush. It was an execution. Magnus had planned every detail. He wanted me trapped. Outnumbered. Forced to choose between my own life and hers. My wolf paced violently inside me. Take our mate. Run. I clenched my jaw. Mate. The word still cut deeper than any blade. Because I had rejected her. Yet here I was, willing to die before letting anyone lay a hand on her. The irony wasn't lost on me. Magnus folded his hands behind his back, looking more like a king receiving guests than a man commanding an army. "You've always been intelligent, Kael." His voice was calm. "So don't insult both of us by pretending you can win." I didn't answer. Instead, I studied the terrain. The clearing was narrow. Dense pines boxed us in from three sides. Behind Lyra, the ground sloped sharply toward a rushing river. I could hear the water crashing over rocks somewhere below, though I couldn't see it through the darkness. One escape route. Dangerous. But possible. Cedric would've noticed it immediately. The thought of my Beta tightened something inside my chest. He was probably tearing Silver Crest apart looking for me by now. I hadn't even left orders before chasing Lyra into the forest. For the first time since becoming Alpha... I had abandoned my pack. Because the one person I had pushed away needed me. Life had a cruel sense of humor. Magnus noticed my eyes moving. "Planning?" "Always." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Good." He gestured toward Lyra. "Hand her over, and you leave alive." My laugh surprised even me. It was short. Humorless. "You don't know me at all." "No?" "You think I'd trade an innocent life for my own?" The smile disappeared from his face. "I think you already did." Silence. The words landed exactly where he'd intended. My rejection. My greatest mistake. The wound I'd carved into Lyra's heart. He was using it against me. I looked at her. She stood only a few feet away, her silver pendant glowing faintly beneath the collar of her cloak. There was dried mud on her cheek. A strand of dark hair clung to her face from the rain. She looked exhausted. Frightened. But she hadn't broken. Even after everything she'd learned tonight... She was still standing. I remembered the ceremony. The way she'd held my gaze. Most wolves would have looked away from an Alpha. Lyra never did. Not even while I shattered her heart. The memory made my stomach twist. I didn't deserve another chance. I knew that. But if the Moon Goddess gave me enough time... I'd spend the rest of my life trying to earn one. "Kael." Her voice pulled me back. Soft. Uncertain. I turned toward her. Our eyes met. "What happens now?" The question wasn't just about Magnus. It wasn't just about the army surrounding us. It was about everything. Us. The bond. The future. I wished I had an answer. Instead, I said the only truthful thing. "I won't let them take you." She searched my face for several seconds. As if trying to decide whether she could believe me. She looked away first. The disappointment hurt more than I expected. Because I had put it there. Orion stepped closer, his injured shoulder bleeding steadily despite the cloth wrapped around it. "They're buying time." I frowned. "For what?" Before he could answer... A deep horn echoed through the forest. Once. Twice. Then a third time. Every Shadow Fang wolf immediately lowered their heads. Magnus smiled. "Perfect timing." The ground began to tremble. Not from wolves. From horses. Dozens of them. The sound grew louder until riders burst through the trees, black cloaks billowing behind them. Unlike the wolves, these men wore silver armor engraved with a crescent moon split cleanly down the center. Their discipline was unsettling. No one spoke. No one looked around. Each rider halted with mechanical precision. The man at their front removed his helmet. He couldn't have been much older than me. Golden hair. Sharp green eyes. A long scar crossed the bridge of his nose. His gaze swept across the clearing before settling on Lyra. Then... To my complete surprise... He climbed down from his horse, walked straight toward her, and dropped to one knee. "My Queen," he said, bowing his head. The entire forest fell silent. One by one... Every rider behind him followed. Steel clinked against stone as dozens of armored warriors knelt in unison. Lyra stared at them, her lips parting in shock. "I think..." Her voice barely rose above a whisper. "...you've mistaken me for someone else." The young commander looked up. There was absolute conviction in his eyes. "We have searched for you for twenty-two years." He placed a closed fist over his heart. "I am Rowan Nightshade." "Commander of the Moon Guard." "My life..." He lowered his head again. "...belongs to you." I felt Lyra's breath catch beside me. Then something happened that I wasn't prepared for. The broken mate bond inside my chest pulsed painfully. Not because of Magnus. Not because of the danger. But because when Rowan looked at Lyra... There was unmistakable admiration in his eyes. My wolf snarled. Mine. I shut my eyes for the briefest moment. No. I had surrendered the right to think that way the night I rejected her. And somehow... Accepting that truth hurt more than anything else I'd endured.
