Lyra's POV
If someone had told me yesterday that warriors would kneel before me in the middle of a rain-soaked forest and call me their queen, I would have laughed.
Today...
I couldn't even find my voice.
The forest was so quiet that I could hear the rain dripping from the pine branches overhead. A cool breeze brushed against my damp face, carrying the scent of wet earth and woodsmoke. My fingers had gone numb around the silver pendant resting against my chest, but I barely noticed.
Everyone was looking at me.
Rowan remained on one knee, his head bowed in unwavering respect.
Behind him, dozens of armored warriors mirrored his posture without hesitation.
Even Magnus had fallen silent.
The only sound was my own heartbeat, loud and uneven in my ears.
"I..."
The word caught in my throat.
"I can't be your queen."
Rowan slowly lifted his head.
"You already are."
I shook mine.
"No."
"I don't even know who I am anymore."
That was the truth.
Twenty-four hours ago, I knew exactly where my life was headed.
I would spend my days tending to sick children, gathering herbs before sunrise, helping elderly wolves through the harsh winters, and pretending my heart didn't ache whenever Alpha Kael walked past me.
Simple.
Ordinary.
Now I was standing between two armies while strangers fought over a title I had never wanted.
Princess.
Queen.
Guardian.
None of those names felt like mine.
"I'm Lyra Ashwood," I whispered.
"My parents were Thomas and Evelyn."
Emotion flickered across Rowan's face.
"They raised you with love."
"Then they are my parents."
His eyes softened.
"No one here would ever take that from you."
Something in his voice eased the tightness in my chest.
He wasn't trying to erase my past.
He was acknowledging it.
"I don't understand any of this," I admitted.
"I know."
"You keep calling me Your Majesty."
"I've spent my entire life preparing for this moment."
He smiled sadly.
"You've spent yours surviving it."
For a second...
I saw no soldier.
No commander.
Just a man who had carried hope for longer than hope should have survived.
Magnus broke the silence with a slow clap.
"Touching."
His smile was sharp enough to cut.
"Have we finished this sentimental reunion?"
Rowan rose smoothly to his feet.
The warmth disappeared from his expression.
When he faced Magnus, his entire posture changed.
His shoulders straightened.
His jaw hardened.
His voice became cold enough to freeze the air.
"You should have stayed in your territory."
Magnus laughed.
"You should have stayed dead."
The two men stared at one another.
There was history between them.
Painful history.
"You know each other," I said quietly.
Neither answered immediately.
Finally, Rowan spoke without taking his eyes off Magnus.
"I was sixteen when he destroyed the royal sanctuary."
A lump formed in my throat.
"I survived because Captain Orion forced me through the escape tunnels."
My eyes darted toward Orion.
The older warrior's face remained unreadable.
Only the tightening of his grip around his sword betrayed his emotions.
"I wanted to go back," Rowan continued.
"I wanted to fight."
"I wasn't strong enough."
His voice cracked on the final sentence.
"I watched my home burn from the mountains."
The confession hung heavily in the air.
I understood that kind of guilt.
Not because I'd lived it.
Because I'd lived with different regrets.
Not saying goodbye to my parents before they died.
Never telling Kael how deeply I loved him before fate spoke for us.
Now...
There were too many things I wished I could change.
Magnus rolled his shoulders lazily.
"Your speeches have improved."
"I've had twenty-two years to prepare."
"And yet..."
Magnus looked directly at me.
"...you're still too late."
The words made my stomach tighten.
"What do you mean?"
His smile widened.
"You think I spent two decades searching without making plans?"
Cold crept beneath my skin.
Something about the confidence in his voice unsettled me.
He wasn't bluffing.
He had something.
Or someone.
Before I could ask, Orion suddenly grabbed my arm.
His fingers tightened just enough to pull my attention away from Magnus.
"Lyra."
His voice was low.
Urgent.
"Listen carefully."
I nodded.
"No matter what happens..."
His weathered eyes searched mine.
"...don't let anyone remove that pendant."
I instinctively covered it with my hand.
"Why?"
"It isn't just protecting you anymore."
His gaze flickered briefly toward Rowan.
"You're protecting all of us."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
"You will."
His answer frustrated me more than it reassured me.
Everyone kept speaking in riddles.
Everyone expected me to accept impossible truths without explanation.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
Anger bubbled to the surface.
"I'm tired of people telling me I'll understand later!"
My voice echoed through the clearing.
Several warriors looked startled.
"So tell me now!"
I looked at Orion.
Then Rowan.
Then Kael.
"I deserve the truth."
Silence.
No one argued.
Good.
"Who were my parents?"
"What is the Moon Seal?"
"Why am I being hunted?"
"What are the Moon Guardians?"
"And why does everyone keep acting like my entire life was decided before I was even born?"
The questions poured out faster than I could stop them.
Years of quiet obedience finally cracked.
"I've lost my family."
"My home."
"My future."
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"The least someone can do..."
My voice broke.
"...is stop hiding things from me."
For a long moment...
No one spoke.
Even Magnus watched quietly.
Finally...
Kael stepped forward.
His boots sank into the wet earth with each measured step.
He stopped several feet away, leaving enough distance that I wouldn't feel cornered.
"I owe you the truth."
I looked at him.
His blue eyes no longer carried the arrogance I'd once mistaken for strength.
Only regret.
Raw.
Unfiltered.
"I should have told you sooner."
A bitter laugh escaped me.
"Sooner?"
"I didn't even know there was something to tell."
He lowered his gaze briefly.
"No."
"You didn't."
When he looked back up, there was a vulnerability I'd never seen in him before.
"My father knew about the Moon Guardians."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
"He... what?"
"He made every Alpha swear an oath."
Kael's voice was steady, but I noticed the guilt tightening every syllable.
"If the last Guardian was ever found..."
He hesitated.
"...she was never to become Luna."
The world tilted.
I stared at him, unable to breathe.
The rejection.
It hadn't been about me.
Not entirely.
It had begun long before I was born.
Long before either of us had a choice.
A thousand questions crowded my mind—
But before I could ask a single one...
A piercing scream echoed from deep within the forest.
Every warrior turned toward the sound.
Then another scream followed.
Closer.
Filled with terror.
Rowan's face drained of color.
"No..."
One of his scouts burst through the trees, covered in blood and barely able to stand.
He collapsed to his knees.
"Commander..."
He coughed violently.
"They found..."
His breathing hitched.
"...the Sanctuary."
The blood drained from Orion's face.
Magnus smiled.
And in that moment...
I realized the night had only just begun.
