Chapter 12

My phone buzzed in my pocket. Lying down in my sleeping bag I looked at my screen.

Opening my messages was like waiting for rain in a drought.

William: hey babe how’s your night.

Me: it’s alright hard to explain its like nostalgia being out here.

William: its ok babe. You know I’m here for you. I love you xx

Me: I know bae I wish you could be here with me. I don’t know these people as much as I did when we were kids.

Me: we have all grown up and most of us have grown apart.

Me: you are my world bae. My life now.

William: babe you will be ok I promise you. I’m not leaving again. I’m here to stay this time.

William: I know your worried about me because of what happened the last time we were apart. I won’t let that happen again. I love you too much to see you in pain.

William: I can come out and see you now if you want. Meet me away from the camp. I’m on my way.

Me: r u sure bae I miss you so much

William: I’m sure babe I’m coming now just borrowing mate’s car.

Me: ok bae I’ll see you soon. Xxx

Climbing back out of my sleeping bag. I chucked a jumper on. Carefully unzipped my tent. Grabbed a drink from my esky phone in my pocket and headed out of camp. It didn’t take long to spot lights in the distance. William had pulled into the scrub and parked behind the biggest trees so he wouldn’t be spotted. I could smell his cologne before I seen him and melted into his embrace. My home was where he was and right now, I felt more alive in his arms than ever before. Reaching up to his face with one hand I pulled him closer to me and our lips melded together. I needed him more than anything else in that moment. More than I even realised. I loved this man. More than life itself. He opened the car door and we sat in the back of his mate’s car kissing each other with more fire with each stroke of our tongues entwined. With one hand resting on the back of his neck holding him deeper into our kiss. With the other I lowered it down to his waist. Picking it up I found the rest of my clothes and redressed. Lying back down in Williams arms I checked my message.

Unknown: I see you. I know what you’re doing.

Scared I cuddled into William.

Me: who is this

Waiting for a reply I hoped wouldn’t come. Dreading that my worry was all I could do not to yell I knew something was up. William looked at me and seen the fear in my eyes. Was he thinking the same thing? My phone buzzed again.

Unknown: Billie sleep with one eye open little sis I’m coming for you.

“William, can you take me home please. Please babe. I can’t stay out here. We can get my stuff and we can go. Or leave it Dad can come out and get it. I need to go home now. Mum and Dad need to know about this.” Pleading with him was all I could do to not fall apart right now. Billie hated me and I didn’t know why. Mum didn’t even know why. But right now, I needed my own room. My own walls of protection. William knew this too. He only had to see the darkness in my eyes to know I needed him more than ever. He knew what Billie was like and had protected me many times from him. He knew being out here I wasn’t safe and neither were my classmates if I stayed here.

We walked to my camp. Grabbed my bag and Dad’s esky leaving the tent up to come back in the daylight to retrieve it. Leaving camp and my first time in ages of being a normal teen we raced back to his mate’s car. Threw the gear in the back seat and took off back into town to home. The house was in darkness when we pulled up. William put the car in park and we climbed out. Walking up to the house I realised I didn’t have my key to get in. William seen me looking for it and pulled his set of keys out. Thankfully I had given him the one to open my door to my room so we didn’t have to sneak through the whole house.

We quietly went in through my room, dumping my bag and esky on the floor before going through the rest of the house. William went to his room “text me when you have finished with your parent’s babe. I’m here for you.” He whispered before giving me a quick kiss and entering his room. I walked through the rest of the house the faint sound of the television told me someone was up. Entering the second living room. Dad looked up.

“What’s wrong, kiddo? Thought you were out camping with the girls.”

“Hey Dad I was but I walked back into town. I got a text from Billie. Is Mum awake?”

“What do you mean you got a text from your brother. His in gaol...what you walked back to town. Soph that’s not smart.”

“Sorry Dad I got the text freaked out and left the girls his crazy he would hurt them too if I’d stayed there.” I showed Dad the message I’d moved Williams to a folder Dad couldn’t see. Before I knew what was happening Dad was out of his chair and out the living room. Minutes passed that felt like hours before Dad walked back into the room. Mum followed behind him. She looked worried.

“Mum, did you know he was out again?” I asked sceptically. Her face said all I had to know though. The worry from only hours ago made sense now. She didn’t want me here. Going away for a weekend with the girls was what she wanted. Why did she lie to me than? I thought to myself but I couldn’t say this to my mother could I. “Mum. Did you know he was released answer me please?” I asked again pleading for her to answer me. Hopefully honestly this time.

With bated breath I waited. The laughter fading from her eyes replaced with worry I knew only oh so much. It was the same look I had in my eyes whenever Billie was mentioned. His latest stint in prison was because of me. Mum walked in on him holding a knife at me while I slept. It was the final straw for her. She couldn’t cover him after that. I’d been able to stay at home only after he was placed in gaol.

Now he was out again. Fear was back in our home. Mum had to make some difficult choices. I could only pray it didn’t mean sending me off to stay with relatives or her friends this time. This was my home and I should be allowed to stay in it without Billie tearing this family apart. His excuses for Nan passing away and that’s why he was violent was running out very quickly. He hated me and I have never known why. He wasn’t horrible or deadly towards our younger brother Mark. Being the only girl sucked at times this was definitely one of those times. I wished I had somewhere else I could go.
