A few months later

“Sophie, can you please talk to me?” Mum asked me. She was persistent. I hadn’t spoken to her since I ran out of the house last school holidays, I’d been hiding out with William and his friend on and off since. I was only home now because Billie wasn’t there and I needed a few things from my room.

“Mum, why should I talk to you. I mean you picked Billie over me. You told me to stay away from the house, you made me stay with Delores knowing full well that her and I don’t get along. You kicked William out of the house because he actually cares about me. Dad, well he just let it all happen. You never stick up for me even when Dad is drunk and wants to belt me for no reason and I have to barricade myself in my room until he sobers up. I’ll talk to you when you start putting me first.” I thought of saying to her but instead I just ignored her and walked back out the door, backpack over my shoulder and jumped into Williams car.

I leaned over and kissed him. “Drive babe before they try to follow me.”

He looked at me seeing the sadness in my eyes. In that day I lost everything. With him beside me though I was on top of the world. We drove all night pulling up at a motel that was miles away from home. Safe in the arms of the man I loved. Walking into the reception to get our room was like walking on a cloud. I felt like we were in heaven. After booking our room, collecting our things from the car, we entered this quaint motel room, walls whiter than a doctor’s coat. The bathroom was these pale pink tiles complete contrast to the white walls. I pulled William to me and kissed him with more passion than I ever have before.

We lay in that hotel room until it was time to get up and get back on the road. Travelling and hiding my morning sickness for now was hard but I needed the right time to tell him. He reached over to me and placed a hand on my stomach before we got up. “Sophie are you alright babe. You look pale.” He asked sweetly.

“Yeh babe I’m ok. Just feeling a little queasy. I need to tell you something.”

“Babe, I think I know what it is. I felt the difference last night, your pregnant, aren’t you?” he continued a small smile hidden behind his question.

“Babe, yes I only just found out, I was waiting for the right time to tell you.” Waiting with bated breath his silence was deafening. In that moment it was like my whole world was crashing before me. I hadn’t even told anyone else I was pregnant to him. Yesterday’s fight with my family was still raw and they would have kicked me out as soon as they found out about a baby. Dad definitely would have lost it at me. That wasn’t the life our child deserved.

“Babe...are you sure?” he whispered to me in shock.

I reached into my bag and pulled out the test I took two days ago two lines showing up on that small stick. I had a spare unused test in my bag. I’d gotten them in a set the last time I was in town on my own. Handing him the test to see his golden eyes began to form tears. A rare site for this strong man. Fearing what they were I sat there silently for a little bit longer. What felt like eternity before any of us spoke the silence was awkward.

“Babe, I have an extra test here we can do it now together if you want.”

“Soph, is this what you want babe, what you really want,” he began, “we can take a test together but I want to know sweetheart is this what you want, a family with me.”

Leaning into him I kissed him. Climbing on top of him deepening my kiss. One hand on the back of his neck pulling him up closer to me. His hard on resting on the edge of my core. Water and a little bit of fizzy was the only thing keeping the morning sickness at bay. ‘Babe you ok, I can order room service tonight if you’re not up to going out.’ He gently opened the door. My head in the bowl one hand resting on the bowl the other holding my hair back. He handed me a small glass of water and rubbed my back for me. We'd taken the second test at one of the many stops between Peak Hill and here. His happiness at seeing those two lines appear will be a memory etched in my mind forever.
