Chapter 8

1460 Words
SAVANNA The second the door clicked shut behind Kaden, the shame hit me like a physical blow. I was frozen on the bed with my thighs still trembling and the sheets damp beneath me from what we had just done. My father-in-law’s fingers. His voice. The way he had ordered me to come and I had obeyed like I belonged to him. My own husband’s father. What have I done? I scrambled off the bed with my shaking legs, and locked myself in the bathroom. The mirror showed a stranger- flushed cheeks, swollen lips, eyes glassy with leftover lust and rising horror. I couldn’t believe myself. I scrubbed my skin raw under cold rough water, as if I could wash the memory of his touch away. But every time I closed my eyes I felt him again- the weight of his hand between my legs and the low growl when I begged for more. I had committed a crime. Not just against my husband, who was still missing, but against everything I thought I was. The good wife. The restrained girl who never let herself want too much. Now the evidence of my betrayal was still slick between my thighs. —— That night, I didn’t sleep. I couldn’t. I just kept staring at the ceiling in the dark. My heart kept pounding every time the house creaked, terrified Kaden would come back- or worse, that he wouldn’t and I would have to face him in the morning like nothing had happened. Guilt sat heavy in my chest and I tried to forget everything but failed miserably. “Please Christian, come back-“ I whimpered and sobbed into the pillow. I felt so awful and disgusted and just hoped this all would be a nightmare. By dawn my eyes were red and swollen. I looked wrecked with dark circles under my eyes, pale skin and hair tangled from restless tossing. The guilt had stolen every trace of my rest. Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. Edward: Sav. I know it’s early, but I’ve been thinking about you all night. Can we meet today? Edward: Just coffee or a drink. Whatever you need. I’m worried about you. I stared at the message until the words blurred. Meeting Edward felt dangerous after last night, but staying in this house- where Kaden’s scent still lingered in the hallway… somehow felt worse. I needed distance… or something that wasn’t pure shame because I couldn't face him. Not yet… so, I texted back with shaking fingers. Me: Okay. Somewhere quiet. This afternoon. The day dragged on. I avoided the kitchen, the living room and every place Kaden might appear. I just stayed in my room not having the motivation to get out and waited till It was the time to meet Edward. —— Edward chose a small rooftop bar with soft lighting. The city stretched below us that was distant and glittering which somehow felt peaceful. I stepped into the place and he stood up, eyes widening the moment he saw my face. “Savanna…” He stepped forward, concern written all over him. “Jesus. You look like you haven’t slept in days. What happened?” I forced a smile that felt like it cracked my face. Oh god- it was our first meeting after years and that’s what he asks- “Just… everything. Christian. The pack. Haze. It’s a lot.” He guided me to a secluded corner table, ordering two glasses of wine without asking and I didn’t argue. The first sip burned, but it loosened something tight in my chest and I could feel his careful eyes on me. “Talk to me. You look disturbed. Haunted, almost. Did something happen last night?” My stomach twisted instantly and- Last night- Kaden’s fingers, my shameful begging- everything came crashing upon me. I looked down at my glass, voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t want to talk about last night. Please. Just… let’s talk about something else.” He stared for a good few seconds clearly worried but nodded slowly, respect softening his expression. “Alright. No pressure. How about we remember the good days instead? Before everything got complicated.” I let out a shaky breath. “Okay.” And then we talked for hours. The wine kept coming. Edward reminded me of the night we snuck onto the school roof during our first Haze flare, laughing as we tried to keep quiet while the city lights blurred. He brought up the time I cried after the mean girls mocked my curves, and how he had kissed every tear away and told me I was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. I found myself smiling- like real smiles, for the first time in days. “You used to blush so hard whenever I touched you,” he said softly, eyes warm. “Remember? You’d hide your face against my neck and whisper that you felt too big, too much. And I’d tell you I loved every soft inch.” My cheeks heated. “I remember. You made me feel… safe. Wanted.” “I still do,” he said quietly but it was audible. The air between us shifted. The nostalgia wrapped around us like a warm blanket, pulling us closer without either of us moving. I felt Edward’s knee brushed mine under the table and his hand rested near mine on the wood, close enough that I could feel the heat of his skin. He studied my face again, gentler this time. “You’re exhausted, Sav. Really. When was the last time someone took care of you? Not the pack, not the role of Christian’s wife- but…just you?” Tears stung my eyes. I agreed too because I looked- and felt so awful. “I don’t know. Everything feels like it’s falling apart. I keep trying to be strong, but I’m so tired of pretending I’m fine.” Edward reached across the table and took my hand in his and stroked slow circles over my knuckles, the same way he used to when we were teenagers. “You don’t have to pretend with me. Never did.” The emotional support I needed- grew thick and dangerous and I found myself leaning in without meaning to. My heart raced as I watched his gaze drop to my mouth and mine dropped to his. The years of history, the shared memories and the comfort of someone who had once known every secret part of me- it all crashed together. And we….. almost kissed. His face was so close I could feel his breath. My heart hammered with a different kind of guilt, a different kind of want. For one suspended second I almost let it happen. I had forgotten last night- the guilt, shame everything but…. Then the image of Christian’s face flashed through my mind- followed immediately by Kaden’s hands on my body- and horror slammed into me so hard that I jerked backward. Tears spilled over. “I can’t. God, I can’t.” My voice broke. “I almost… again. I almost betrayed him again. What’s wrong with me?” Edward immediately pulled back, hands raised in surrender. “Hey. Look at me. It’s okay. I won’t pressure you.” “Relax Sav. Not now, not ever. I understand, you’re going through hell, Savanna. I’m not going to make it worse.” I covered my face with both hands, letting my tears fall. “I feel like I’m losing myself. Everything is so messed up.” He stood, moved around the table, and gently guided me to my feet. “Come on. I’m taking you home. No more talking if you don’t want to. Just rest.” I managed to make it to the car with his help. The drive was quiet. Edward kept his eyes on the road, one hand steady on the wheel and the other resting carefully on the seat between us- close enough to offer comfort, far enough not to push. When we reached the villa, he walked me to the door but didn’t try to come inside. “Get some sleep,” he said softly. “Text me if you need anything. Even if it’s just to talk about the weather. I’m here, Sav.” His words sounded too good and I nodded. My throat was too tight for words, and just slipped inside. I closed the door behind me and rested my back against it, feeling so overwhelmed with everything. The house was dark and silent. Kaden’s presence still lingered in the air like a ghost. My mind was so messy and throbbing with pain and….. Guilt from last night with Kaden. Guilt from almost kissing Edward tonight.
