Chapter 9

SAVANNA I leaned back against the front door the second it closed and shut my eyes, trying to breathe through the mess of guilt still sitting in my chest from the almost-kiss with Edward. It was just one meetup. One conversation. One near mistake and already I felt like I was unraveling. Before I could compose myself, I didn’t expect his deep, furious voice that cut through the quiet. “Where the hell have you been?” My eyes snapped open. Kaden was standing at the end of the hallway, looking furious. His arms were crossed over his broad chest and face carved from stone. The low light of the villa made the silver at his temples sharper and the hard line of his jaw more severe. He looked every bit the alpha who ran an entire MC pack — and every bit the man whose fingers had been inside me the night before. My heart thudded and cheeks burned at the single thought from that night. My stomach dropped. “I-” My voice came out thin. “I went out for a bit.” “Without telling me.” He didn’t raise his voice much, but the stern edge in it made me feel small instantly, like a child being scolded. Or worse- like a wife who had already betrayed her husband and was now lying to his father. “I told you clearly. You report to me when you leave this house. Especially now.” He walked closer and the more he came close, the harder I pressed my back against the door with my pounding heart. “I’m sorry. I just needed air. It was a long day.” “Look at me when I’m talking to you.” The order landed like a hand around my throat. I lifted my gaze slowly and could feel my cheeks burning. His dark eyes locked on mine, searching. He took two slow steps forward. Then another and the distance between us shrank until I could smell him. The manly- masculine leather, pine and pure dominant alpha. The same scent that had clung to my skin last night and a soft gasp slipped out of me before I could stop it. Tension crackled in the air and it made me shrunk even more. He stopped close enough that I had to tilt my head up. I was nowhere near his height and the position felt incredibly… hot that my body started to heat up. His jaw flexed once, like he was holding something back. I couldn’t even look at him without remembering the way he had growled against my mouth and the way his fingers had curled inside me until I came hard and messy. Shame flooded my face which made me drop my eyes again. “Something’s different,” he said quietly, almost to himself. Then sharper, “Where were you really, Savanna?” My pulse spiked. I could feel the heat rising in my neck. Did he smell Edward on me? He must have because he never questioned me. He never bothered…. But did he catch me lying? The thought made my stomach twist with panic. “I met Lila,” I lied, the words tumbling out too fast. “My friend. We just talked. Caught up. That’s all.” He stared at me for a long, heavy second. His nostrils flared slightly and suspicion sat clear in his expression, but he didn’t call me out. Not yet. Instead he exhaled through his nose, a low sound of frustration, and stepped back half a pace- as if putting distance between us was the only way to keep control. “About last night, you don't need to feel ashamed or embarrassed. I helped you last night because I know how brutal Haze can be,” he said, voice rough. “ Especially when you’re alone and already carrying too much. That was it. An alpha making sure his son’s wife didn’t suffer more than she had to. Nothing more.” The words landed harder than I expected. Nothing more. Just duty, family obligation. Just an alpha taking care of a problem. My chest tightened. Of course that was all it was for him. I had been the desperate one, the one who had begged, the one who had held his wrist and pleaded for more. He had only given what was necessary and then walked away and that reminder made the shame burn hotter. “I understand,” I whispered, trying to hold my ground and not wanting him to see tears that had gathered in my eyes. He studied me a moment longer, then gave a short nod. “Go rest. You look exhausted.” I didn’t wait. “I’ve already eaten. I’m going to sleep.” The excuse was thin, but I didn’t care. I slipped past him quickly, careful not to brush against his body, and hurried up the stairs before he could say anything else. My bedroom door closed with a soft click. I leaned against it again, this time in private, and pressed both hands over my face. My heart was still racing. Facing Kaden after last night had been worse than I imagined. The way he looked at me, the way his scent still affected me and the way I had lied so easily- it all made me feel dirty and small and terrified of what I was becoming. I changed into a soft sleep shirt and climbed into bed, but there was no amount of sleep in my eyes. My mind kept replaying both nights- Kaden’s hands and Edward’s almost-kiss. I whined and rolled over from one side of bed to another until my phone suddenly buzzed on the nightstand. Edward’s name lit up the screen. I hesitated, then answered. “Savanna?” His voice was warm and concerned. “I just wanted to check if you got home okay. You seemed really shaken when I dropped you off.” I curled onto my side with the phone pressed to my ear. “I’m fine. Just tired.” “You don’t sound fine.” A soft pause. “How’s the Haze treating you tonight?” The question made heat flicker low in my belly despite everything. Being asked about haze felt so embarrassing. “It’s… manageable. For now.” “Good.” His voice dropped a little, gentler. “Listen. I’ve been thinking about what you said earlier- about not wanting to betray Christian. I hear you. I’m not asking for a title. I am not asking for a relationship and not even a promise.” His words sent chills down my spine. “I just want to help you get through this heat season without it destroying you. Safely. In whatever way you need.” I closed my eyes. The offer was so straightforward it almost hurt. “We can keep everything quiet,” he continued. “No one has to know. Not the pack, not your father-in-law. Not anyone. You set the boundaries and I follow them. I only want to take care of you while you’re hurting.” His words settled into the hollow place inside me that had been aching for days. He made it sound simple. Practical. Kind. And that terrified me more than if he had demanded something in return. Feeling understood by Edward after everything that had happened with Kaden made the guilt twist sharper. “I don’t know what to say,” I whispered. “You don’t have to say anything tonight.” His tone stayed soft, patient. “Think about it and rest. I’ll wait. Whenever you’re ready- or if you decide you never are, I’ll still be here if you need a friend. That’s all.” The line went quiet for a second. “Get some rest, Savanna. You sound like you need it.” He hung up before I could answer. I stared at the dark ceiling, phone still warm in my hand. I was torn in two directions, drowning in guilt and anxiety, terrified that one wrong breath would make Kaden notice the new cracks forming in me. And the worst part was that part of me was already considering it.
