Chapter 9 A Name Without A Past

My eyes were misty when I glanced around, half wishing I would see Max come striding down the hall. I needed to find him, and fast. Only he could have a faint idea of what was going on. A shiver passed through me at the thought of all the recent incidents in town; ‘all those incidents couldn't have been accidental’ I thought. “You look worried,” Evelyn's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “What's the matter?” She asked, staring at me. “I…” I paused, not quite sure what to say or to be more exact, not quite sure what excuse was best for right now. “It's nothing,” I muttered weakly. “Are you done with that row?” I asked, changing the conversation. “Yes,” Evelyn stared at me measuredly, I could tell she wasn't buying anything I'd just said. “Let's go,” she finally said, after the silence had dragged on for a while. “Yes,” I nodded, secretly heaving a sigh of relief. We'd just turned round the corner when I spotted Jason coming out of one of the wards. ‘He was here?’ My eyes widened slightly and a wave of unease crashed into me. I'd rushed out after him but I hadn’t thought of what to say to him. Was I supposed to tell him something like; “Hey Jason, sorry about what you happened to see back there between me and Max, he's a werewolf and I think he's my mate.” I couldn’t say that. “Jason, you're here?” Evelyn appeared, dragging Jason's attention here. My heart lurched in my chest when his eyes met mine, he held my gaze for a split second before he glanced away. “Yes,” he nodded, adjusting the stethoscope hanging on his neck. “I just finished with this row,” he explained, he didn’t look in my direction as he spoke. “That's good then,” Evelyn nodded, oblivious to the tension between us. “I'm done with that wing,” she turned to leave. “Come, Sophie,” she said, giving me a meaningful look. “I need your help with something.” “Okay,” I nodded, but I remained rooted to the spot, Evelyn flashed me a strange look but she walked away, leaving me and Jason. For a moment we just stood there, silence lingering between us. I couldn’t take it anymore. “Jason,” I began, my mind racing with thoughts. “I…” “Oh it's fine,” Jason chuckled, his lips spreading into a wide grin and he beamed at me. “It's nothing if anything I should apologize for walking in on you,” he chuckled but I spotted the dark light that flashed past his eyes. “I didn’t know you and…” he trailed off, his cheerful mask slipping for a moment. “I didn’t know.” A pang of guilt bit into me. “Jason it's not what you think,” I spoke quickly, my tongue tangling into knots as I tried to think of what to say. To make this better. “It's what?” He stared at me reproachfully. “It was a mistake?” His tone was mocking. “You played me like a fool Sophie,” he snapped, his eyes spitting fire at me. He paused, exhaling slowly. “I have patients to check on right now, have a nice day Doctor Sophie.” Jason didn't wait for my response, he turned on his heel and stalked away, leaving me gaping at him. ‘I've done it’ I thought, staring behind at Jason's retreating figure. I didn’t blame him, he'd been nothing but sweet and kind to me BUT I just couldn't see him as anything more than a friend. Now I'd hurt that friend. I sighed, drawing in a deep breath. I headed back to the nurse station, my heart feeling heavy with every step I took. Evelyn was filling some files in the nurse station when I walked in, the nurse station was quiet since the others were out on their rounds. “You took long enough,” she broke the silence, not looking up from the computer screen. “Wanted to speak to Jason about something,” I explained, taking a seat beside her. “Seems it didn't go very well, and rightly so, ” Evelyn pushed a file toward me. I opened it curiously and my breath caught in my throat, it was Max's file. The records only had his first name and records of his vital signs that I'd taken earlier. His record was strangely blank I thought, furrowing my brows as I flipped to the next page. Nothing. There was nothing, it was like he was some ghost. Nothing to show he'd existed as anything other than a patient rushed in two days ago. “Done looking?” Evelyn snapped me out of my thoughts. “There's nothing to see,” Evelyn stared at me closely. “What…” my voice hitched. I exhaled slowly, trying to calm down. “What's wrong?” I asked, trying to keep my tone level. “What's wrong?” Evelyn asked, looking up from the file. She glanced around before lowering her voice. “There's nothing on this guy, Sophie,” Evelyn whispered harshly. “No social ID, no information. Nothing. He was stitched how many times?” Evelyn's face whitened. “Twice! And that's for a six-centimeter-long gash, and today he's already walking about?” Her eyes were filled with shock and worry as she stared at me. “I…” My tongue tangled into knots and for a moment I couldn’t speak. “It's not normal,” Evelyn whispered. “You said you knew him?” I thought I did, I glanced at the report in my hands. How was I to explain this? There was no way Evelyn would buy that he was anything but normal. He was a werewolf, that wasn't normal. I was just about to speak when the door burst open and a nurse rushed in. “There's an emergency,” she yelled, her face completely pale. “What's the matter?” I asked, already rising to my feet. I wondered what could've put her in such a state, it was rare for nurses to be fazed by anything. “It's…” the nurse breathed erratically. Suddenly she burst into tears. “It's Doctor Jason,” she sobbed. “He's been hurt.” “What!” I felt a chill crawl down my spine as I stood frozen on the spot. I rushed out the door without another word.
