Chapter 1
My eyes glanced at the watch for the umpteenth time, 'Why wasn't time moving fast today?' I grumbled under my breath. I wished I could be home with a hot mug of coffee in my hands. The hospital was quiet tonight, it usually was on Monday nights. I'd have left an hour ago but I was covering a shift for a colleague who was running late. I stared outside at the gathering clouds, it was going to rain soon. My cell phone rang, pulling me out of my thoughts, my eyes widened for a moment seeing who was calling. 'Why was Lucas calling me?' I wondered, I glanced around before moving to somewhere quiet. "Hello? Lucas, what's up?" "Sophie, there's a problem," Lucas's voice felt strained, my heart thudded. "What...what happened?" I asked, my voice shaky, Lucas wouldn't call me if it wasn't urgent or important, and either of the two was likely bad news. "Ava says you should be careful lately, there've been sightings of werewolves in town, from the description I think they're from Dark Ridge Pack." "What!" I gasped, I glanced around before speaking, "Are you sure of this? They've never come this far into town, maybe it's because of something else." I spoke in a low tone. "I don't know Sophie, but you need to stay low-key, Ava says you should take a leave from work, and stay off the grid for a few weeks," Lucas replied to me, his voice softer. "No,...no way Lucas," I started shaking my head, "I'm not going to go hide in a cave just because there were sightings of them, I can't live like that Lucas." "I know," Lucas sighed, "think about it Sophie, after that…" Lucas hesitated, not quite sure how he'd broach the subject. The attack on our pack was almost a taboo subject to me, any remembrance of it sent shivers down my spine and tears pricking my eyes. "After the incident," Lucas finally said, he hurried on; "we agreed that any sightings of them should be taken seriously Sophie, you should take a few days off, and let this blow over. I wouldn't know what to do if… if…" Lucas stuttered, "I wouldn't know what to do if something happened to you." I closed my eyes as a stab of pain shot through me, dark hidden images threatened to creep up on me, I forcibly pressed them down, in no mood to delve into that. "Okay Lucas," I nodded my head, "I'll take leave, but for a few days only, I have patients to take care of," I said firmly, leaving no room for negotiation. "Okay that's good, I'll let Ava know," Lucas didn't press further. I hung up, suddenly hating that I'd picked up the call, Lucas's words filled me with dread, and my eyes glanced around the hospital corridor, I felt uneasy. "Sophie," a voice called from behind me, making me jump, it was Jason. Jason was one of the doctors at the hospital, he was very friendly to me, and his eyes warmed as he stared at me. "Yeah Jason, are you done?" I asked "Yes sure, Doctor Connelly's difficult to work with, I'm fed up with his attitude," Jason grumbled, taking off his white coat. "Why are you still in? Shouldn't you be off duty for now?" Jason asked. "I'm covering for Evelyn, she's not here yet." I sighed and glanced at my watch in annoyance. "I'll just drop this, perhaps we'll head home together." Jason's eyes locked on mine. I bit my lip, not quite sure what to tell him, Jason didn't hide his intentions toward me. I hesitated "I… I don't think…" "That's what you need to do Sophie…" Jason smiled at me as he walked away, "Think." I hesitated, stuck in my thoughts. "Emergency! Emergency!" A loud voice suddenly pulled me out of my thoughts, and two nurses rushed in pushing a stretcher. I rushed up to them, my eyes narrowed at the sight, the person's entire body was covered in cuts and bruises, some were quite deep. "What happened?" I asked as we rushed down the corridor. "I don't know, he came by himself, he passed out because of too much blood." The nurse explained. "What's his condition?" Jason rushed into the ward, he'd changed back into his white coat. "He's bleeding, seriously, has some tears and wounds…" I explained hurriedly, as I checked his vitals while also strapping him to the health equipment. "Help me turn him over." I waved at Jason. We flanked the patient, then slowly turned him over, my breath caught in my throat at his appearance, he was handsome, and his tousled hair fell in curls around his face. I let myself stare at him for a while longer, I didn't realize Jason had called me till he tapped me. "What's the problem? You look distracted." He cut open the patient's shirt to reveal a body riddled with scars. I blushed, I shook my head, "It's nothing," I lowered my face. "Okay, I'll get some bandages to quell the bleeding, then we'll begin stitching him up," Jason said rushing out. "Don't forget anesthesia," I yelled behind him, I turned back to the man, and stared at the cuts on his skin. 'What happened to him?' I wondered, my eyes came across a deep laceration, it was long, and it started from the base of his rib cage to his chest. A chill crawled up my spine, that wasn't accidental, it looked like something a werewolf would do. A chill crawled up my spine as I remembered my conversation with Lucas. "There have been sightings of werewolves in town," 'Could he be one of them?' My hand skimmed over the laceration lightly, my eyes widened in shock, because...he was staring at me. His eyes locked in on mine, and my heart thudded. My eyes stared at him, I couldn't look away, It was as if time stood still. Suddenly, the stranger's eyes flashed with a dark blue glow, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. I felt a thin thread connecting us two, it was surreal. It was then that I realized the truth - this man was not just any man. He was a werewolf, and I was his mate. I'd just realized it the moment we locked eyes, the implications of this left me breathless. My mind reeled as the stranger's eyes returned to their normal color, he whispered, his voice barely audible, "You're mine." I felt a shiver run up my spine as our eyes locked. "Let's get to it Sophie," Jason rushed in, interrupting my thoughts, "We need to handle these lacerations ASAP! He's losing a lot of blood, it's a miracle he's still alive." 'Or a werewolf' I thought, I let loose a shaky breath, my eyes not leaving him, his eyes were closed, and he was unconscious. I and Jason worked quickly, I washed and cleaned the lacerations on my end. My mate! This man was my mate, my eyes gazed across the man slowly. As we worked to repair his wounds, I couldn't help but steal glances at him, my eyes were drawn to his handsome features. My hands moved swiftly, stitching wounds, as Jason's voice urged me on. "Faster, his heart rate's dropping!" My eyes narrowed, my mind racing with the thought of losing him. Suddenly, darkness engulfed us, the lights flickering out. My heart skipped a beat, fear gripping my chest. "No, no, no!" I whispered, my hands freezing in mid-air.
