My hands trembled as a wave of panic rose within me. "Jason there should be a pen light hanging on the wall by the door, go get it… quickly," I urged him, my voice shaking with panic. "Okay, I'm on it," Jason said, I could barely see the outline of his white coat. Something clattered to the floor, and Jason muttered a curse under his breath. "Be careful," I said, suddenly the lights came back on. My eyes darted to the man, my breath hitched, and his chest wasn't moving. "J..Jason, something's wrong," I hurriedly checked his pulse, the blood drained from my face, 'Was he dead?' My hands cross-checked again. "Jason I need blood, fluids and …." I hurriedly listed out a few more things. "Be fast Jason!" I urged him. I turned back to the man, my lips moved silently as I muttered a quick prayer, nothing could happen to him, the urge to protect him seemed to come from the depths of my being, I just knew I couldn't let him die. Jason rushed in again, we hurriedly strapped him up, my heart in my mouth, every second counted. I checked his pulse again, and relief flooded through me as I registered his pulse, it was very weak but it was there. I breathed heavily as I stepped back, only realizing how much pressure I'd been under, my entire back was drenched with sweat. "You did good Sophie," Jason said, his face strained, his shoulders drooped, he was exhausted. "Thank you," I adjusted a few things before we stepped out together. I met Evelyn in the lobby, she walked up to me and hugged me. "I'm sorry I came late Sophie, the weather was just awful, I heard someone was brought in, how's the patient now?" Evelyn asked. My eyes shifted slightly at the thought of the stranger, "He's fine, he got messed up pretty badly. Lost a lot of blood…" I said images of the stranger flashed through my mind. Evelyn's eyes widened in concern. "That's terrible! I'm glad you and Jason were able to stabilize him. What's his story, anyway?" I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I'm not entirely sure yet. He didn't have any identification on him, and he's been unconscious since arrival." I carefully avoided mention of the brief moment he'd been unconscious, I could still feel the heat from his gaze. Evelyn's curiosity was palpable. "Well, I'm sure we'll learn more soon. You look like you could use a break, Sophie. Why don't you go grab some sleep at home while I take over here?" I nodded gratefully, I felt the weight of the past hour leave my shoulders. As I stepped outside into the cool evening air, I couldn't shake the image of the stranger's piercing eyes and the inexplicable connection I felt towards him. "Sophie, wait up, I thought you'd wait for me," Jason's voice interrupted my thoughts. "Could we hang out?," Jason asked, "For just an hour perhaps," he hurriedly added. I sighed, my voice weary, "I'm sorry Jason, I'm exhausted. After what just happened, I think I'll rest up, maybe some other time." I stared pleadingly at Jason. Jason's face fell, but he nodded understandingly. "Uhm...sure that's fine, I understand, I'll see you tomorrow then." Jason walked away before I could speak. I stared at his back with complicated eyes, and a pang of guilt shot through me. I liked Jason, but I couldn't see him as more than a friend. 'Seems you're forgetting someone,' An image of the stranger lying in the hospital bed popped up in my head, I shook the thought away, my cheeks reddened. I was just about to leave when a black car drove in and parked. My steps slowed, and I stared at the car doubtfully, wondering if it was another emergency. Two men got out of the car, they wore long black trench coats that fluttered in the breeze. My eyes narrowed immediately, 'Werewolves,' a chill crawled up my spine, I could sense a faint forbidding aura around them. I was gifted with keen senses when I was born, it was a gift. I could sense werewolves however well they disguised and however calm they kept their inner wolf. What were they doing here? Were they here for me? My mind whirled with questions as I stared at them. My heart began to race as they approached the hospital entrance. I quickly ducked back into the hospital my heart pounding in my chest. Evelyn was surprised to see me back, "Did you forget something, Sophie?" "Well...yes I did, I think I left my keys," I lied, my heart beating frantically, I hurriedly went behind the counter just as the two men strode in. Evelyn approached them, "How may I help you?" She asked. I paused, hidden behind the counter with held breaths, I strained my ears to catch their words. "We're looking for somebody, we believe the person's here," a voice spoke, piercing the momentary silence. 'What!' My blood ran cold, my body shuddered. "Who are you looking for? Do you have any means of identification or names?" Evelyn asked as he walked towards the counter. I cursed under my breath, she'd brought them close, I couldn't stay hiding under the counter, it'd look suspicious. I sat up, and the faces of the two men came into sight. They both had cold expressions, their eyes flashed with an eerie light. I stared away. "We're looking for this man, he's a close relative," one of the men pulled out a grainy photo. 'Man?,' I exhaled a deep breath, relief flooded through but my eyes narrowed suddenly. Evelyn turned around, "Let me go get my glasses, give me a minute," "Do you know him?" the man asked, his eyes narrowing as he noticed my expression. I hesitated, my mind racing. "No, I don't," I lied, trying to sound convincing. "He looks familiar, but I can't quite place him. Can I take a closer look?" The man handed me the photo, his eyes never leaving mine. I took it, my heart racing as I studied the grainy image. The other man tensed slightly, his hand resting on something at his waist. My hair stood on end as I realized he might be armed. I kept my expression blank, trying not to show my fear. "I've never seen this face," I said, handing the photo back. "Maybe you could try the next hospital." The man frowned, his eyes glinting with suspicion. "Are you sure, Miss?" he pressed, holding up the photo. I forced myself to meet his gaze, my heart pounding in my chest. "I'm positive," I lied, trying to sound convincing. "I've never seen this man before." As I stared into his cold, calculating eyes, I shivered uncontrollably. Those eyes didn't belong to a relative or a concerned citizen - they belonged to a killer. And I knew I had to get away from them as fast as possible.
