His eyes scrutinized me in silence for some seconds and I held my breath, silently praying nervousness wasn't written all over my face.
The man finally nodded, "Alright, I understand." The man turned to leave, I'd just let out a quiet sigh of relief when he suddenly paused in his steps, he walked back to me. "But just in case you remember anything…" he put a business card on the counter, his cold dark eyes fixed on me. " Call me."
"Okay, I will," I nodded, trying to keep my gaze steady. The man nodded curtly before he walked out, followed by his colleague. I stared as they walked out together, heart in mouth.
"They're already gone?" Evelyn's voice jolted me out of my daze, she came back wearing her glasses.
I nodded and I quickly dropped the business card in the trash behind me, "The person isn't here Evelyn, maybe the person wasn't brought here." I forced a smile at Evelyn, but my mind filled with questions. Why were they after that man? Were they the ones that'd injured him so badly? I shuddered as I recalled the cold gleam in the man's eyes, those eyes belonged to a killer.
Evelyn nodded, removing her glasses, "I guess so, I don't know what's going on these days, emergencies seem to be popping up almost daily."
She'd started rambling I knew and I walked out from behind the counter, getting ready to leave. "What emergencies are you talking about?" I asked, "Today was our first in three days," I silently shuddered at the remainder of the last patient, his hand had been torn by a faulty electric saw.
"We're better off," Evelyn chuckled, sitting back in her seat. "My friend Sally said there must be some tree felling or hunting going on because they've gotten a few men rushed in with serious tears, some look like what a wild animal would do, it's crazy." Evelyn frowned as she rumbled but my blood ran cold.
Men with serious tears, some look like animal scars? My mind immediately went to the man back in the ward, the lacerations that'd been all over his body, and now Evelyn's words. It couldn't be a coincidence, could it? My body tensed as my mind raced with possibilities.
I exhaled slowly as Evelyn's words sunk in, something was up. I sighed and walked back, Evelyn looked up from the book in her hands, "You forgot something?"
"No," I shook my head, "I just thought I'd take a quick peep at the patient before I leave," I brought an excuse.
Evelyn lowered her glasses, her eyes flashed with a knowing look and her lips curled up, "Are you sure you aren't trying to ogle the fine young man?" Evelyn's tone implied deeper meaning.
"I…" my cheeks flushed, "Of Course not," I denied, staring ahead so she wouldn't see my reddened cheeks. Evelyn chuckled without saying anything. I slowed my walking steps as I turned around the corridor, silently wondering why the urge to see the patient had come over me all of a sudden. 'Get a grip, Sophie,' I mentally scolded myself.
I just wanted to see him, which was strange, I'd worked at the hospital for over a year and all the time I'd tried to stay out of sight. And now I wanted to go see the first strange werewolf I laid eyes on after all this time, how much more lowkey could this get? I smiled to myself but my legs still moved and I headed towards the ward.
Suddenly I felt a faint presence behind me, the hair at the nape of my neck prickled but when I turned around, I didn't see anyone. I was alone in the corridor, I breathed out, trying to relax. Soon I arrived at the ward, my outstretched hands held the handle as I silently wondered why I was trying to get into the ward. 'Enough thinking' I thought, opening the door.
"What!" I blurted out, my heart racing. My eyes narrowed as I stared at the empty bed, where was he? I stared around the empty hospital room. My mind raced with thoughts as I walked into the room, he'd just gotten stitched up not long ago, where could he possibly be? Unless… my blood ran cold… unless he…'No, no,' I shook my head, denying the thought. Those werewolves couldn't have gotten to him could they? But as I stared at the empty bed doubts began creeping up to me.
"Are you looking for someone?" A cold voice spoke behind me, startling me. I whirled around, heart in mouth and found myself staring at the man who'd come in earlier.
My eyes narrowed slightly, 'How'd he get here?' I breathed, trying to sound calm, "Yo–you startled me," I tucked a stray strand of hair behind my head, "What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly. 'Had he found anything out?'
The man smiled slightly, "I could ask the same of you…" his voice hardened, "You lied to me, nurse."
My heart began to beat frantically, "I… I don't know what you're talking about, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here." I took a step backward, keeping some distance between us.
The man's gaze pierced through me like a dagger, his eyes blazing with an unnerving intensity. "He was here, wasn't he?" he growled, his voice low and menacing.
"I... " I tried to speak, but my words caught in my throat as he ignored me, his eyes scanning the room with a calculating gaze.
His eyes locked onto mine, and I felt a chill run down my spine. "Where is he?" he demanded, his voice dripping with malice. "How much did he pay you? I'll triple it, just tell me where he is."
"I…I don't..." I stuttered, my heart racing, as my tongue tangled up in knots. But before I could speak, the man's eyes narrowed menacingly, at the limit of his patience, and a dark aura erupted from him, making my blood run cold.
"He's a dangerous man, nurse," he hissed, his voice dripping with venom. "You should tell me where he is."
My heart beat erratically in my chest, just as I thought I was going to collapse from fear, a voice called out from the door, cutting through the tension. "I'm here."
The man's eyes snapped toward the speaker, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of fear in their depths. But it was quickly replaced by a snarl as he whirled around to face the newcomer. "We don't need to fight, Max," he said, his body posture looking tense.
My eyes followed his, and I saw him - the patient. He leaned against the wall, his eyes blazing with an intense light that seemed to burn with an inner fire. 'How was he even moving?' My eyes widened as I stared at him.
The air was thick with tension as the two men faced off, their eyes locked in a silent challenge. Suddenly, the patient moved in a movement so fast it was almost invisible, his hands suddenly appeared around the other man's neck like a vice.
"How about I kill you first?" he growled, his voice low and deadly.
The room seemed to hold its breath as the two men stood there, locked in a silent struggle. I knew I had to act, but my body seemed frozen in fear.
