Chapter 12 When Relief Turns Cold

1152 Words
Sophie “SOPHIE,” Evelyn yelled my name, snapping me out of my daze. “Are you okay?” She stared at me in concern. “I'm fine,” I muttered, beaming a smile at her and I pushed my phone into my pocket. But even then thoughts and questions still filled my mind. What was Max getting at? Why wasn't it safe? What happened? Did this have anything to do with Jason? The questions filled my head and I didn't quite have the answers. “Just go home,” Evelyn patted me on the shoulder. “Doctor Sinclair will definitely take good care of him,” she tried to assure me, thinking I didn't want to leave Jason alone. ‘Leave?’ A chill ran down my spine, put aside whether Max was telling the truth or not, I couldn’t go anywhere. “I'll stay for a while,” I nodded, giving Jason one last look. We walked out of the ward together and headed towards the reception together. Along the way I kept getting sympathetic stares and nods from the other nurses and doctors, everyone knew Jason and I were close. Some had assumed we were a couple. “You know the drill, Sophie,” Evelyn paused at an intersection. “Go home, get some rest and I'll be the first to call you if there are any new developments with Jason.” “I…” I opened my mouth to speak but Evelyn held up her hand, stopping me. “I know what you're going to say,” Evelyn shook her head. “Don't.” “Go home Sophie, I mean it,” she didn't wait to hear my reply before she turned on her heel and walked off. I stared behind her for a moment before I turned to leave. I’d just turned round the corner when I froze, and I quickly backed up, retreating back a few steps. What was he doing here? My heart skipped a beat and I paused in my steps, my pulse quickening. It was the werewolf from the other day, the ones who'd come looking for Max. ‘What was he doing here?’ I wondered, peering from my vantage point. Max wasn't here, I couldn't even think of the reason this man could be here. But whatever it was, it couldn't be good. Was this the reason behind Max's text? I wondered, as panic assaulted me. I didn't doubt that if he wasn't here for Max, he'd be here for me. I secretly watched as the man walked up to the receptionist—the nurse on duty and he uttered a few words. I was too far away to overhear what he said. Claire frowned and she glanced over her shoulder but she nodded after a while and walked out from behind the counter. 'What did he tell her?’ My heart lurched in my chest as I watched her walk towards my direction and I moved backward, taking care not to be spotted. “Claire,” I walked to her the moment she turned around the corner, I'd tried my best not to look panicked. “Sophie?” Claire smiled, “I was just about coming to find you. Someone's out there,” she motioned behind her. “He's asking for you, it seems urgent.” Indeed. I felt a big block of ice envelope my insides and I shivered, he was here for me. “What's wrong?” Claire frowned, noticing my expression. “It's nothing,” I shook my head, forcing a smile. “Did he tell you what he wanted to see me for?” I asked, silently guessing the lie he'd come up with. Claire shook her head, “He didn't say, but he looked really tense, it must be serious Sophie. Lets go,” Claire turned to leave. “Cla—” I was just about calling her back when a shadow appeared before me. It was the man. “I was just about bringing her over,”Claire smiled at him and she stared at the man with sparkling eyes. “I'll excuse you two,” I wished I could call Claire back, to stay with me but I couldn't. I could only watch as she left, disappearing round the corner. “I—” my mouth felt dry and I took a step back, putting some distance between us. “What do you want?” I demanded, watching his every move. “Just come with me,” the man said coldly, not bothering with my question. “Don't make an unwise move or else,” he nodded behind him. “Your friend has the hots for me, wonder what could happen to her.” I paled, Claire's expression when she stared at him hadn't escaped my notice. I didn't dare imagine what he'd do to her. “I'll come,” I whispered, nodding my head. I could feel my heart sinking to the pit of my stomach. “Let's go,” he moved aside for me to pass. I swallowed the lump in my throat, slowly walking forward. “Don't make any funny movements,” he growled, warning me. I nodded, slowly walking past him and into the corridor. “You're making a mistake,” I whispered under my breath, well aware the man would hear me. Werewolves had sensitive hearing. Indeed. The man's eyes narrowed but he didn't budge, he walked behind me in a leisurely manner. What was I going to do? I wondered, staring around, looking for a way out. He wouldn't make a move in public I thought, but the thought of his threat made my eyes dim. I couldn't just leave, what would happen to Claire? I couldn't just leave her here I thought, already regretting my decision to stay. I should've followed Lucas's advice and left, none of this would have happened. I'd just turned around the corner when a familiar feeling rose up within me. I paused, glancing around as I wondered where that feeling was coming from. Then I saw him. “Max,” I blurted out, a wave of relief flooded into me and I nearly let a few tear drops slip. I didn't know why but my heart felt settled the moment I saw him. “Hmph!” The man behind me snorted coldly, “Don't be too happy yet,” he sneered, his voice filled with ridicule. His eyes were devoid of fear as he stared ahead, looking at something behind Max. ‘What!’ my heart skipped a beat and I took a few steps forward. Him? I felt my relief fade away and my blood turned to ice. It was him. The man who'd come leading the werewolves to ask about Max. Max was with him? My face paled and I stared, in shock as my mind raced with thoughts. What was going on?
