Free. Free at damn last. Fae could almost not believe it as she packed the last of her things into her travel bag. It had been 2 years living under Anthony’s’ rule. The first year his cruel words and mental abuse made her believe no one would want her if she left him, towards the end his threats are what made her stay. A knock on her bedroom door made her tense up, but she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding when Samantha flounced into the room. “Are you done yet?” Sam whined as she flopped on the bed. Fae could not help but smile looking at her impatient friend. They had met a few months after her and Anthony moved in together, it took a while for Fae to open up about the abuse, but she wouldn’t be here now if she hadn’t. “All done!” Fae replied and threw her hands up into the air. Sam grabbed her bags mumbling “finely” and out the door she went. Taking one last look around the room, Fae’s eyes landed on the mirror against the wall, the crack still visible where Anthony had thrown her phone the first time she had told him she would leave. She felt sick at the thought, if Sam weren’t with her right now, she would unpack her bags and stay. Chicken. She thought aloud her reflection. The ‘toot-toot’ of a car horn made her laugh as she turned and made her way outside. Her new life was about to begin, and the only thing she had to worry about now was Sam’s big brother.
