Chapter 1.
It was July in Zhanli. White fluffy clouds dotted the azure blue sky as the sun beamed beatifically, casting a golden glow upon the earth. Maria Kura rose first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her uncle's family of seven before grabbing her travelling documents and having her abrupt departure in the silence. "We are parceling out from next planting season henceforth, and I mean every household expenses-the rent, electricity bills and groceries! Your niece ought to be apportioning fees since she lives and does the same occupation with us. Fine. She takes care of the house, our kids and ease off the need for a housekeeper, but it equates to pittance. She is plainly freeloading off us." Maria eavesdropped on her aunt-in-law's lament during the couple's argument few months earlier. She had to excuse her uncle and his family for a while. However, there was only one reason for saving her profits without contributing to payment of bills, and that was going to college outside Asia. Since Maria wanted to travel on short notice without having anyone to help her through, She decided to spend her free time surfing for school that offered scholarship in Europe, Australia and North America. She soon found one in Toronto, applied and passed their online entrance test. She proceeded on her visa application and ticket purchase at Zhanli's local embassy. One hour later, she was home alone. She quickly tossed in her prearranged dresses and other substantial belongings in two old, leather boxes. She dropped off a letter written in Mandarin to announce her departure before leaving for the nearest train station. "Maria." A familiar masculine voice summoned her attention the moment she got off the train. It was Mr. Abraham. "Mr. Abraham." As Maria hurried over with her heavy boxes, she took concise note of a short, plump lady by his side. She must be Rehab, his daughter. Mr. Abraham had always discussed his beautiful daughter after school hours to whoever cared to listen. At a closer distance, Maria was dumbfounded after taking full cognizance of the lady's facial features. Contradicting Mr. Abraham's claims, the young lady had no special features that distinctly differentiated her from other teenagers like her father had always described - well, no monkey would say its baby is not fine. Now that they had met face-to-face, she desperately wished to call her highschool friends to debunk Mr. Abraham's claims after their meeting. The lady was just having a random look with no special point of attraction from her. Standing next to Mr. Abraham with a beautiful smile, she appeared cool and emotionless. Maria's gaze strayed to Mr. Abraham's van parked nearby, she had few flashbacks of how she and her friends used to ride with him to their houses after school. "Hi, Mr. Abraham" "Hello, Maria" Mr. Abraham replied drawing her to himself for a warm embrace. "look how grown you are." tossing her in a three-sixty rotation. He continued, "come meet my neighbour, Grace." Pulling Maria along towards her, Mr. Abraham furthered, "she has been of great help to me since my family and I moved to this area. Don't mind her aura, she's such a sweet soul" he added amidst giggles. "You were one of my best students back then and definitely deserve to meet her." Maria was all wrong, she could not believe her ears. She drowned in smiles, not at her old teacher and his fierce looking neighbor but her horrible assumption skill. She openly extended her right hand to Grace and introduced herself, "Hello, Miss Grace. I'm Maria Kura". Grace's intense gaze scanned Maria from head to toe and back. With Mr Abraham staring at her and clearing his throat, she reached out her right hand for a shake although her voice gave off a combative tone. "Mrs. Grace!" Maria cringed at her response, "yeah! wrong again." She thought aloud. After the handshake, Grace dawdled towards the van, excusing the duo. Rehab repeatedly checked the time as Mr. Abraham literally jumped from one discussion to the other. "Sir! I have a flight to catch up with" she finally blurted while scratching her head. He considerably wished her well and audibly bid her parting words, "Alright, pom-pom. See you some other time." "Taxi!" Maria hurriedly stopped an empty cab during Mr. Abraham's departing compliments. Sticking her waving fists outside the window, she hollered, "Bye Mr. Abraham" right before the car zoomed off. "What a talkative man he was... " She heaved a sigh of relief as she rode to the Province's airport. After undergoing through series of body, belongings and documents inspection, Maria was checked in to the economy wing of plane. "Don't ever touch my pot again!" "are you nuts?!" "why are still on bed by this time?" "Don't you ever leave the house unclean before going to bed!" she repeatedly reminisced her bitter experiences at intervals till her plane landed at Toronto Pearson international airport tons of hours after. "Taxi!, Taxi!!" Maria shouted, running after every cab that passed by right after she left the airport area. Few passersby were entertained and chuckled at her acts. "Hello, young lady, where are you headed?" questioned a young man after pulling his portable saloon car to a halt. Maria scanned the car in curiosity. Having no signs of a regular cab to her, she hollered in a funny English accent "help, people, help!" "A crook wants to kidnap me" she screamed running towards a crowded area with fake crocodile tears. The young man being pissed, drove off annoyingly. "Young lady, that was a private cab!" one of the onlookers behind her lamented. "But it doesn't have a cab indication." she replied only to turn back to see everyone dispersed already. "What a weird place!" Maria sucked as she dragged her boxes away from the scene. "Hey, driver!" she shouted, swaving her palms for the cab to be stopped after sighting another cab. "I need to get to this location" she continued after the cab stopped, tossing a sheet at the driver. "150 bucks!" the driver replied after reading through the content of the sheet. She lamented on the price announced by the driver In Mandarin before barging in with her belongings. "Here we are..." said the driver, halting after one hour of driving. Maria offloaded her boxes and paid from the money she had exchanged at the airport. "Wow!..." She marvelled at the gigantic gate mounted before her. "Hello, miss. How can you be helped?" Maria turned to see two fierce looking men clothed in security uniform. Shocked by their demeanor, she lost her voice. "Has cat caught your tongue? rumbled another voice from one of the men. "My name is Mm-ma-maria" she stuttered. "I am a fresh student from Asia. "Then, how's that my problem? Get in and find your way around here!" she thought would be their response due to their first reactions. "Can I see your admission letter?" The man by her left disappointing her asked, stretching forth his hand. "Yes, sure." Maria searched her documents pouch for her admission letter before handing it over to the man. "Follow me" he finally spoke few minutes after a rigorous check on her papers, leading her to the administrative building. "Ask for the Admission officer's office when you enter." He divulged before walking off to his starting point. "Thank you sir" she said while bowing in respect to the already leaving security personnel before bouncing into the building. "Hi. Please, I'm headed to the admission officer's office. Which number is it?" Immediately Maria reached the second floor, she asked the man at the reception wing. "Hello, miss ..." "Maria" she intruded. "Alright. My name is Williams, the admission officer is not on seat at the moment but I could help with the collection of your documents and allocation of hostel prior her arrival. Is it alright by you?"
