He was the workaholic CEO who swore off marriage. She was the ordinary girl battling life's hardships.

A crushing gambling debt forced them into a marriage of convenience—a collision of fates that would bind them forever.

Five years later, Megan Harper returned with her degree.

"Megan," Liam Lambert murmured, lips curling in amusement as he captured her mouth in a searing kiss. "Ready for some fun?"

Chapter 1 No Way Out
The dead of night. In a European-style villa, Megan lay stripped bare on the bed. The lights were off, her palms slick with sweat against the sheets as she stared at the faint patterns on the ceiling. The shower's roar faded to silence. Her breath caught in her throat, heart hammering against her ribs. The bathroom door creaked open—a sliver of light spilling through—as a man stepped out, a towel hanging precariously low on his hips. She couldn't make out his face, only that he was towering, broad-shouldered. What was coming would come. The man settled on the mattress edge, bracing himself on one arm as his gaze scorched over her. "Ready?" His voice was rich, smooth like aged wine, but his eyes held something unreadable. Megan couldn't meet them. "I... I'm ready," she whispered, dropping her lashes. He said nothing else, simply pulled back the covers and covered her body with his. When she woke again, dawn light seeped through the drapes. His side of the bed lay cold, the faint scent of cigarettes lingering. He'd been gone for a while. Megan dragged her exhausted limbs to the shower. By the time she emerged, her phone on the nightstand vibrated violently. The moment she answered, her stepmother's shrieked through. "Megan! How did it go?" "He..." Her voice came out ragged. Her eyes landed on the neat pile of bills by the bed. "He gave me... forty thousand." Forty thousand? Sheila let out a shaky breath, then snapped, "Get your ass over here with it! Your father's in deep trouble—they're banging down our door!" "Right." Megan hung up, numb, then shrugged into the dress that had been laid out. As she made her way downstairs, clutching the money, the driver stood ready by the car. "Miss Harper, Mr. Lambert asked me to drive you home." Megan's breath hitched, then she nodded with timid appreciation. "Thank you." Sliding into the backseat, she turned toward the window, watching the scenery flash by. The July heat clung like a suffocating blanket, yet her heart remained frozen—a glacier in her chest that even July's fury couldn't melt. Thirty minutes later, the car rolled to a stop. Mumbling thanks to the driver, she stepped out into the crumbling neighborhood. Same sky, different universe. Here, laundry sagged from power lines like defeated flags, dripping onto streets paved with grime and rainwater. A woman's lace bra hung unselfconsciously from a windowsill nearby. Shirtless men traded curses with heavyset women, while down the block, a middle-aged matron chased a shrieking child with a bamboo stick. Clutching the black plastic bag tighter, Megan ducked her head and hurried forward. Before she even touched the door, her father's whimpering plea sliced through the thin walls. Her veins flooded with ice water. She shoved inside—and froze. Chaos. Shattered dishes, overturned furniture. In the corner, her stepmother Sheila clutched Megan's five-year-old stepsister, sobbing. At the epicenter of destruction, her father curled on the floor like a crumpled paper bag as three tattooed brutes kicked and punched. "STOP!" Megan lunged, shoving the bag at the nearest thug. She threw herself over her father's trembling body, voice raw as broken glass. "Forty thousand! You promised—take it and leave!" "Well, well." The ringleader—a hulking man with a neck tattoo—snatched the bag. His grin widened as he thumbed through the bills. "Payday, boys." Cash changed hands amid crude jokes and raucous laughter. One brute slapped another's shoulder. "Let's blow this dump." They swaggered out, their laughter hanging thick as the stench of sweat and cheap tobacco. Megan barely had time to exhale in relief when the tattooed thug suddenly loomed over her, crouching too close for comfort. A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she instinctively tightened her grip around her father, trembling like a leaf. The brute rubbed his stubbled jaw, eyes locking onto the telltale marks on Megan's neck. "Nolan," he sneered, "you've sunk real low." Shame scorched through her veins. Megan tried shrinking into herself, desperate to hide the evidence of her humiliation. "Listen up, princess," the thug chuckled darkly. "Three days. No money? You'll watch your old man die." She gave the slightest nod, eyes turning red-rimmed. With a final slap against his thighs, the thug swaggered out, leaving the house in heavy silence. Megan struggled to lift Nolan's battered form. His face was a mess of bruises when he finally met her gaze. "Megan..." His voice cracked with guilt. She forced a brittle smile. "I'm fine, Dad." Nolan stared blankly at his shaking hands. "I've ruined everything. No more gambling—I swear! Next time I touch cards, I'll... I'll chop these hands off!" Megan said nothing. She'd stopped believing those promises years ago. Her gaze shifted to Sheila and the little girl huddled in the corner. "Auntie," she said gently, "let's clean up first. We've bought three days at least." Sheila's quiet sobs lasted exactly thirty seconds before she exploded. Clutching her five-year-old like a human shield, she lunged at Nolan. "I want a goddamn divorce!" she screamed. "This is f*****g hell! I'm done with you!" Nolan stood motionless, taking the blows without resistance. The little girl wailed at her mother's outburst. Megan swept the crying child into her arms and bolted outside, the door slamming shut behind them like an escape. The woman's venomous curses pierced the air as the little sister wailed in Megan's arms. At eighteen, she could no longer hold back her tears. Her mother had passed young. After her father married Sheila, they'd given her this baby sister. Sheila wasn't exactly warm toward Megan, but they'd managed to limp along as a family—until now. Then everything shattered when Nolan became addicted to gambling. Endless marital screaming matches. The baby's ceaseless crying. Loan sharks pounding on their door... Perched on a rickety stool, Megan pressed her palms against her stinging eyes. Still, stubborn tears escaped down her cheeks. Little Thalia finally noticed something was wrong. The toddler waddled over and clumsily patted Megan's wet face with pudgy fingers. "Sissy...no cry," she lisped. Megan froze—then crushed the child against her, sobbing uncontrollably into her tiny shoulder. The weight of everything now rested solely on her. And the only lifeline left...was him—the Lambert heir who owned her desperation. ***** Later that night, Megan lay in the familiar bed, but this time lamplight spilled across the sheets. She burrowed under the duvet, finding comfort in the warm cocoon. When Liam emerged from the shower, he braced himself against the doorframe. Vodka slurred his movements tonight. Rubbing his temples, he stalked toward the bed, letting his towel drop carelessly. Megan peered out from the blankets, cheeks flushed pink from lack of air. Suddenly, Liam gripped her chin—tilting her face up with drunken insistence. His face finally materialized from the shadows—all sharp angles and dangerous intensity. His razor-sharp eyebrows were jet-black, his smoldering gaze hypnotic—more handsome than she'd imagined, yet exuding a commanding aura that left her pulse racing and breath shallow.
