THE AWAKENING
FADE IN:
EXT. ROYAL GARDENS – SUNSET – ESTATE OF THE DUKE OF DAREYN
A golden sun bleeds across a garden that looks plucked from a fairytale. Peacocks strut. Petals fall in slow motion. A string quartet plays softly in the distance.
NARRATION (V.O.) – LIRA:
They say stories are written in ink, unchangeable. But whoever wrote mine… must have hated me.
The camera moves past the main gazebo, where a radiant girl in sky-blue silk (EVELYN) flirts effortlessly with a handsome young DUKE (CALLEN). Behind them, a shadow—LIRA, 22, beautiful but modest, watches from afar.
NARRATION (V.O.) – LIRA (CONT'D):
I was Lira: the best friend. The shield. The scapegoat.
And the fool who died to protect their love story.
---
INT. BALLROOM – NIGHT
EVELYN and CALLEN swirl across the floor. LIRA claps politely on the sidelines, a glass of wine untouched in her hand.
LIRA (V.O.):
When I first read this novel, I cried when Lira died.
When I woke up as her... I laughed.
A SHIMMER ripples across her vision. Everything around her blurs. Her eyes widen. She stumbles back.
---
INT. LIRA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT – LATER
LIRA paces. Her hands tremble. She clutches a leather-bound book. On its cover: “The Rose of Dareyn.” Her fingers trail the pages—her own death scene.
CLOSE-UP: A LINE ON PAGE
"And with her final breath, Lira whispered: ‘Please... let them be happy.’"
LIRA:
That’s not what I’d say.
She closes the book. HARD.
---
INT. DUCHESS’S STUDY – FLASHBACK – A FEW DAYS EARLIER
YOUNGER LIRA, trusting and smiling, hands over a LETTER to the DUCHESS (EVELYN’S MOTHER).
DUCHESS:
You took the blame for Evelyn again? My, how loyal.
We must keep such servants close.
LIRA blinks. Did she just say “servants”?
---
INT. LIRA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT – RETURN TO PRESENT
LIRA sits at her mirror. Her eyes are sharper now. Her smile—crooked. Determined.
LIRA (V.O.):
That was the first crack. The first glitch in the story.
I began to remember everything—the chapters, the tropes, the lies.
I wasn’t a person. I was a prop.
She opens a secret drawer. Inside—an old dagger, a folded map, and... a list of all her upcoming “sacrifices.”
---
INT. DINING HALL – THE NEXT MORNING
A lavish breakfast is served. EVELYN pours herself tea, all charm and roses.
EVELYN:
Lira, could you attend my poetry reading today? I might cry if you’re not there!
LIRA (cheerfully):
Of course. Just after I deliver your apology to Lady Henvale for that little slap you gave her.
EVELYN freezes. CALLEN raises a brow. Everyone stops.
EVELYN (forced smile):
I-I don’t know what you mean.
LIRA (innocently):
Oh? I suppose I imagined covering for you again?
A long pause. The tension thickens. Then, a smile spreads on LIRA’s face—sharp and wicked.
LIRA:
Don’t worry. I’m used to it.
---
EXT. CARRIAGE – MOVING – LATER
LIRA rides alone, flipping through the novel again. She stops at a chapter titled “The Wedding and the Knife.”
LIRA (V.O.):
Chapter 47: My death.
Stabbed by a rebel pretending to be a guard.
No one ever asks why a rebel targeted me.
Because that’s not the story they cared to write.
She circles the rebel’s name with ink. Then underlines another: “Lord Fenric – sponsor of the rebellion.”
INT. LIBRARY – NIGHT
LIRA sneaks in, disguised as a maid. She moves with precision now, like someone who's watched this scene play out before.
She pulls down a forbidden scroll, hidden behind a loose brick. It shows a family tree—and reveals:
LORD FENRIC IS EVELYN’S UNCLE.
Her lips curl.
LIRA (V.O.):
Of course. The perfect alibi.
What better way to cover a political assassination than a tragic “mistaken identity?”
---
INT. EVELYN’S ROOM – SAME NIGHT
EVELYN sleeps peacefully. Her long hair sprawled over velvet pillows. LIRA stands over her, watching. Silent. Her hand trembles near her dagger.
LIRA (V.O.):
Should I kill her now? End the story before it begins?
...No. Not yet. I want her to know.
She places a red rose on the pillow and leaves.
---
INT. COURTROOM – DREAM SEQUENCE
LIRA stands trial. EVELYN and CALLEN point fingers at her. Nobles whisper behind fans.
NARRATOR (V.O.):
“She betrayed the crown.”
“She poisoned the heroine.”
“Off with her head.”
Suddenly, LIRA looks up. The world around her glitches like broken glass. She steps forward. A beat of silence.
LIRA (V.O.):
No.
This is my trial now.
---
INT. LIRA’S ROOM – MORNING – REALITY
She wakes with a start. Sweat drips down her face. The book glows faintly on her nightstand. She opens it—and sees a NEW LINE forming where the page was once blank:
“Lira smirked. She was no longer afraid of what came next.”
LIRA (whispers):
The story’s changing.
---
INT. DUKE CALLEN’S OFFICE – DAY
CALLEN leans over papers. LIRA enters.
LIRA:
Duke Callen. Let’s be honest. You don’t care for Evelyn.
CALLEN looks up, startled.
CALLEN:
Excuse me?
LIRA:
You’re tired of playing the perfect prince. She’s a porcelain doll, and you want steel.
So tell me—do you want a real ally?
A pause. A flicker of interest crosses his face. Then amusement.
CALLEN:
And what exactly are you offering, Lira?
LIRA (stepping close):
The power to rewrite the ending.
