Chapter 7           A door inside the lower parts of the compound opened sending a line of light into the darkened room. Amy was asked to wait outside with a guard until she came for her. Stepping into the room the overhead light came on flooding the space with light. Dr. Green smiled at her captive tied to the chair in the center of the cement floor.           “Comfortable dear?” No response came but she hadn’t expected it to. Walking over to the vacant chair in the room Dr. Green took a seat. Nodding to the camera in the corner she got herself settled before beginning.           “Let’s get in with it then, shall we?” Dr. Green received a glare but nothing more. It was alright the secrets will be spilled sooner or later. She watched the other occupant waiting for them to adjust to the sudden brightness. She had always believed herself to be a patient person but this one had pushed the limits to breaking point.           “Where to begin? Oh, I know. How about why you left?” Again, the other person refused to speak to her. She would hit a sore spot at some point. She simply needed to figure out what it was.           “I can’t think of any reason for you to have disappeared. You had always done your job properly. Never stepped out of line. So, what was it exactly? Shall, I guess? Could it be something to do with Amy and Levi? Perhaps how they're different from the other pairs?” Weary dull green eyes raised up to meet Dr. Green’s gaze. Still nothing was said. Dr. Green frowned a little. She had thought the two children would cause some reaction. There was not a twitch of a facial muscle to be seen. Dr. Green stood from her seat approaching the other chair slowly. She began circling around hoping to throw her off with a change of pace.           “What did you do to the two of them Astrid? I must admit, I’ve got some of my best analyzing their blood, but you’ve really twisted those genes quite well. I’m not sure how to proceed with them really. Amy is a little hard to get in hand you know. She attacked another girl for looking at Levi.” Astrid frowned making Dr. Green smile. Finally, she got something.           “Apparently, they are a true pair, so you didn’t mess with that. Although Levi seems to be less attached to Amy. Amy on the other hand is overly possessive of him. You know when they had first met, I thought they were going to make one of the best matches yet. That they were some of your best works to date. Now however I’m having my doubts.” Astrid let out a raspy short laugh. Taking her seat again Dr. Green faced her again.           “What makes you think they’re not?” Dr. Green was taken aback by the question. On the outside she remained composed but internally her mind was whirling with thoughts.           “So, you intended this outcome when you created them?”           “And what outcome is that?” Dr. Green watched a small smile spread across her face splitting her dry lips open. It was apparent that Astrid was going to go around in circles instead of just coming out with what she wanted to say. She would humor her for now in hopes that Astrid would slip up.           “They do not act like the other pairs. While the others can function outside of the pairing, each pair works better together. Those two are completely different. One acts on her own and treats her counterpart like her thing. The other wasn’t nothing to do with his other half. What did you do?” Astrid shook her head in disappointment.           “You and I both know how they turn out is up to the company. It wasn’t anything I did in their creation but rather what you have all done to raise them. Don’t worry there’s still time to correct your mistakes before they’re grown up.” Dr. Green became angry. How dare she lay the blame at her feet. The employees of the compound have done nothing different in raising them. The two of them have reacted differently to the regimen the rest of them have thrived on. Dr. Green looked the former lab employee up and down. Even given her current circumstances she appeared utterly calm. Astrid was clearly under the delusion of holding all the cards. It was time for introductions.           Dr. Green gracefully stood taking her time to move over to the door. Astrid watched her coolly probably expecting her to leave after turning the lights back off. While that would have been what she would have done before, now was different. She was done playing games with Astrid. She closed the door behind her taking a moment to collect herself before turning to the two in the hall. Motioning Amy over to her she smiled down and the little girl. Reaching into her jacket pocket she pulled out object from inside.           “It’s time for introductions Amy. Come along my dear.” Amy looked at Dr. Green with curiosity but said nothing while walking into the room once the door was opened. Astrid’s eyes went wide upon lay her sight on Amy. Dr. Green smiled while closing the door behind the two of them. Holding her hand out to Amy she watched Astrid’s reaction.           “This is the woman who created you, Amy. Why don’t you go say hello?” Amy looked at Dr. Green’s open hand before reverently taking the small blade from it. Giggling Amy moved towards Astrid giddy in the task before her.           Exiting the room Dr. Green pushed a euphoric Amy over to the waiting instructor. Carefully she removed the sharp implement from the child with little effort. Amy looked up to Dr. Green grinning from ear to ear.           “Go along now dear. Get cleaned up and head to dinner now.” Amy nodded in agreement practically vibrating as she stood there. The instructor led her away as Dr. Green moved away from the door to allow the clean-up crew to enter. Moving over to the phone on the wall outside of the room, Dr. Green hit the button to connect to the archives.           “Destroy the Eve genome. It has proved unusable.” Hanging up she turned to leave. She startled to find she was no longer alone in the hallway.           “What exactly is wrong with the Eve genome exactly?” Fear filled Dr. Green’s eyes as she turned to look at the man behind her.
