Chapter 1: The Cost Of A Stolen Night
I raised the test skit to see the two lines staring back at me, positive. I was pregnant for my boss’s child.
This was not supposed to happen, he was getting married in a few weeks time to his fiancé Camila Rothschild and if she ever found out, she won’t rest until she sees me six feet under.
I stared at my reflection in the bathroom sink before picking myself up and dressing up for work as the secretary to Gabriel Blackwood, the man with whom I was now carrying his child.
I didn’t know how I would face him with this news, if at all I would. What good would a one night stand like me bearing his baby do for him when he’s already getting married to someone of his caliber, he might even reject it.
I stopped a taxi and headed to Blackwood Enterprises, and all I could think about in the ride was how my life had taken a turn for the worse.
I arrived at the building that always seemed to stand out even among other skyscrapers in New York, befitting a billionaire company.
I headed straight for the elevator that took me to the highest floor where my office was, still trying to maintain composure to avoid rumours from spreading. The elevator door slid open and I was met with the face of my growing problem, Gabriel Blackwood.
He stood tall with his suit tailored to perfection, hands in pocket, he gave me an unreadable look, he always had this charisma to him that made everyone drawn to him, including me.
My heart skipped a beat, i hadn’t prepared enough to meet him, this was too sudden. I let out a quick smile to avoid him from noticing the panic that was overtaking me.
“Good morning sir, should i draw out your schedule for the day?” I said trying to break the awkward silence, he scanned my face with worry written on his.
“You're later than usual” he responded, checking his silver coated watch that screamed wealth.
“Traffic sir, I’ll get to work immediately” I moved out of the elevator but he placed his hands on my abdomen stopping me in my tracks.
“You look pale, sure you’re okay?” he asked, still scanning my face.
I had spent the early hours of the morning vomiting in my bathroom sink. I touched myself up before stepping out but I didn't put it past Gabriel to suspect something was off somewhere, he was too observant.
“I’m fine, didn’t get enough sleep last night that’s all” I lied, I slept like a baby last night, he raised one hand from his pocket and adjusted my hair behind my ear “you stress yourself too much you know that?” His deep voice ran shivers down my spine and I started having flashbacks of his moans on the night of our escapade.
“I’m just trying to do my best, I take my job and position in this company very seriously” I replied, unable to maintain eye contact. He left out a soft chuckle and headed for the elevator.
“Meet me in my office in ten minutes, we have a meeting and I'd like for you to be present” the elevator door closed shut and i headed for my desk.
For a moment, I forgot I was pregnant. Gabriel made me lose my senses anytime i was around him, he had that much effect of me, I began to fantasize about getting married and starting a family with him, maybe if i confess to him about his baby i was carrying he’ll admit his love for me and call off the wedding with that his unbearable fiancé, my delusion was caught short and i was quickly reminded of the impeding doom that awaited me as Camila Rothschild walked out of the elevator door straight into Gabriel’s office.
She always moved like she owned the place and everyone was supposed to obey her every command, well you can’t blame her, she’s getting married to the CEO, she also comes from a wealthy background and was spoiled most of her life.
She glanced at me indifferently before opening the door of Gabriel’s office, Gabriel trailed behind with few other men and he ushered me to follow him.
I walked into the office and took a seat, still trying to keep my cool, this wasn’t the first time I’ve attended one of his meetings but the secret baby growing inside me made me very nervous.
I glanced over at Camila and her eyes were glued to her phone, Gabriel sat at the CEO chair and the meeting commenced.
“As some of us are aware, hackers have gotten access into our company’s database and are demanding fifty million dollars in ransom, and the FTC is already sniffing around” the head of IT stated.
Gabriel frowned “We can’t afford to pay or settle lawsuits, we are already bleeding cash”
“I suggest we make a public statement to address the situation on time, control the narrative” head of PR stated
I glanced over at Camila who was still glued on her phone, I wondered why she was even here.
“Emma, set up a day this week for the public statement, I’ll also hire an external cybersecurity team to look into this issue, the sooner the better” Gabriel said, glancing at me.
I quickly nodded and began scheduling, the meeting held on for about thirty minutes more then everyone left except for Camila.
“Honey, I need to find an event planner in the city, the wedding is less than a month away” she said, grabbing hold of Gabriel’s hand. He looked tired and uninterested, making her let go of his hand.
“Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet now, is there someone else in the picture?” She asked, getting angry, her eyes met mine. “Is it her? Is she your mistress?” she continued.
“What are you talking about Camila?” Gabriel was visibly frustrated, “I don’t have time for this right now, I have a lot to do today, I’ll ask Emma to find you the best event planner in the city okay?” he said before taking his seat.
Camila looked at me with a suspicious look that could’ve said a thousand words, she picked up her purse and left the office without uttering another word. I stood up to take my leave too but Gabriel’s deep voice stopped me in my tracks.
“Wait, Emma” he said, getting up from his seat, I turned and he ushered me to come closer, my heart was beating like a wild beast as i took each step in his direction, he placed his fingers on my chin raising it up slightly “I can’t seem to get you off my mind” he whispered in my ear, my cheeks flushed uncontrollably, his cologne flooded my nose, I hated how helpless i felt around him “we shouldn’t be doing this, what if someone walks in on us” i said, my eyes shutting.
He grabbed my waist pulling me closer “when has anyone barged into my office unannounced?” he said, his lips a few centimeters from mine, every inch of my body wanted to be consumed by him but things were different now.
“Camil-” our lips united, urgent and consuming, like we’ve been starving for this moment, but i knew this was just a fairytale, I had to come clean to him and see his reaction, I pulled off from the kiss, looking him in the eye.
“I’m pregnant, Gabriel.”
