GENEVIEVE’S POV:
I wanna kick myself for saving someone who wants me dead?!
Should I just escape him before he finds out that I’m Luna Genevieve? But, with my weakened power and drained financial capacity, Lancelot is the best one who can help me destroy Elrod and his pack.
I can’t just waste this chance out of fear!
Besides, what if he’s just mistaken? What if it’s Elrod or Victor who killed his mate, then just put the blame on me instead?
And even if I’m the one who killed his mate, it may be because of self-defence.
“Are you okay?”
I jolt back when Lancelot lowers his face to mine.
Then,...
My body trembles when he gently wipes the beads of sweat on my temple with his fingers.
I swallow, forcing myself to calm down. “How exactly can I help? And when are we gonna execute our attack?”
“I’m gonna tell you when everything is ready. For the meantime, you must tell me everything I need to know about the Mountain Glacial Pack. And,...”
“... I need you to pretend to be my mate so dad can stop nagging me, until my heart becomes capable of finding a new one.”
“What?! You’re really that dense?! Your family just insulted me! And I’m sure your entire pack and the others will too! Even if I look like this, I still have pride, you know!” I hiss, rolling my eyes at him.
He smirks briefly. “You’re not too bad. So stop looking down on yourself too much.”
Not too bad still means bad!
“Fine,” I hiss again. “But, I need an initial payment for this whole ordeal, so I can eat and rent a better space than the one I’m renting now.”
Without ado, Lancelot writes me a blank check.
A small smile crosses my lips in excitement! I can just play it smart, collect millions, probably billions! With that, I can commission rogues or an entire pack to help me with my revenge, then run away from Lancelot!
But,...
My smile drops as I quickly acknowledge that I don’t have the heart to s.cam him after putting his trust in me.
“By the way,” Lancelot begins, pulling my attention from my selfish thoughts. “Don’t rent. Stay here in my penthouse with me.”
I open my mouth to protest, but he stops me.
“That’s not an offer. That’s a demand. It’s a way of making our fake romance believable.”
My brow furrows as I steady his extremely serious yet kinda desperate features.
Is he scared that the witch will go after him again, that’s why he wants me to be by his side to heal him just in case?
Or,..
Is he still hoping that I can bring his dead mate back to life?
A sharp sigh of frustration escapes me. “Fine. But, don’t you dare force yourself on me, or I’ll curse you.”
He smirks again, before turning his back on me. It’s insulting, yet impossibly alluring at the same time.
Later that afternoon, a middle-aged Omega of his pack, named Alice, comes by to prepare our dinner.
She teasingly whispers to me, “I’m glad Alpha Lancelot is now finding a way to move on from Alpha Maegan. Please, make him very happy like how he used to before.”
I force an awkward smile at her, which she counters with a genuine one.
When dinner is ready, my stomach growls. I’ve never felt this hungry in my life!
I slurp the pasta into my mouth, then take a big bite of the unsliced steak like a wild predator!
But then,...
I stop out of humiliation when I notice that both Alice and Lancelot are staring at me with pity in their eyes.
I forcefully swallow the food with the help of the iced tea. Then, I eat again, only this time, in a more gentle and womanly manner.
When Alice returns to the kitchen, Lancelot clears his throat.
“So, I’m interested in the witches’ powers. Can you tell me more about them?” he asks, there’s caution in his tone.
“Which is it exactly? How can we heal or reverse a fellow witch's curse? Or if we can bring the dead back to life?” I ask back.
A sense of hope manifests in Lancelot’s twitching gaze. “The latter.”
Somehow, I envy his mate. Someone, and surely more out there, wants her alive. But me, everyone wants me dead, including him!
“I don’t have that ability. But I know someone who has,” I say. “But,... I can’t tell you who that is just yet. You have to help me first with my revenge. I need to make sure you won’t betray me along our journey.”
Lancelot withdraws a breath of relief as he nods in agreement, unshed tears of joy glistening in his silver eyes.
“Thank you,” he whispers.
As we finish our meal, I head to the living area to stare at Lancelot’s mate’s portrait on the wall. But, no matter how much I try, I can’t remember ever meeting her before. And deep down, I know I wasn’t the one who killed her. So I shouldn’t worry.
Alice directs me to the spare bedroom on the upper floor. I then take a shower to relax my strained muscles. And when I’m done, a nightgown is already set on the bed.
The bed itself is huge and fluffy, but for some reason, I can’t sleep as discomfort crawls through me.
I roll out of bed, hoping that watching TV could make me fall asleep.
But,...
As I descend the glass stairs, Lancelot is already occupying the sofa, his blank gaze glued to the TV screen, even though it’s obvious that his mind is elsewhere. In his hand is a glass and on the table is a bottle of bourbon.
I turn around to ascend again, but stop when Lancelot’s soothing voice echoes.
“Stay. Join me.”
He makes an effort to walk towards me and assist me down the stairs.
Is he a true gentleman? Or is he only pretending so I can fulfill his desires for revenge and Maegan’s possible resurrection?
Suddenly,...
Lancelot’s sultry gaze drifts to my face, down to my body, making my cheeks and neck burn.
I yank up the low neckline of the nightgown with one hand, and yank down its short hem with the other.
Lancelot closes the gap between us, his hot breath mingling with my shaky one.
“I’m sorry if I’m making you uncomfortable. But,... allow me to do this.”
He cups the back of my head and pulls it to him, then slams his lips onto mine.
A tingling sensation - addicting yet scary, wriggles through me.
The moment we tumble down the sofa, him on top of me, our kiss deepens. It becomes more needy and dominating, making me lose my breath.
My brain tells me to stop, but my body refuses to listen!
Then,...
“Lancelot.”
I gasp when a familiar voice echoes - It’s Lancelot’s father!
“I just head to the powder room for a moment, and you can’t tame yourself from your s.exual desires?” he says nonchalantly.
.My heart sinks in disappointment, realizing that Lancelot only kisses me for a show and nothing more.
But,...
How dare I assume that there’s something more for us, when he made it very clear that our romance is just a lie?
